In the case of export orders, the team works closely with logistics agents and customs
consultants to ensure compliance with international shipping laws, proper HS coding, export
invoicing, and documentation like Bill of Lading, Packing List, and Certificate of Origin.
The department also handles custom branding requirements, where clients request their own
labels, logos, and colour specifications on matchboxes. These demands are passed on to the
design and printing units for execution.
Sri Ram Match Industries’ Sales Department is structured with different roles such as Sales
Executives, Marketing Managers, Export Coordinators, and Client Service Officers, each
performing specific functions to streamline the process.
5
The sales team constantly monitors market trends, competitor pricing, and buyer behavior
to adjust strategies accordingly. It also gathers customer feedback to suggest improvements in
product quality, packaging, and service delivery.
They are responsible for creating monthly sales reports, performance charts, and revenue
analytics that help management make informed decisions. These reports track new orders,
client retention, sales growth, and customer satisfaction.
The Sales Department regularly interacts with the Accounts Department to ensure timely
invoicing, tax compliance (GST for domestic, IGST for export), and payment follow-ups. For
key clients like ITC and Homelites, customized billing and credit periods are negotiated.
Marketing is also a sub-function of the department. The team uses product catalogues,

o Straightness and uniformity
o Absence of rot or insect damage
Logs are stored under shaded areas to preserve their moisture content before processing.
Operators monitor:
o Blade sharpness
o Speed and pressure settings
o Thickness consistency
4. Splint Cutting
The long veneer sheets are then fed into splint cutting machines, which slice them into
fine rectangular sticks of standard matchstick size. These splints are collected,
bundled, and sent to the drying section.
5. Moisture Control
Moisture plays a critical role in peeling. Over-dry logs crack during peeling, while over-
wet wood leads to soggy splints. Therefore, logs are moistened or sun-dried as
needed to achieve the right processing condition.
6. Waste Management
The peeling process generates waste such as bark, wood dust, and irregular splints. These
are collected and often reused for:
o Fuel for the boiler
20
o Composting
o Selling as scrap to local vendors
The department ensures minimal wastage through proper log selection and machine maintenance.
Machinery Used
The Peeling Department is one of the most essential units in the production process at Sri
Ram Match Industries. It transforms raw timber into usable match splints through precision
cutting and systematic handling. With skilled labor, machine efficiency, and strict quality
checks, the department ensures a steady and consistent supply of high-quality splints to the rest
of the production line, contributing significantly to the company’s product quality and
operational efficiency.
The Cutting Department at Sri Ram Match Industries is a key intermediate stage between the
Peeling Department and the Drying and Chemical Dipping Sections. Once the raw wood is
peeled into thin veneer sheets, the Cutting Department is responsible for converting those
sheets into matchstick-sized splints using high-speed precision cutting machines.
This department focuses on maintaining uniformity, accuracy, speed, and minimal wastage, as
the size and quality of splints directly affect the quality of the final matchstick.
21
1
Cutting into Splints
Using specially designed splint cutting machines, the veneer sheets are fed manually or
automatically into the machine, where sharp blades slice the sheets into splints of specific
dimensions (typically ~2mm × 2mm × 4cm).
Sorting of Splints
After cutting, splints are sorted manually or via vibratory sieves:
Waste Management
Wood scraps and unusable splints are collected and either:
Machinery Used
Splint Cutting Machines – Motorized rotary blade machines for precision slicing
22
Vibratory Sorting Tables – For size separation
Dust Extractors – To remove sawdust and keep machines clean
Conveyor Belts – To transfer splints to the drying section
All machines are maintained under strict supervision to reduce downtime and ensure safety.
The Cutting Department at Sri Ram Match Industries plays an essential role in determining the
uniformity and physical integrity of matchsticks. By converting raw wood sheets into
precisely sized splints, the department lays the foundation for a high-quality product. With
skilled operators, modern machinery, regular quality checks, and proper coordination with
upstream and downstream units, the Cutting Department contributes significantly to the
company’s efficiency and product reliability.
The Drying Department at Sri Ram Match Industries is a crucial intermediate stage in the
matchstick manufacturing process. After the splints are cut from peeled veneer sheets in the
Cutting Department, they contain a significant amount of moisture, which must be removed
before proceeding to the chemical dipping stage. This is essential to maintain product
integrity, ensure proper chemical absorption, and prevent fungal growth or premature
combustion.
The department operates under strict time, temperature, and quality controls, ensuring uniform
drying of splints while minimizing material loss and energy consumption.
To reduce the moisture content of splints to an optimal level (usually below 10%).
To ensure splints are straight, unwrapped, and crack-free after drying.
To prepare splints for uniform chemical absorption in the next process.
To prevent microbial contamination (e.g., Mold) during storage.
23
o Large open concrete platforms are used for spreading splints under direct
sunlight
o Workers turn the splints manually for even drying
o Duration varies between 4 to 6 hours, depending on weather and humidity
o Cost-effective but weather-dependent; used during non-monsoon months
2. Kiln Drying (Modern Method)
o Used during monsoon or when rapid, consistent drying is required
o Splints are placed in chambered drying units with controlled heat and
airflow
o Temperature typically ranges from 60°C to 90°C, with continuous ventilation
o Drying time is faster (2–3 hours), and quality is more uniform
o Energy-efficient kilns help reduce wastage and improve turnaround
1. Receiving of Splints
Bundles of freshly cut splints arrive from the Cutting Department. Splints are first
inspected for defects, breakage, and excess moisture.
