Unit 1: Functions

Description:
Students will explore the fundamental concepts of equations of straight lines, functions, the graph of a
function, and key features of graphs. They will learn how to write equations of straight lines in
slope-intercept form and point-slope form, understand the key properties of functions such as domain
and range, evaluate functions, and identify composite functions and inverse functions. Students will
also learn to graph linear functions using slope and y-intercept, interpret graphs to identify key features
such as intercepts and rate of change, and understand the relationship between equations, functions,
and their corresponding graphs. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and real-world connections,
students will develop a solid foundation in these essential mathematical concepts.

You will cover the following objectives:

1. Equations of Straight Lines:
Students will learn about the slope-intercept form and point-slope form of the equation of a
straight line. They will also learn how to determine the slope and y-intercept from an equation,
and how to find the equation of a line given slope and a point, or two points.

2. Concepts of Functions:

Students will learn about the definition and notation of functions. They will also learn about
the domain and range of a function, evaluating functions and function notation, and
composite functions and inverse functions.

3. The Graph of a Function:

Students will learn about the coordinate plane and plotting points. They will also learn how to
graph linear functions using slope and y-intercept, and how to identify and interpret key
features of graphs (e.g., intercepts, slope, rate of change).

4. Composite functions:

A composite function is a function where the output from one function is used as the input
for another function. For example, the function f(g(x)) is a composite function where g(x) is
the inner function and f(x) is the outer function. Students will learn how to combine two
functions to create a new function. They will also learn how to evaluate composite functions
and how to find the domain and range of composite functions.

5. Inverse functions

An inverse function is a function that reverses the operation of another function. For example,
the inverse of the function f(x) = x^2 is the function g(x) = √x. Students will learn how to find
the inverse of a function. They will also learn how to evaluate inverse functions and how to use
inverse functions to solve equations.

You will cover the following skills:

● Solving linear equations and inequalities
● Determining the slope and y-intercept of a line
● Graphing linear functions and interpreting their graphs
● Evaluating and manipulating functions using function notation
● Analyzing and identifying key features of graphs
● Composing and decomposing functions
● Finding and verifying inverse functions
