THEO5343/THEO3241 Homiletics 講道學
Assignments’ Arrangments:
(All assignments should be uploaded to Blackboard. The full-script sermon and the essay should also be
uploaded to VeriGuide.)
1. Short Speaking exercises (10%):
Every student has to give TWO 5-min sermons in front of the class.
At least one must be preached on a biblical text.
We will have a random draw on Class 3 (20 Sept) to determine the dates of speaking.
2. Short Assignment (10%)
Write a “Focus Statement” and a “Function Statement” with an explanatory note of 500–800 words.
For the definition of the two statements, you can refer to the required reading by Thomas G. Long,
“The Focus and Function of the Sermon,” in The Witness of Preaching, chapter 4. We should cover
them in Class 5 (11 Oct).
The statements are to help you compose your full-script sermon assignment; thus, the statements
should be constructed with a view to the expected sermon based on a selected biblical text.
Presumably, you should also select your biblical text for your sermon by 11 Oct.
You should submit this short assignment by 21 Oct 2022.
3. Full-Script Sermon (20%)
Please submit the full-script sermon by 18 Nov 2022.
The expected length of the sermon should be between 20 to 40 mins(a script approx. 2000 to 4000
words)
The intended context of the sermon should be in general/usual Sunday worship, not any special
occasion (such as funeral) or particular congregation setting (such as preaching to pre-school
children).
4. Preaching (video-recorded) (20%)
Please submit the video file (or its link) by 12 Dec 2022.
You should arrange for the sermon’s delivery in a congregational setting within term time. If you find
it difficult to do so, please inform the instructors as soon as possible, and we will help arrange an
appropriate gathering for you to preach.
You are advised to preach with your full-script sermon at hand. If your preaching occurs before you
submit your full-script sermon, you can preach with a draft of your script.
5. Essay (40%)
Please submit your term-end essay by 16 Dec 2022.
If you choose to write a research paper, you must submit a paper proposal by 25 Oct. The proposal
should include the research context, your paper’s research question and tentative thesis, a
preliminary outline, and relevant resources/bibliography you would consult.
If you choose to write an analysis of sermons, you must submit a proposal by 25 Oct. The proposal
should include the sermons you want to analyze, the appropriate scholarly perspectives you would
employ, the rationale of this analysis, and the relevant resources/bibliography you would consult.
