Objectives and Principles of the United Nations
The United Nations (UN), established on 24 October 1945, is the only truly universal
intergovernmental organization created to date. It began with 51 nations(now 193 member
states). The UN remains the leading global body addressing a wide range of governance issues. It
serves as the primary forum for tackling challenges that no single nation can resolve alone. The
UN Charter enumerates the avowed purposes & the principles of the charter in Article 1 and 2
Article 1
The Purposes of the United Nations are :
1. To maintain international peace and security by taking effective collective measures to
prevent and remove threats to peace. This includes suppressing acts of aggression and resolving
international disputes in accordance with the principles of justice and international law;
2. To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights
and self-determination of peoples, and to take other appropriate measures to strengthen
universal peace;
3. To achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social,
cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights
and for fundamental freedoms for all regardless of race, sex, language, or religion; and
4.To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends.
Article 2
The organization and its members, in pursuit of the purposes stated ni Article 1, shall act in
accordance with the following Principles :
1. Sovereign Equality – All member states are considered equal under international law.
2. Good Faith Obligations – All members, in order to ensure to all of them the rights and
benefits resulting from membership,must uphold and fulfill their obligations under the present
UN Charter in good faith.
3. Peaceful Dispute Resolution – All members shall resolve international disputes through
peaceful means to avoid endangering peace, security, and justice.
4. Prohibition of Force – Nations must refrain from using threat or force against the territorial
integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the
Purposes of the United Nations.
5. Cooperation with the UN – All members must assist the UN in any action it takes under the
Charter and refrain from supporting states against which the UN is taking preventive or
enforcement action.
6. Non-Member Compliance – The UN encourages non-member states to follow its principles
to maintain international peace and security.
7. Non-Interference – The UN does not intervene in matters that fall within the domestic
jurisdiction of any state, except when enforcement measures under Chapter VI of the Charter
apply.

The U.N. plays a crucial role in uniting nations to maintain peace and security worldwide. By
upholding its principles, member states contribute to a stable and just international order.
Through collective efforts, the organization continues to address global challenges and promote
harmony among nations.
