Sermon The Sufficiency of Scripture
Sermon The Sufficiency of Scripture
INTRODUCTION
1 Timothy 3:15
The church exists to exalt the word of God, the church exists to be the pillar and support of the
truth, the truth revealed in His word. If we lose that main focus, we lose the reason for
our existence as children of God.
God blesses the people when they are faithful to this mission, to the mission of exalting His word and
not to implement our human-origin ideas but to know what God says in His word and
live it on a personal and congregational level.
For us believers, the Bible should be the starting point; there are many things that man
natural can do, have good ideas even good intentions, but for the son of God only
It should matter what God says, what His word says, because that is what we want to know and
obey.
For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
The word of God has effect, has impact, God sent His word to bear fruit, to
be effective in the lives of those who hear it. The word of God is spiritual food.
The word of God produces effect, the word of God always fulfills what God wishes it to fulfill.
it does not depend on the preacher, it does not depend on any man, it depends on his word, we only
We are instruments, the word of God is always effective, it is always effective.
2 Timothy 3:15-17 "and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to
to make wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by
God, and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, so that the
man of God be perfect, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Here we can see a complete description of the work and the sufficiency of the writings. Also in
Psalm 19:7 and 119 show us that His word speaks of the absolute sufficiency of the scriptures.
to achieve a spiritual impact. Everything necessary for the spiritual life and development of a person
it is found in the word of God, it is not necessary to add anything else, the word of God is
sufficient to be equipped, prepared for every good work. This speaks of absolute sufficiency,
this is the WORD OF GOD, in the scripture we have everything necessary for spiritual growth
and make us spiritually complete to live piously and serve God effectively. Not
we need nothing else, the word of God does not need additions, additions like psychology,
prophecies or personal revelations.
The word of God is truth, the enemy of the word of God is Satan the devil, that is why the Lord
he is called the father of lies and there are many emissaries of satan who are affecting the church
teaching the error and it gets worse every time.
For this reason, here the Apostle Paul defends the absolute sufficiency of the word of God, Paul...
he says to Timothy in verse 14, 'you received the word of God, do not stray from it, having
present that all scripture is inspired by God; this is not just any book, this is the word of
God, inspired by God.
Then Pablo begins to describe the work of writing, writing is useful for five effects:
And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to...
wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
The first effect of the word of God that we can see, the reason why God sends us his word.
and it does not return empty, it is because God desires that His word produces salvation. The word of God is
the medium that He uses to lead a person to the knowledge of the gospel.
As also mentioned in the book of John 20:31 'But these have been written so that you may believe'
that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing, you may have life in his name.
that this has been written, referring to all the writing so that they may believe in Jesus and be saved and have
eternal life, for that the word of God was written. The word of God is the source of truth that
brings salvation. That is why we proclaim the word of God, for it is the word of God that will
change the man, it is not our anecdotes, our experiences, our charisma, etc. It is the
the well taught word of God that is going to CHANGE men. There are no substitutes for this,
Nothing will convince the sinful man more than the revealed word.
This is the second effect of the word of God, and it does not refer to the process of teaching, but to the
The CONTENT of the word of God is useful to provide us with all the body of doctrine needed for a
Christian to live piously. The word of God is the deposit of truth, as we see in the
1 Timothy 6:20 "O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding the profane...
talks about vain things, and the arguments of the falsely called science” Here Pablo speaks to you
to Timothy, keep what has been entrusted to you, speaking of the doctrine and avoid chatter
empty.
The word is useful for teaching, the Bible provides us with the necessary doctrinal content for
help us form convictions, guide us in all our conduct, the Bible is a deposit of the
truth of God, where we can go and take what we need depending on the circumstance that
let's face in life, such as principles, truths, guidelines depending on the
situation we find ourselves in. There we find the answers to everything that as children of
God, we need you.
The third effect of the word of God, Here it shows us that the word of God also confronts,
correct us from error, straighten what is twisted both in conduct and in belief and faith.
