ARGUMENT
Oliver is a little boy who does not want to live with Queen Madam Mann, the gentleman
Sowerberry. He is an orphan boy who only has a silk handkerchief from his
mother. We observe how Dickens clearly and openly distinguishes the
spaces of the countryside and the city; and how they populate it with a series of
characters in harmony with the symbolism of one environment and the other. In this way,
while the countryside represents joy, happiness, well-being; the
city, London, symbolizes everything opposite: crime, dirt, the
poverty, prostitution, crime, or marginalization among other topics.
Oliver escapes from the camp, and more specifically from his last job as
funeral assistant, to march toward the city from which he has
heard wonders. But what Dickens does is throw the boy into the
underworld. Dickens openly criticizes the composition of the city
and all its elements but introduces its main character in this
world.

Sowerberry. But Oliver gets into a fight with one of the grave digger's boys, and
decide to escape and go to London. On the outskirts of the city, tired and
hungry, Oliver meets Jack Dawkins, who offers him a place where

wealthy or well-off in Victorian England. In this way,
we meet characters such as the Maylies, Mr. Giles, or the doctor.
While Dickens leaves the city in the hands of characters like Fagin and
his gang of criminals.
London is described as a succession of labyrinthine streets and alleyways,
patios through which Oliver is dragged, and in which he perceives the poverty, the
dirt or crime. In some passages, London resembles a
gothic city that reminds us of Poe's tales. And within that city

marginality of London largely fostered by immigration from

doubt in severely punishing a poor boy. But despite everything, in the end
imposes sanity. "Oliver Twist" is the story of a struggle to progress in
