Modulation and Demodulation

Modulation is the process of encoding information in a transmitted signal, while demodulation is the extraction of that information at the receiver. The two key signals in this process are the baseband signal, which carries the information, and the carrier signal, which facilitates transmission. Modulation is essential for efficient communication as it enhances signal range, reduces antenna size, and minimizes interference.

Modulation and Demodulation:

Modulation is an activity or process that takes place in transmitter section of a communication system.
Modulation is the process of encoding information in a transmitted signal, while Demodulation is the process of
extracting information from the transmitted signal. Demodulation is an activity or process that takes place in
receiver section of a communication system. Process of removing carrier from modulated wave is known as
demodulation or detection.

The two signals involved in modulation process are: baseband signal and carrier.

1. Modulating signal = baseband signal = intelligence signal = information bearing signal = message signal
= input signal

 Modulating or baseband signal is LF signal.

 Baseband or message signals are generated by information sources like microphone,
camera, type writer etc.
 Real-life examples of baseband signal: voice, audio, music, video, computer data
2. Carrier signal
 Carrier: as the name suggests, its job is to carry the signal from one place to other.
 Carrier is a HF signal.
 Sine or cosine wave are used as carrier in analog modulation techniques such as AM, FM
Real-life examples of carrier signal: Bus, Train, Airplane etc.
Classification of Modulation or Types of Modulation:

Need of Modulation:

 Easy transportation of baseband signals.

 Increase the range of Communication.
 Modulation allows smaller size of antenna.
 Reduce the height of antenna. [𝐡 = 𝝀/𝟒 = 𝒄/𝟒𝒇]
 For successful transmission and reception of baseband signals.
 Allows the multiplexing of signals.
 To reduce interference and noise.
 Avoid the Mixing of signal.
 Allows the bandwidth adjustment.
