CH - 2 Itf Notes

This document provides notes on inverse trigonometric functions, including definitions, properties, and exercises. It explains the concept of invertible functions, the horizontal and vertical line tests, and the restrictions needed for trigonometric functions to have inverses. Additionally, it outlines the domain and range for various inverse trigonometric functions and lists several properties without proofs.

CHAPTER – 2 INVERSE TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS ( NOTES)

NOTE: ( To enter in the Register)

 Write the definition of invertible function
 Table stating domain and range of ITF
 All the properties (Without Proof )
 Then start with exercises.

INVERTIBLE FUNCTIONS
If f : A  B which is one-one onto (BIJECTIVE) then g (= f-1) : B  A defined by

f-1 (y) = x iff, f(x) = y

Domain of f = range of f-1 and Range of f = domain of f-1 (write in register)

ONE-ONE FUNCTION

To determine ONE-ONE function through HORIZANTAL LINE test

i.e. horizontal line meets any curve at only one point.

ONTO FUNCTION: range = codomain.

VERTICAL LINE TEST for FUNCTION:

Graph of Y = cos x
The above six trigonometric functions are not ONE_ONE because it fails with
HORIZANTAL LINE test.

So inverse does not exists, Moreover all Trigonometric functions are

PERIODIC function( repeats its values after certain interval).

So to make inverse exists (one-one ) we will restrict domain of each

functions.
𝜋 𝜋 3𝜋 − 𝜋 𝜋 3𝜋
Note: besides[ -2 , 2 ] there are other branches where sine function is one-one i.e [ - 2 , 2
], [ 2 ,
2
],
3𝜋 5𝜋 5𝜋 7𝜋 𝜋 𝜋
[ ,
2 2
], [ 2 , 2 ] etc…. but we consider [ -2 , 2 ] as principal value branch (p.v. branch).
Other branches where cos x is one-one are [𝜋, 2𝜋], [2𝜋, 3𝜋], [−𝜋, 0] etc…..
Domain = [-1,1]

Range = [0, 𝜋] = P. V. branch

domain = R
𝜋 𝜋
Range = ( - 2 , 2 )
DOMAIN AND RANGE( P.V. Branch ) OF ITF