2. Spreading or Stacking
o For sun drying, workers spread the splints evenly in single layers
o For kiln drying, splints are loaded onto trays with spacing for airflow
3. Drying Execution
o Splints are monitored continuously during drying
o For sun drying, workers rotate splints manually every hour
o Kiln dryers are programmed with timers and safety thermostats
4. Inspection & Moisture Testing
Dried splints are checked using moisture meters to ensure optimal dryness. Samples are
tested before moving to the next stage.
5. Bundling & Transfer
Properly dried splints are bundled and sent to the Chemical Dipping Department.
Defective or under-dried splints are either re-dried or discarded.
The Drying Department at Sri Ram Match Industries ensures that wooden splints are dried to the
right level of moisture, maintaining both product quality and process efficiency. With a
24
combination of traditional sun drying and modern kiln technology, the department balances
cost-effectiveness with consistency. Its operations are critical to preventing defects, enhancing
chemical absorption, and supporting a smooth flow in the manufacturing cycle. Through
careful coordination, regular testing, and skilled labour, the department contributes
significantly to the overall quality of the finished matchsticks.
The Chemical Dipping Department at Sri Ram Match Industries plays a critical role in
transforming ordinary wooden splints into usable matchsticks by coating one end with a
chemical mixture that ignites upon friction. This department is one of the most technically
sensitive units in the production process, requiring careful handling of inflammable
chemicals, controlled working conditions, and trained labour to ensure safety and product
consistency.
This department operates under strict safety regulations, and the dipping process is managed
through a mix of manual and semi-automated setups, depending on the volume and type of
matchsticks being produced.
To apply the ignition head composition to the tip of each wooden splint
To ensure uniformity, dryness, and safety of chemically treated match splints
To prepare chemically dipped splints for packing or boxing
To maintain fire safety and chemical storage compliance
The Chemical Dipping Department at Sri Ram Match Industries is the core stage of match
production, where matchsticks are given their ignition capability. With a deep focus on
chemical accuracy, safety, and quality control, the department ensures that every matchstick
is safe to use, reliable, and compliant with industry standards. The integration of manual skill
and chemical knowledge makes this department both technically sensitive and highly
significant in the company’s operational chain.
The Packaging Department at Sri Ram Match Industries is the final stage of the production
process where chemically dipped and dried matchsticks are counted, sorted, packed into
boxes, and labelled for dispatch. This department is divided into two main operational
sections: Manual (Hand) Packing and Machine Packing, each playing a vital role depending
on the product type, order size, and brand requirements.
As a company supplying to major clients like ITC, Homelites , AIM, Ship, and Tinga, packaging
is done with great care to meet branding, weight, count, and safety specifications. The
department operates under the supervision of the Production Manager, with strict adherence to
quality control and labour safety standards.
The manual packing section is traditionally used for small-batch packing, specialty
products, or boxes that require delicate handling. It is labour-intensive but offers
flexibility and precision for customized or premium brands.
Process Flow:
1. Splint Loading
Workers receive dipped and dried splints in crates. They are visually inspected again for
defects.
26
2. Manual Counting
A standard matchbox typically contains 40 to 50 matchsticks. Workers count and
arrange sticks neatly by hand.
3. Box Filling
o Workers insert the counted sticks into pre-printed inner boxes
o The filled inner boxes are then slid into the outer sleeves
4. Labelling and Batching
Each batch is marked with:
o Batch number
o Date of packing
o Brand name (e.g., Homelites, AIM)
5. Bundling and Wrapping
o Boxes are packed into dozens or larger units (e.g., 10s, 100s)
o Wrapped manually in polythene or shrink film
o Tied or stacked into shipping cartons
Challenges:
The machine packing line is used for mass production and high-volume orders, especially
for brands with tight deadlines or uniform box requirements. It is faster, more consistent,
and ideal for domestic and export bulk supply.
27
Machinery Used:
Process Flow:
1. Splint Feeding

Challenges:
The Chemical Department of Sri Ram Match Industries is a core technical division responsible
for the formulation, storage, and controlled supply of chemicals required for the production
of matchsticks. This department works closely with the Chemical Dipping Unit, ensuring a
steady and safe availability of ignition mixtures and related compounds used in match head
coating.
Given the flammable and reactive nature of many of these chemicals, the department is governed
by strict safety regulations, experienced supervision, and adherence to both industry norms
and governmental guidelines related to chemical handling.
Chemical Storage
The Chemical Department of Sri Ram Match Industries plays a vital behind-the-scenes role in
fuelling the entire production process with properly formulated and tested chemical solutions.
Through a combination of technical precision, safety-conscious practices, and seamless
coordination with other departments, it ensures that the matchsticks are safe, reliable, and
consistent in ignition performance. Without the precision of this department, the product’s core
function—igniting on friction—would not be possible.
The Quality Control (QC) Department of Sri Ram Match Industries is responsible for
ensuring that all raw materials, production processes, and finished goods meet strict
30
quality, safety, and regulatory standards. As matchsticks are consumer fire products, even minor
deviations in size, moisture, or chemical coating can lead to safety risks or brand rejection.
Hence, quality control is embedded at every stage of production, from raw wood inspection to
the final boxed product.
