Investigative Lab Script

The laboratory experiment aimed to determine the densities of sea water, tap water, and distilled water using a method involving mass measurements and calculations. The results showed varying densities, with average values of 0.99195 g/cm³ for sea water, 0.91984 g/cm³ for distilled water, and 1.19687 g/cm³ for tap water. The document includes sections for discussion, limitations, sources of error, precautions, reflection, and conclusion, which are yet to be filled out.

Title: Density of water

Aim: To determine if sea water, tap water and distilled water have the same density

Apparatus and Materials: 3 measuring cylinders, 6 beakers, sea water, tap water, distilled

water, scale

Diagram:

Title: Diagram showing drawing of apparatus during experiment

Method:

1. On a scale, place a beaker and record its mass.

2. Measure and pour 100ml of seawater using a measuring into a beaker and record its new
mass.
3. Subtract the mass of the beaker from the new mass.
4. Measure and repeat the same process with tap water and distilled water.
5. Using a calculator and the formula, Density = Mass/Volume, calculate the density of the salt
water, tap water and distilled water and record it.

1. A measuring cylinder was placed on a scale and its mass was recorded.

2. A measuring cylinder was used to measure 100 ml of seawater which was then poured into a
beaker and its new mass was recorded.

3. The mass of the beaker was subtracted from the new mass.

4. The same process was measured and repeated using tap water and distilled.

5. A calculator was used to calculate the density of the salt water, tap water and distilled water
using the formula Density= Mass/Volume which was then recorded.
