FROM MY HEAVEN

My neighbor, the killer

(Essay)

When we meet Susie Salmon, we know she is already in heaven, in her new home.
From there, she will tell us, with the unmistakable voice of a fourteen-year-old teenager,
a story as disturbing as it is encouraging: that of his own murder at the hands of a
neighbor after being raped and the recovery process they will have to go through
loved ones.

The account of a rape and a crime committed by a serial killer who approaches
girls and adolescents in a seemingly gentle manner, is just one of the many
examples of the cases that exist regarding sexual abuse, which we recognize as
the attitudes and behaviors that a person performs towards another, without their
consent or knowledge and for their own sexual satisfaction.

However, this film brings us closer in a more subtle way to some of the
characteristics of a child sexual abuser; let's remember then that in Susie's case
her abuser was her neighbor George Harvey, someone apparently known to her family
because he lives in her same neighborhood, Harvey has an effect on Susie and her sister
Lindsay certainly has some fear when seeing her act a little gloomy when they are near.

Upon further analyzing the characteristics of Susie's abuser, we noted that

he is a lonely man, without family, who has suffered the loss of his daughter due to the
Leukemia, George Harvey's daughter would have been born around the same time as Susie and two years later.
after his birth he would have died due to his condition, for the above reason
We can say that George had a great intrapersonal problem which makes us
to think that their behavior stems from the lack of a family environment and a
thought towards compensating for frustrations and shortcomings in their life.

On the other hand, the abuser George Harvey could also be listed in the group of the
abusive pedophile abusers because he not only abused the protagonist, but
also abused five other teenagers, who met the same fate as Susie,
he is also a man who had a compulsion and preference for teenagers
From the age of Salmon, his favorite hobbies and entertainments were the houses of
dolls, which she collected in order to get closer to her victims, this
attitude is evidenced at the moment when he shows Susie the different games and
toys in the secret hideout that he supposedly has for her and her friends.
Finally, we can say that this moving story leaves us a lesson to
everyone, and this is about considering the training and strengthening of tools
self-protection in children in their developmental context, develop the
skills needed to face threatening and dangerous situations and to promote in
they the recognition of differentiation between experiences of trust and security
personal.

However, as English teachers we must be aware that children

It is not advisable to talk to boys and girls about Child Sexual Abuse without having previously
addressed the theme of sexuality to some extent, since if the first
contact with the sphere of sexual development for a boy or girl occurs from the
Abuse experiences could foster a misguided understanding of sexuality,
contributing to the biased generation of their own sexual development exclusively
from the harmful or detrimental. It is therefore advisable to precede with some educational experience
of Sexual Development, before proposing any other preventive instance that addresses
directly the Child Sexual Abuse.
