17. A group of people decided to raise sh 72,000 to buy a generator. They agreed to contribute equal
amount of money. Before the contribution, five members decided to withdraw from the plan and as a
result those who remained had to pay more to meet their target of sh 72,000.
(a) If x represents the number of people originally in the organization. Express in terms of x.
(i) The amount each was to contribute originally. (1mark)

(ii) The amount each contributed after the five left. (1mark)

(b) The members who remained in the organization contributed sh. 1200 more than they would have
contributed originally. Find the number of people originally in the organization.

(c) Calculate the increase per person as a percentage. (2marks)

18. The table below shows income tax rates for a certain month this year.

A monthly tax relief of ksh 2400 was allowed. Jane’s taxable income in the last band was ksh 34,750
in the month. Jane’s salary included rental house allowance of ksh 13,000 and commuter allowance
ksh 6000.She contributed 7.5% of her basic salary to a pension scheme and 2.5% of her basic salary
to a housing fund levy which are exempted from taxation.
(a) Calculate
(i) Her taxable income per month. (2marks)

(ii) The amount of tax she paid in a month. (5marks)

(b) Jane was also deducted sh.1400 for NHIF, sh.5000 for saving and sh 20,000 for development loan
that month. Calculate her net pay. (3marks)

(b) A stair was built such that each subsequent stair has a uniform difference in height. The height of the
6th stair from the horizontal floor was 85cm and the height of the 10th stair was 145cm.
(i) Calculate the height of the first stair and the uniform difference in the height of the stairs.

(iii) During the construction of the staircase, each step was supported by a vertical piece of timber. If the
staircase has 11 stairs. Calculate the total length of the timber used. (2marks)
