Review in RCD : Problem Set

Prepared by : Engr. Neil Graham Bhel P. Garcia

Situation 1 : A rectangular RC beam with a width of 200 mm and an effective depth of 500 mm is subjected
to a service moment load of 120 kN – m. The beam is reinforced with 4-25mm diameter bars with a modular
ratio n = 8.

2. Compute the transformed moment of inertia. (Itr = 1938.07x10^6 mm^4)

[Link] the stress in concrete (fc = 13.16 MPa)

[Link] the stress in steel (142.41 MPa)

Situation 2 : Given the illustration of a customized reinforced concrete beam. M = 180 kN-m As = 4-25mm ∅
bars.

[Link] the stress in concrete (fc = 10.86 MPa)

[Link] the stress in steel (fs = 86.89 MPa)

Situation 3 :A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 300mm and a total depth of 500mm. It has an effective
depth of 437.5 mm. Concrete strength f’c = 27.6 MPa, fy = 414.7 MPa, As = 2500 mm^2

8. Determine the depth of the compression block. (a = 147.31 mm)

9. Determine the depth of centroid from the top f the beam. (173.30mm)

10. Determine the minimum steel required. (Asmin =443.09 mm^2).

11. Determine the Nominal Moment Capacity. (Mn =377.22 kN -m)

12. Determine the Ultimate Moment Capacity. (Mu =325.75 kN -m )

Situation 4 : Given the following data of a rectangular beam:

Width, b = 300 mm
Effective depth, d = 500 mm
Concrete Strength, f’c = 27.5 MPa
Steel Strength, fy = 415 MPa
Service Loads:
Dead Load Moment = 60 kN-m
Live Load Moment = 80 kN-m
If necessary, the effective cover to the centroid of compression steel is 65 mm.
13. How many 25 – mm tension and compression bars are needed? (N = 3 Tension Bars)
Situation 5 : A beam is reinforced on its tension and compression side. If the reinforced concrete beam has a
width of 350 mm and a total depth of 550mm with a reinforcement at the compression side of 3 – 28 mm ∅
bars, and 5 – 28 mm ∅ bars. The stirrups used as reinforcement has a 12 mm ∅ bars. Clear cover = 40mm f’c

end of the beam.

18. What is the nominal moment capacity? (Mn = 489.15 kN-m)
19. What is the ultimate moment capacity ?(Mu = 377.32 kN-m)
