THE SEVEN
DISPENSATIONS
(God's Plan Through the)
Centuries
Every believer we know is a dispensationalist, to some degree. If you,
today, animal sacrifices are not offered in the temple, in Jerusalem, because you
correctly discerns that it is not required to do exactly and totally the same
that the Jew of the Old, so you believe that there are different dealings of God with the
man as the centuries go by, therefore you are a
dispensationalist. I, you, he, all of us believers, are
dispensationalists, to some extent. The biggest difference among believers is whether
they are or are not consistent and are always ready to recognize on a full scale
all the clear modifications of God's treatment of man through the
centuries. Our prayer is that you and I may be consistent and whole in this,
no more, no less than what is clear in the Bible.
If we do not always keep in mind all the differences between the dispensations.
shown on this map, it will be IMPOSSIBLE to understand everything that
we should understand, it would be IMPOSSIBLE to interpret correctly
Many parts of the Bible, encompassing nearly all doctrines.
Among the questions we should ask ourselves every minute as we are
reading the Bible, they are: What is the literal and exact meaning of each word? What
Is it the immediate context? Who is speaking (God directly? God through
faithful prophet? A flawed man, even if the Bible records him infallibly?
The Devil?)? Who is speaking to him? TO WHAT DISPENSATION DOES THIS APPLY?
REFER (to the Jews in the dispensation of the law? to the believers of the dispensation of
churches? to whom is in the Tribulation? etc.)? How can Christ be perceived
here? What is the application of all this for me today? In what should I change in light of
Right? Is there any command of God that I need to obey, or obey more?
PART I: DISPENSATIONALISM.
THE ETERNAL PRINCIPLES AND THE DISPENSATIONS
OF GOD.
HARMONY AMONG THEM.

Opponents of dispensationalism have often accused us.
stating, for example, that we taught that under the Old Testament the
men were saved by the works of the law, while today they are saved by
grace through faith.
This accusation is false, as no dispensationalist we know believes
do not teach that the works of the law in themselves could never, nor can ever,
they will not be able to save. On the contrary, we believe and preach what God says regarding
the works of the law: "no flesh shall be justified before God by the works of the
law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin" (Rom. 3:20); and we believe and
we preach what God says about the sacrifices of the Old Testament: "it is impossible that the
the blood of bulls and goats takes away sins" (Heb. 10:4). Man has
I have always been saved by the grace of God, through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). Never
there was, there is not, nor will there be another way to be saved. This is a fixed principle
of which Hebrews 11 repeatedly bears witness.
However, this does not change the fact that:
a) the way God deals with men, and the terms of acceptance established by
They have been changed repeatedly over the centuries and;
b) therefore, faith in Him would be expressed in different ways throughout the centuries [by
For example, today we do not have to sacrifice lambs in churches.
Hebrews 11 also consistently bears witness to this dual fact, and no one
you can contest it.
THE PRINCIPLES OF GOD
A principle is a rule of morality or conduct. God possesses the
higher principles and never deviates from them.
Examples:
He has always hated and will always hate sin: at all times sin has been and will always be.
contrary to Your holy nature.
God has always delighted and will always delight in justice, mercy, and love.
God has never strayed, nor does He stray, nor will He stray in the slightest degree,
of these principles. Examples:
The principle of law, or of justice, has remained unchanged over the centuries.
Let's consider 3 murders:
by Cain before the Law,
by David during the law,
and for a believer after Christ.
Now, God hates these 3 murders and all of them had to be paid for.
eternal destiny of believers who committed this sin, they were paid for in death.
Christ).
The principle of faith, or grace, is equally immutable.
Before the law, 'Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness' (Rom. 4:3).
Under the law, 'In the same way, David declares blessed is the man to whom God
"imputes righteousness apart from works" (Rom. 4:6).
After the law, "He who does not practice but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his
"faith is credited to him as righteousness" (Rom. 4:5).
THE DISPENSATIONS OF GOD
WHAT IS A DISPENSATION?
While God's principles are related to His character, with His
nature, God's dispensations concern His ways of dealing
with those who are subject to Him, especially with man.
In Portuguese, in the dictionaries, the word 'dispense' only wants
to say 'distribute'. The word 'dispensation' therefore means 'act of '
to dispense or to distribute, or 'that which is dispensed or distributed.' (By
for example, in medical dispensaries, medications are dispensed,
distributed to the poor.)
In the New Testament in Greek, the word '3622 oikonomia' is used 7 times and
means 'management or government of the house'
3 times Almeida-1693 and ACF translated 'oikonomia' as 'stewardship' (Luc
16:2,3,4), and this is correct, what is wrong is what many do today, giving to
the word has the pejorative meaning of enjoyment of undue privileges. The correct meaning remains
"administration or governance of the house".
- 4 times Almeida-1693 and ACF translated "oikonomia" as "dispensation" (1Cor
9:17; Eph 1:10; 3:2; Col 1:25) and this is correct, what is wrong is what many do
today, restricting the meaning of the word simply to a period of time. The meaning
correct continues to be 'administration or governance of the house'.
The theological definition is: "A dispensation is a way [a system]"
particular of God to administer His reign over the world, as He
He progressively carries out His purpose for the history of the world.
Dispensation is commonly (but improperly) confused
with the corresponding period of time.
CHANGES IN GOD'S DISPENSATIONS
It must be evident even to the least attentive reader of the Scriptures that, in
the fall of man, there was a great change in God's dealings with him.
Before that, Adam and Eve had enjoyed uninterrupted communion with God.
inhabiting in ecstatic innocence, in the beautiful garden of Eden. But now everything
changed. Sin will separate all men from God. Adam and Eve were expelled.
of the garden. A deep awareness of sin and shame came to
to dominate them. They found themselves naked and had to get dressed. The man had to start to
earning a living for yourself and your family by working hard, and the woman
she had to bear children in pain. Worse than everything, sin had entered the world, and the
death also entered through sin. Certainly, all of this involved
a change in men's responsibilities towards God and towards
the others.
From now on, God's dealings with men were repeated times
moved. The Human Government was established after the flood, with Noah (Gen
9:6); the dispensation of the promise began with Abram (Gen. 12:1-3); "the law was
"given by Moses" (John 1:17); "grace and truth came through Jesus Christ"
(John 1:17) and was dismissed by Paul, the chief of sinners saved by the
grace (Ephesians 3:1-3).
Thus, while the principles of God never change, His dispensations,
Your dealings with men change from time to time. This includes
even the terms of acceptance with God:
in the beginning, bloody sacrifices (with blood) were required (Gen 17:14;
Heb 11:4
- later, circumcision was added (Gen 17:14);
subsequently, obedience to the entire Mosaic law was required (Exodus 19:5-6;
Rom 10:5);
- then, the baptism of repentance for the remission was requested
sins" (Mark 1:4; Acts 2:38);
and for today, the demand is: "TO THOSE WHO DO NOT PRACTICE,
BUT BELIEVES IN THE ONE WHO JUSTIFIES THE UNGODLY, HIS FAITH IS
IMPUTED AS JUSTICE" (Rom 4:5)
Let us study this diagram in detail:
Let's note that:
1) This diagram does not intend to indicate that whenever a dispensing
she started canceling all the agreements from the previous dispensations and the
replaced it with a new and totally different approach. On the contrary, most
the dispensations add more regulations while maintaining many
of the terms of previous dispensations. For example: despite the call of
Abraham introduced the dispensation of the promise, but did not bring the dispensation.
preceding an end, as the human government is still in effect today.
Most of the effects of dispensations are cumulative rather than
substitutives.
2) Although today God rejects works for salvation, He nonetheless required them.
(as evidence of true faith) under other dispensations. As already
we explain, this did not happen, because the works themselves could
to save, but because they were the necessary expression of faith.
3) The saints of past centuries were only required to believe in everything the
that God had already revealed until then. They were saved simply because
they trusted in God and believed in everything He had already said, even if they did not
perfectly foreseeing the whole plan of God, particularly not foreseeing
perfectly Christ pouring His blood for and in place of them, nor
understanding everything of all types given by God.

