LESSON 3.4 - SIMPLIDYING RADICALS
A radical expression is in simplest form when....
1. No radicands (expressions under radical signs) have perfect square factors other than 1.
h
2. The index of the radical is in lowest index possible.
l
3. No radicals appear in the denominator of a fraction
1. Simplifying Radicals by Reducing the Radicand
-find a factor of the radicand whose indicated roots can be found.
Examples:
Note: If there is a number
outside the radical sign in the
original problem, multiply it to
the final simplified radical
2. Simplifying Radicals by Reducing the Order of Radicals
-reduce the index to the lowest possible index.

3. Simplifying Radicals by Rationalizing the Denominator
-multiply the numerator and the denominator by an expression of lowest power that will make the
denominator a perfect
Examples:
Notes:
-If there is a fraction outside the
radical sign in the original problem,
multiply it to the numerator and
denominator of the final simplified
radical
-If it’s a mixed fraction: No need to
multiply, keep the number as it is
-If there is a whole number multiplied
to a number in a radical: It will stay
outside as you can’t multiply a whole
number to a radical
