Overview
In this assignment, you will explore the AWS cloud environment to gain familiarity with key
services that will be used throughout this course. You will identify, locate, and document AWS
services related to data ingestion, storage, and processing, developing a foundation for future
hands-on assignments.
Scenario
You have recently joined a data engineering team that is migrating from on-premises
infrastructure to AWS cloud services. As a new team member, you need to quickly familiarize
yourself with the AWS environment and identify the key services that will form the foundation
of your data platform. Your manager has asked you to create a reference guide that documents
these services, their capabilities, and how they fit into a modern data architecture.
Instructions
AWS Console Access and Navigation:
o Log into the AWS Management Console using
credentials provided in the course
o Navigate through the AWS console interface to
locate key services
o Document the process of accessing and navigating
the console, including screenshots
o Create a simple directory or "map" of the most
important AWS services for data operations
Service Identification and Documentation:
o Identify and document the following AWS services
that will be used in future assignments:
Storage services: S3, EBS, EFS
Database services: RDS, DynamoDB
Data processing services: EMR, Glue
Analytics services: Athena, Redshift
Stream processing: Kinesis
Orchestration: Step Functions, Lambda
o For each service, document:
Primary purpose and use cases
Key features and capabilities
How to access the service in the AWS console
Basic configuration options
Data Governance in AWS:
o Research and document AWS services and features
related to data governance:
Identity and Access Management (IAM) for data
access control
AWS CloudTrail for auditing and monitoring
Amazon Macie for sensitive data discovery
AWS Glue Data Catalog for metadata
management
o Explain how these services support key governance
functions:
Access control and security
Data classification and cataloging
Compliance monitoring
Audit trail maintenance
Data Pipeline Architecture Design:
o Create a conceptual diagram of a data pipeline using
AWS services that illustrates:
Data ingestion from multiple sources
Data storage layers (raw, processed, analytical)
Data processing and transformation
Data consumption for analytics
o The diagram can be created using any diagramming
tool (e.g., [Link], Lucidchart, PowerPoint)
o Include a brief description of each component and
how they work together
Future Lab Preparation:
o Create a reference guide for the specific AWS
services that will be used in upcoming labs:
AWS S3 for data lake storage
AWS Glue for data cataloging and ETL
AWS Athena for querying data
AWS EMR for big data processing
o Document basic operations that will be needed for
future labs:
Creating S3 buckets and managing objects
Setting up IAM roles and permissions
Launching AWS Glue crawlers
Running Athena queries
Submission Requirements
Submit a comprehensive document (PDF format) containing:
Clear, organized documentation of AWS services and
navigation
Screenshots showing the AWS console and key services
Data pipeline architecture diagram
Reference guide for future lab preparation
Reflections on how AWS services support data
governance and contract principles
Evaluation Criteria