THE SEVEN DISPENSATIONS

Dispensation: INNOCENCE (or Freedom):
RESPONSIBILITY (so little and light! oh, the love of God!): NO

You shall not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil;
for in the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die. (Genesis 2:17)
CRASH (oh, the wickedness of humanity in general!): THEY ATE
And she saw that the tree was good for food, and pleasant to the
eyes, and a desirable tree for gaining wisdom; took of its fruit, and
She ate, and also gave to her husband, and he ate with her. (Genesis 3:6)
JUDGMENT: CURSE AND DEATHS
The woman said: I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
with pain you will give birth to children; and your desire will be for your husband, and he will
he will dominate. And to Adam he said: Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and
eat from the tree that I commanded you, saying: You shall not eat of it, it is cursed
the earth because of you; with pain you will eat from it all the days of your life.
Thorns and thistles it will produce for you; and you will eat the herb of the field.
To the woman he said, 'I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.' To Adam he said, 'Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat from it,' cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.'
2a. dispensation: CONSCIOUSNESS (or Self-determination)
RESPONSIBILITY (so little and light! oh, the love of God!):

The LORD God made tunics of skin for Adam and his wife, and the

Abel also brought of the firstborn of his sheep, and of his
fat; and the LORD looked upon Abel and his offering. (Genesis 4:4)
CRASH (oh, the wickedness of man in general!): CORRUPTION
God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had
corrupted its way upon the earth. (Genesis 6:12)
JUDGMENT: UNIVERSAL DELUGE
And the LORD said: I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth,
from man to animal, to reptile, and to the bird of the heavens; because to me
I regret having made them. (Genesis 6:7)
Then God said to Noah: The end of all flesh has come before me

