Guide 13 – Radical Function
Radical functions are of the form:
𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒂√𝒃𝒙 − 𝒉 + 𝒌
The value of 𝑏𝑥 – ℎ must be greater than or equal to zero. Any 𝑥 − 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 that make
𝑏𝑥 – ℎ < 0 are restricted from the domain.
The graphs of radical functions can be transformed by using methods like those used to
transform linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. We will now focus on
transformations of square root functions.
Transformations of the Square-Root Parent Function 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥
Transformation 𝑓(𝑥)Notation Examples
𝑦 = √𝑥 + 3 3 units up
Vertical translation 𝑓(𝑥) + 𝑘
𝑦 = √𝑥 − 4 4 units down
𝑦 = √𝑥 − 2 2 units right
Horizontal translation 𝑓(𝑥 − ℎ)
𝑦 = √𝑥 + 1 1 unit left
𝑦 = 6√𝑥 vertical stretch by 6
Vertical stretch/compression 𝑎𝑓(𝑥) 1 1
𝑦 = 2 √𝑥 vertical compression by 2
1
Horizontal 1 𝑦 = √5 𝑥 horizontal stretch by 5
stretch/compression 𝑓 ( 𝑥)
𝑏 𝑦 = √3𝑥 horizontal compression by 3
1
−𝑓(𝑥) 𝑦 = −√𝑥 across x-axis
Reflection
𝑓(−𝑥) 𝑦 = √−𝑥 across y-axis
For the graph of the function: we use the graph of as a baseline,
but since we know that its graph is translated two units down, as show
below:
Elements of a radical function
1. Vertex 𝑉(ℎ, 𝑘)
● To find the vertex (point of origin), we must solve for "x" inside the root and
the solution of x will be the x-coordinate of the vertex and we will use "k"
from the mathematical model for the y-coordinate.
2. x-intercept
● It is solved for "𝑥" when 𝑦 = 0; then 𝑓(𝑥) = 0.
3. y-intercept
● It is solved for "𝑦” when 𝑥 = 0; then 𝑓(0) = 𝑦.
4. Graph
5. Domain
6. Range