Through words, we can realize which areas of our life are very wrong,
such as insensitivity, lack of empathy, lack of holiness, selfishness, bad temper, self-love, but
thank God that his word confronts us and pulls us out of error. God demands from us a
conduct worthy of a child of God.
We can see in Hebrews 4:12-13, "For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than ...
the sword that cuts both ways; and penetrates to divide the soul and the spirit, the joints and the marrow,
and discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no created thing that is not
it is manifested in his presence; rather, all things are naked and open to the eyes of
the one to whom we have to give an account. His word is alive because God is alive and effective when the
the word of God enlightens us, we cannot hide from it, we may try to conceal ourselves, but the
the word of God confronts you and you can no longer hide, and we realize that we are sinners
even saved, it is the word of God that does that work.
In a church where the word of God is preached with precision, sinners, those who live in
rebellion should not feel good in that church because the word of God confronts those who
They are wrong. The word of God illuminates what is wrong in our lives.
But the word of God not only rebukes us in conduct, but also rebukes us regarding
what is false in our life, false doctrine, something that is wrong. FOR EXAMPLE.... The word of
God is the standard by which we measure teaching, we are called to understand and outline with
precision the word of truth. (The word of God is absolute NOT relative)
It is important to read your word, to be familiar with it, to meditate on it, to obey it, that gives us
discernment. The word of God gives us discernment. Discernment comes as
the consequence of reading and obeying the word of God, regardless of the time or the years you
I have gained understanding from your commandments; in the Psalm 119:104
Therefore, I have hated every false way. "As far as we know the truth (that
it is in his word) we realize the lie and dismiss it from our life. The word of
God helps me distinguish between the false and the true.
As the fourth effect of the word of God is to correct, the Bible is useful for correcting, restoring,
rebuild, straighten, raise what was fallen. The word of God straightens us, restores us,
to the extent that we read it, study it, meditate on it, and obey it, it performs in our soul a
work of strengthening in the area where we have deviated or fallen. Acts 20:32 "And now,
brothers, I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which has the power to build you up
and give you inheritance with all the sanctified. "The word of God is powerful to rebuild what
was destroyed.
instruct in righteousness
The fifth and final effect of the word of God is to instruct in righteousness, here it refers to instructing,
to sustain, like when one raises a child, the child needs to be disciplined, not just given
instruction, but when it does not obey willingly, it must be done in other ways, like this
we are with God many times, he teaches us, instructs us, rebukes us but we do not learn because
the good things, and God has other methods. Hebrews 12:5-6 "you have already forgotten the exhortation that as
To sons it is directed, saying: My son, do not despise the discipline of the Lord, nor lose heart
When you are rebuked by Him; For the Lord disciplines whom He loves, and scourges every son whom He receives.
for the child. "We must not take lightly the Lord's rebuke or be discouraged when we are disciplined.
There is no child who does not occasionally receive the lashes of God, for it is necessary, for
God disciplines us for our good, He disciplines us so that we may share in His holiness, that is the
The purpose of discipline is holiness, good conduct, obedience.
Verse 17: "so that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly equipped for every good work."
good deed
The word of God is sufficient for every spiritual need, what more do we need to be
perfect or spiritually complete and equipped for every good work? Nothing, we do not need any.
Nothing more, your word is enough.
Summarizing what we saw, we can realize that the word of God is sufficient. The word
of God rebukes, convinces you of sin, analyzes and reveals the attitudes of the heart, confronts
our way of thinking. The word of God nourishes us, it is our spiritual food, there is no
growth or maturity without the word of God. maturity.
All these effects that we have reviewed teach, restore, correct, reprimand, and instruct in justice.
they are part of the process of the sanctification of the word of God in our lives, it is impossible to be
salvation without the word of God is impossible to achieve sanctification without the word of God.
We must not only hold on to the promises of the word of God but also to everything that is there.
find and we find direction, direction to our actions as Christians, direction to our
lives and circumstances that we face in life. For the Son of God, His word must be
sufficient, your word is sufficient and absolute, it is not relative, it does not change, it is the truth, it is the mouth of
God.
The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