FRACAS (oh, the wickedness of man in general!): THEY DISOBEYED
And they said: Come, let us build a city and a tower whose top reaches
in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, so that we will not be scattered over the
face of all the earth. (Genesis 11:4)
JUICE: CONFUSION OF LANGUAGES
Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the

face of all the earth. (Genesis 11:9)
4a. dispensation: of the PROMISE (or Patriarchal)
RESPONSIBILITY (so little and light! oh, the love of God!):
STAY IN CANAAN
Now, the LORD said to Abram: Go out from your land, from your relatives and from
your father's house, to the land that I will show you. And I will make you a great

And I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. (Genesis 12:1-3)
And the LORD appeared to Abram, and said: To your descendants I will give this
There he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. (Genesis 12:7)
FRACASSO (oh, the evil of man in general!): LIVED IN EGYPT
And there was famine in that land; and Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there,
for there was a great famine in the land. (Genesis 12:10)
And they took their cattle and the goods they had acquired in the land of
Canaan, and they came to Egypt, Jacob and all his descendants with him;
Genesis 46:6
JUDGMENT: SLAVERY
A new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph;
He said to his people: Behold, the people of the children of Israel are many, and more
more powerful than us. Come on, let us use wisdom towards them, so that
do not multiply, and it happens that, when war comes, they also come together
with our enemies, and fight against us, and rise from the earth. And they placed
about them, the major tax burdens, to afflict them with their loads. Because
they built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more
they afflicted me, and the more they multiplied, the more they grew; in such a way
who were angry because of the children of Israel. And the Egyptians made

1:8-14
5a. dispensation: of the LAW (or of Israel)
RESPONSIBILITY (so little and light! oh, the love of God!): TO KEEP
The Law
Then all the people answered with one voice and said: All that the LORD
he has spoken, we will do. And Moses reported to the LORD the words of the people.
(Exodus 19:8)
CRASH (oh, the wickedness of man in general!): THEY VIOLATED THE LAW,
They rejected Christ
The president, however, said: But what harm did he do? And they shouted even more,
saying: Let him be crucified. (Matthew 27:23)

no more, no less than what is clear in the Bible.
Know this, that in the last days perilous times will come.
For there will be men who are lovers of themselves, greedy, conceited,
arrogant, blasphemous, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, profane, Without
natural affection, irreconcilable, slanderers, incontinent, cruel, without
love for the good, traitors, obstinate, proud, more friends
of the delights of the friends of God, having the appearance of piety, but
denying its effectiveness. From this, stay away. Because from this number are those who
they break into houses and take captive foolish women loaded with
sins, led by various lusts; Always learning, and
they can never come to the knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3:1-7)
JUDGMENT: THE GREAT TRIBULATION
For there will be great affliction, such as has never been since the beginning
of the world until now, nor will there ever be. (Matthew 24:21)
For the great day of your wrath has come; and who is able to stand?
(Revelation 6:17)
THE 70th WEEK OF DANIEL (AND THE GREAT TRIBULATION)
Rapture of the Saved (from the New Testament)
For the same Lord will descend from heaven with a shout, and with the voice of an archangel,
and with the trumpet of God; the dead in Christ will rise first
first. Then we, those who remain alive, will be taken up
together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, and so
we will always be with the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)
THROWN DEVIL:
And when the dragon saw that he was thrown to the earth, he pursued the woman who
gave birth to a son. And the woman was given two great wings.
eagle, to fly to the desert, to its place, where it is sustained by
a time, and times, and half a time, out of the sight of the serpent. And the
the serpent spewed out of its mouth, behind the woman, water like a river, so that
the current would pull her away. And the earth helped the woman; and the earth opened
his mouth, and swallowed the river that the dragon had thrown from his mouth. And the dragon
he became angry with his wife, and went to make war against the remnant of her
seed, those who keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of
Jesus Christ. (Revelation 12:13-17)
7a. dispensation: OF THE KINGDOM (or of the Millennium) (Kingdom

OBEY AND WORSHIP CHRIST

with justice to the poor, and will reprimand with equity the meek of the earth; and
he will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will kill
to the wicked, And justice will be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt of
your kidneys. (Isaiah 11:3-5)
And it will happen that all who remain from all the nations that came
against Jerusalem, they will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of
Armies, and to celebrate the feast of tabernacles. And it will happen that, if
if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the
LORD of hosts, no rain will fall upon it. (Zechariah 14:16-17)
BREAKDOWN (oh, the wickedness of man in general!): FINAL REBELLION
And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison, and he will go out to
to deceive the nations that are on the four corners of the earth, Gog and
Magogue, whose number is like the sand of the sea, to gather them together in
battle. And they ascended over the width of the land, and surrounded the camp of the
saints and the beloved city; and fire descended from God, from heaven, and consumed them.
(Revelation 20:7-9)
JUDGMENT: THE GREAT WHITE THRONE, HELL
I saw a great white throne, and the one who was sitting on it, of whom
presence fled the earth and the sky; and no place was found for them. And I saw the
dead, great and small, who were before God, and the books were opened
books; and another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged
for the things that were written in the books, according to their works. And gave
the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead that
they were there; and they were judged each one according to their works. And death and
the hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And
those not found written in the book of life were cast into the lake of
fire. (Revelation 20:11-15)

b.b. eternal condemnation Revelation 20:15.
