6. CASTING QUALITY.

6.1 Sample Casting

6.1.1 Visual Examination: Casting surface shall be clean, dry and free from dirt, oil, grease and
loose scale. Interior areas shall be clean to allow visual inspection.

Surface of casting shall be free from adhering sand, scale, cracks and other defects as defined in
MSS-SP-55.

Weld joints and areas to be welded shall be free from burned-in sand, scale and slag.

All machined surfaces shall be free from visual surface imperfections which would affect the
serviceability of the part.

Areas to be selectively hardened must be uniform in microstructure, consistent with the applicable
prior processing performed at the casting source.

Selectively hardened areas must be free from imperfections which would affect the selective
hardening of the part.
No weld repairs are allowed in areas designated on the drawing to be selectively hardened.

6.1.2 Magnetic Particle Inspection

The entire casting shall be subjected to magnetic particle inspection for sample approval.
Unless designated "defect free" on the engineering drawing, maximum allowable defect severity
shall be ASTM E125 Type 1 degree 2B for typical 5/8" defects.

6.1.3 Radiographic Inspection

Radiographic inspection standards of acceptability for the initial sample and production parts shall
be evaluated against ASTM Specification E446, reference radiographs for steel castings up to and

including 2 inches (50 mm.) in thickness. Castings with a section thickness greater than 2" will be
evaluated to the appropriate reference radiographs, i.e. ASTM E186.

Radiographic technique, source type, shooting sketch and film should be submitted for Volvo C.E.
approval along with the sample.

Unless otherwise designated on the engineering drawing, the internal soundness of all sample
castings must meet the following reference radiographic standards:

REFERENCE RADIOGRAPHS ASTM E 446 & ASTM E 186

Discontinuity Type Type Designation Acceptable Acceptable Severity

E 446 E 186 Severity Levels Levels All Other Areas
Weld Joint Areas

Porosity A A 2 4
Inclusion B B 3 4
Shrinkage CA 1 4 5
Shrinkage CB 2 3 4
Shrinkage CC 3 3 4
Shrinkage CD - 3 4
Cracks D D None Up to 15mm (*)
Hot Tears E E None None
Unfused Chaplets F F None One in a 5” x
7” (125mm x 175 mm)
Unfused Internal G - None area
Chills None

(*) = Would be allowed as review case by case – but prior to shipping to Volvo C.E.

NOTE: When two or more discontinuity types are present in the 5" x 7" radiograph to
an extent equal to the maximum acceptable level for two of these types, the casting
shall be judged unacceptable.

Use of chaplets and their location will be mutually agreed upon with the vendor.

High stress areas designated on the engineering drawing should meet the acceptable
severity level criteria outlined for weld joint areas.

6.1.4 Weld Repairs

The objective of this specification is to produce castings which meet the quality requirements with
no rework. To qualify for full sample approval, weld repairs should not be carried out without
Volvo C.E. agreement.

With the approval of Volvo C.E., sample castings which are not fully approved can be "upgraded"
by carrying out weld repairs in accordance with the instructions for Production Castings, ref. Para.
6.2.5.

6.2 Production Castings

6.2.1 Visual Examination

Casting surface shall be clean, dry and free from dirt, oil, grease and loose scale. Interior areas
shall be clean to allow visual inspection.

6.2.2 Magnetic Particle Examination

Acceptance standards for production castings are the same as those specified in Para. 6.1.2 for
Sample Castings.

Where Magnetic Particle Inspection is to be used as a measure of acceptance for production

castings, this requirement and acceptance standards must be specified on the drawing.

Defects highlighted on surveillance checks will be the subject of corrective action by the vendor
to eliminate the defect, and the details submitted to Volvo C.E.

6.2.3 Radiographic Inspection

Acceptance standards for production castings are the same as those specified in Para. 6.1.3 for
Sample Castings.

6.2.4 Ultrasonics

When mutually agreed between Volvo C.E. and the supplier ultrasonic inspection can be
substituted for radiographs for the periodic inspection of production castings.

6.2.5 Weld Repairs

Production castings which develop defects which do not meet the quality standards established for
the component or sample castings which do not qualify for full approval as
referred to in Para. 6.1.4 can be weld repaired using the following guidelines.

(a) Repairs shall be made by a qualified welder to a repair procedure approved by Volvo
C.E., and to the requirements of ASTM A148 Para. 15.2 (b).

(b) The procedure must yield a hardness in the weld and adjacent heat affected zone which
is substantially comparable to the hardness of the base metal.

(c) No weld repairs are permissible in areas designated on the drawing as requiring
selective hardening.

(d) Weld repairs in highly stressed areas shall be subject to concession approval from
Volvo C.E.

General Information (Not Mandatory Vendor Requirements)

Welding procedures incorporating proper "pre" and / or "post" heating must be developed for each
application. Carbon equivalent for Grade A, I and II is restricted to facilitate welding in production
assemblies. Grade III cannot be restricted and therefore is not to be used in weldments.
When selective hardening (EEPS 8) of the casting is required, Grade II or Grade III only shall be
specified. These castings can be selective hardened to EEPS - 8 II case depth maximum. Contact
the Materials Laboratory for castings requiring deeper selective hardened case than EEPS - 8 II.

Design Criteria Recommended

Properties developed in the casting are generally lower than the standard test samples and are
dependent on section thickness and configuration.
The mechanical properties, shown in para 3, are recommended for design purposes.

Drafting Information

The following designation shall appear on the drawing:

Material EEMS 11008 Cast Steel Grade (Followed by appropriate Grade No.)

NOTE: All weld joint areas, machined surfaces, location of chaplets, areas to be selectively
hardened must be clearly defined on the drawing.

These specifications were developed without considering whether patents may or may not be
involved. In all cases, therefore, the supplier shall be required to assume patent liability.
