Highway Final Exam

The document is a final exam for Highway Engineering I at Wolaita Sodo University, covering various topics in road design and engineering principles. It includes both theoretical questions about road design factors such as camber, superelevation, and drainage structures, as well as practical problems involving curve design and volume estimation for road construction. Students are required to attempt all questions within a closed book format over a duration of three hours.

WOLAITA SODO UNIVERSITY

DEPARTMENT of CIVIL ENGINEERING

Highway Engineering I
Time Allowed: 3 Hrs.
Final Exam
Date: June 26, 2013
2012/2013 A.Y.
Note: - Examination is Closed Book.
Attempt all questions.

Part I: Answer the following questions

1. What is the objective of providing camber/crown-slope/ in road design? Discuss the

factors on which the amount of camber to be provided depends. For which type of
pavement, asphalt or gravel, do you recommend a greater value of camber?
2. Why are roads superelevated around horizontal curves? What factors control the
maximum and minimum values of superelevation to be applied?
3. What are the various guidelines that have to be followed for alignment and route
selection? Discuss each factor briefly.
4. What is a mass haul diagram? Using an assumed natural profile and corresponding
grade of a road of your own choice plot and discuss on the concepts of the mass haul
diagram.
5. A drainage structure is designed by 25years and 100 years return periods, which
design would be costly and why?

Part II: Solve the following problems.

6. In the design of an 8m two-way, one-lane road, two tangents intersect at station

1+450 with a deflection angle of 90°.These tangents are to be connected by a
Simple circular curve of 300m radius, designed for a speed of 80 km/hr.

a) Determine the tangent length, the chord length, the middle ordinate, the
external distance and length of the curve?
b) Determine stations of beginning and end of the curve.

7. A 4.5% descending grade intersects a 3% ascending grade in a certain section of a
highway. A symmetrical parabolic curve joins these two grades starting from station
12+635m.

a) Determine the length of the curve if the cross drainage structure located at station
12+741m corresponds to the lowest point on the curve.
b) If the design speed=70 km/hr, Perception reaction time=2.5sec and f=0.14, does the
curve length determined in (a) satisfy requirements of minimum stopping sight
distance and comfort? If not, what should be the curve length satisfying these
requirements.

8. A short link road is to be constructed entirely on embankment at uniformly rising

gradient of 2%.The original ground is level in the transverse direction with the
centerline elevations given in the following table. If the finished road surface elevation at
station 0+000 is 1222.0m; estimate the volume of fill if the formation width is 8m
including shoulders.
Assume a side slope of 1 vertical to 2 horizontal and zero crown slope.
