Trunking Systems Installation – Class Notes
1. Introduction
Trunking systems are enclosed channels, usually made from PVC or steel, used to protect and
route electrical cables. They provide a safe, neat, and organized method of running wiring in
residential, commercial, and industrial installations.
2. Learning Outcomes
• Explain the purpose and importance of trunking in electrical installations.
• Identify different types of trunking and accessories.
• Plan and mark routes for trunking installations.
• Measure, cut, and assemble trunking accurately.
• Install trunking safely following electrical standards.
• Carry out cable pulling, dressing, and termination within trunking.
• Test and inspect trunking installations for compliance.
3. Types of Trunking
• PVC Trunking – lightweight, non-corrosive, easy to cut.
• Steel Trunking – strong, durable, used in industrial environments.
• Mini-Trunking – small size, used for ICT/data cables.
• Flexible Trunking – allows cable runs in difficult areas.
Accessories include: Bends, Tees, Couplers, End caps, Reducers, Junctions, Screws and wall
plugs.
4. Tools and Materials Needed
• Hacksaw / Trunking cutter
• Screwdriver set
• Measuring tape / steel rule
• Spirit level / plumb line
• Hammer drill with masonry bits
• File (for smooth edges after cutting)
• Screws, wall plugs, and fixing brackets
• Marker pen and chalk line
5. Installation Procedure
1 Planning & Marking – Study the wiring diagram, decide routes, mark positions with chalk line
and spirit level.
2 Cutting & Preparing – Measure lengths, cut trunking neatly, file rough edges.
3 Mounting the Trunking – Drill holes, insert wall plugs, fix trunking with screws.
4 Fitting Accessories – Connect sections using couplers, install bends, tees, reducers, and end
caps.
5 Cable Laying – Open cover, lay cables neatly, group and tie where necessary.
6 Closing & Finishing – Replace cover, check neatness, label circuits if required.
7 Testing & Inspection – Verify continuity, insulation resistance, earthing, and compliance.
6. Safety Precautions
• Always wear PPE (gloves, safety boots, goggles).
• Switch off power supply before installation.
• Avoid sharp edges—file after cutting.
• Ensure trunking is not overloaded with cables.
• Follow local wiring codes and standards.
7. Practical Activities for Trainees
• Identify different trunking types and accessories.
• Measure and cut a 1-meter trunking section accurately.
• Mount a PVC trunking run (2m with one 90° bend).
• Lay three circuits inside the trunking and close covers.
• Test continuity and insulation resistance of the installation.
