Mahatma Gandhi: Biography
and Contributions
Biography
Born in 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a lawyer and
leader who used non-violence to fight for justice. He worked
against discrimination in South Africa before returning to India
in 1915. His simple life, strong values, and dedication to truth
earned him the title "Mahatma" (Great Soul).

Contributions
Gandhi spearheaded major non-violent movements like the
Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22), the Salt March (1930),
and the Quit India Movement (1942). He popularized Satyagraha
(truth-force) and Ahinsa (non-violence) as powerful tools for
political change. His leadership unified diverse sections of
Indian society, making the freedom struggle a mass movement
and globally influencing civil rights movements.
Subhas Chandra Bose:
Biography and Contributions
Biography
Born in 1897, Subhas Chandra Bose was a prominent nationalist
who challenged Gandhi's non-violent approach. Educated in
Calcutta and Cambridge, he joined the Indian National Congress
but grew disillusioned with its methods. His famous slogan,
"Give me blood, and I shall give you freedom!" encapsulated his
revolutionary spirit and appeal to the youth.

Contributions
Bose famously escaped British surveillance in 1941 to seek
foreign aid for India's independence. He organized the Azad
Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) in Southeast Asia, recruiting
Indian prisoners of war and civilians, fighting alongside the
Axis powers. His daring strategies and appeals to international
powers, despite controversial alliances, significantly intensified
pressure on the British, showcasing an alternative path to
freedom.
Bhagat Singh: Biography and
Contributions
Biography
Born in 1907, Bhagat Singh was a charismatic revolutionary
socialist who became a symbol of defiance against British rule.
Deeply influenced by socialist ideologies and revolutionary
literature, he believed that armed struggle was necessary to
overthrow the colonial regime. His radical methods and
fearless spirit quickly made him a folk hero among Indian
youth.

Contributions
Bhagat Singh co-founded the Hindustan Socialist Republican
Association (HSRA) and was involved in various revolutionary
acts, including the bombing of the Central Legislative Assembly
in 1929 to protest oppressive laws. He was arrested, tried, and
executed in 1931, alongside Sukhdev and Rajguru, becoming a
martyr for the cause. His sacrifice ignited nationwide protests
and inspired countless young Indians to join the freedom
movement.
Rani Lakshmibai: Biography
and Contributions
Biography
Born in Manikarnika Tambe in 1828, she was the Queen of the
princely state of Jhansi. Renowned for her courage and
leadership, she became an iconic figure of the Indian Rebellion
of 1857. Trained in martial arts, she was an exceptional warrior
who refused to surrender her kingdom to the British.

Contributions
Rani Lakshmibai valiantly fought against the British East India
Company during the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. She famously led her
troops in the defense of Jhansi, fighting on horseback with her
infant son tied to her back. Her defiant spirit and bravery
against overwhelming odds made her a legendary symbol of
Indian resistance and a beacon of female empowerment in the
freedom struggle.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel:
Biography and Contributions
Biography
Born in 1875, Vallabhbhai Patel was a prominent lawyer and
political leader, known as the "Iron Man of India." A staunch
disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, he played a crucial role in
organizing peasant movements and was instrumental in
uniting the fragmented princely states into the Indian Union
after independence. His pragmatic approach and strong will
earned him the title "Sardar" (Chief).

Contributions
Patel was a key figure in the Indian National Congress and
played a pivotal role in the Kheda Satyagraha (1918) and the
Bardoli Satyagraha (1928), organizing farmers against
oppressive taxes. Post-independence, as the first Deputy Prime
Minister and Home Minister, his most significant achievement
was the integration of over 560 princely states into the
Indian Union, a monumental task achieved through a
combination of diplomacy and decisive action, securing
India's territorial integrity.
