INTRODUCTION
Hi everyone, I want to tell you a quick story about my friend Anna. She is very smart and works
really hard. She has a 3.8 GPA, great internship experience, and speaks three languages.
Last year, she applied for many jobs—but she didn’t get any interviews. She even changed her
resume, but the result was the same.
Then one day, she removed her date of birth from her resume. Suddenly, she got a call for an
interview.
Why?
Maybe it was because of her age—maybe she looked too young.
That made me think: is the hiring system really fair?
So today, I want to talk about how AI (Artificial Intelligence) is changing hiring?
Let me walk you through the introduction part.
Before AI, everything was done by people. Human resources staff had to read each resume,
choose who to interview, and make the final decision. This took a lot of time. And many times,
the decision was not fair. YN, Maybe the hirer was just in a bad mood that day.
Like, no coffee, got stuck in traffic, or their cat ignored them and then saw
your name. Wrong time, wrong place, and then no job for you.
Now let me tell you why this is important to me.
I am an international student. One day, I will also look for a job in Canada. I want to be chosen
because of my skills and what I can do—not because of my accent or where I come from.
That’s why I really care about this topic. If hiring is not fair, many good people can lose their
chance.
PROBLEM
Let’s talk about the problems in the hiring process.
In many companies, hiring decisions are still influenced by something called unconscious bias.
This means people sometimes make unfair choices without even knowing it. They may prefer
someone just because of their race, gender, age, or background, not because of their skills.
Even today, the hiring process is not always fair. Sometimes it is fair, sometimes it is not.
That means there is inconsistency. One person may get the job quickly, but another person with
the same skills may not even get an interview. That makes the process confusing and unfair.
Some companies have tried to fix this. They used blind resumes, which means resumes that
hide personal details. The goal is to help employers focus only on skills and experience, not
their background.
There are also some real examples. In the United States, one job applicant said he was rejected
by an AI system more than 100 times. He believed it was because of his age and race. Another
case is from Amazon. Their hiring tool gave better results to men and gave lower scores to
resumes that included the word “women’s.”
These examples show that the hiring process is still not fair, even when AI is involved. The
system can still make mistakes or copy the same bias that humans have.
SOLUTION
Now let’s talk about how AI can help fix the hiring problems.
AI is a tool that can read and understand information very quickly. In hiring, AI can look at
hundreds of resumes in just a few seconds. It can focus only on the important skills and work
experience. It does not look at someone’s photo, name, or age. This can help reduce bias and
save time.
Some companies use AI tools like HiredScore. These tools try to help find the best people for the
job and avoid unfair choices. In some places, like New York, companies must let other people
check their AI to make sure it is fair.
But AI is not perfect.
If the computer learns from old data that is not fair, then it will also make unfair choices. For
example, if a company used to hire mostly men, the AI might also choose more men, even when
women are good for the job.
Also, AI can feel like a black box. We don’t always know how it makes decisions. That can
make people feel confused or nervous. People may not trust it. So, companies need to be open
and honest. They should explain how their AI works. This helps everyone feel more safe and
fair.
CONCLUSION
So, to finish my presentation, I want to say this:
AI can help make hiring faster and maybe more fair. It can look at skills and not judge people by
their name, age, or accent.
But AI is not magic. It still makes mistakes, especially if it learns from bad data. So companies
must be careful. They should explain how their AI works and let other people check it.
As job seekers, we should also ask questions. We have the right to know if a company is using
AI and how it affects us.
If we all do our part, maybe the future of hiring can be more fair for everyone.
Thank you for listening.
