What is Career Development?
• Career development is the planning of a person’s future
career within an organization in order to maximize his or
her contribution to the organization and the fulfilment of
his or her own potential.
• It is the process by which employees progress through a
series of stages, each characterized by a different set of
developmental tasks, activities, and relationships.
• Career development is important for companies to create
and sustain a continuous learning environment.

Identifying Career Opportunities and
Requirements
• Competency Analysis
– Measures three basic competencies for each job: know-
how, problem solving, and accountability.
• Job Progressions
– The hierarchy of jobs a new employee might experience,
ranging from a starting job to jobs that require more
knowledge and/or skill.
• Career Paths
– Lines of advancement in an occupational field within an
organization.

Career Development Initiatives
• Organizational Socialization: Organizational socialization
is the process by which individuals become part of an
organization's pattern of activities. It is a practice that helps
managers provide their employees with information to
successfully acclimatize with their new organization and
facilitates work adjustment. The goals of socialization for
employees include creating an awareness of the scope of the
firm’s business and decreasing new employees’ concerns
associated with their new roles.
• Career Information services: This provides employees
with career development information to aid employees in their
career advancement. This specifically should include
information regarding how employees’ customer interaction
skills are valued in other parts of the organization.

• Career Planning Workbooks
Stimulate thinking about careers, strengths/ limitations,
development needs
• Career Planning Workshops
These workshops facilitate participants’ education regarding
making career decisions, setting career goals, and seeking
information to plan their career paths. It discusses and
compare attitudes, concerns, plans of employees.
• Career Counseling : Career counseling provides employees, via one-on-
one conversations with their managers or supervisors, the opportunity to discuss career
aspirations and concerns. Discussions on current job activities and performance, personal
and career interests and goals, skills, and
career development objectives.

Actions to increase or motivate Career Development
• Mentoring occurs in organizations when a more experienced
person, such as the employee’s manager, takes responsibility for the
development and guidance of a less experienced employee. These
professional relationships usually involve advising, role modeling,
networking, and the provision of social support which have proven
mutually beneficial for both parties.
• Job enrichment for employees can entail the altering of work
tasks to include higher levels of responsibility and autonomy in
satisfying customers, which should lead to increased feelings of
empowerment for these employees.
• Coaching is focused on managers working to improve employees’
performance in their current role. It is a day-to-day, hands-on
process of managers providing employees with personal guidance,
meaningful feedback, and support to improve their overall
knowledge and up-grade their career potential.

Development
Training programs: not only help managers prepare
employees for their current roles, but also supply
workers with the skills they need for the next position
in their career path.
Job rotation provides a way for service managers to
expose their employees to various jobs within the firm,
such that the workers gain a wider base of skills and a
broader perspective regarding other functions of the
company.
Tuition assistance programs: to support their employees’ education and
development, and it is important that managers actively promote these
benefits to staff members.

Networking is a critical component of career development,
providing opportunities for information exchange, guidance,
and support. Traditional net working relies heavily on
personal interactions to foster relationships, and without
these, it can be difficult to replicate the depth of
connection needed for effective networking

Conclusion
• It is important to note that career development can-not
be handled in a single day or with a one-shot
workshop; rather, it represents a formalized effort to
recognize service employees as vital organizational
resources and to develop them in to enriched and
more capable workers.
