UNIVERSAL DESIGN ABODE - SPACE RACE ARCHITECTS

One of the noticeable design element coming in trend with the

contemporary home design is the openness of interiors and
the easy connection of spaces. The seamless connection of the
interiors and exteriors, and elimination of unnecessary walls,
completely change the ambiance and feel of the homes.

Set in a residential layout of Jalandhar, this home comes across

as an enchanting visual delight of a ‘Universally Designed Abode’,
where the entire family can be nurtured in harmony. The design
follows the well-known principle of ‘simple living and high
thinking’, propagated by Mahatma Gandhi.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN ABODE - SPACE RACE ARCHITECTS

Built on the principles of ‘universal design’ and ‘inclusivity’, the design approach leads
to an equitable distribution of spaces with enhanced flexibility. The spaces get an
intuitive character through its focus on no tolerance for error, low physical effort, and
optimal space utilization. The client here wanted a barrier free space and one that was
easy to access. The residence is oblong in shape and linear in plan. The facade depicts
an interesting scale of gradually increasing levels with reducing the floor space.

The outer shell is defined with a mixed material palette of wood, stones and glass. The
patterned screen gives the house much needed privacy from the front road and the
adjoining homes. The house has a brief and neatly landscaped access from the road.
A small and beautiful lawn surprises one on entering the house. The walkway till the
main door overwhelms one with the contrasting textures and colors of the stones and
wood applied in the area.

The house features three green courts, one at the entry, the other next to the lift and the
third at the rear end adjacent to the kitchen. The rear court is designed as a meditative
space with an Om symbol with a vertical green wall in the backdrop. This improves
the air quality and filters the pollutants from entering the indoor spaces. The ground
floor is planned as a blend of public and private space. It holds a parents’ bedroom, a
guest bedroom, an informal sit out next to the foyer, a formal lounge and kitchen at
rear end with dining area. The formal lounge is well connected with the rear meditative
landscape visible through a glass partition. An open built-in modular kitchen with a
C-Shaped layout is lit with LED lights and features a comfortable dining besides it.

Kitchen and Dining

The ease of accessing the spaces can be felt by the integration of ramps at the porch as
well the front landscape and at the rear landscape court, kitchen. The upper level is also
accessible with an elevator just next to the dining area. The upper level of the abode
houses three bedrooms, an informal lounge, a utility and an open sit out with pergola
roof in the front left end. The two bedrooms comfortably suffice the needs to the two
brothers. The top most level is dedicated for the kid’s room which has an indoor play
area.
8

An informal lounge is also provided that gels with the modern taste and trends with its
quirky wired furniture pieces having tint of gold, cushions for chairs and black marble
for the tables. The darker shade of beige and golden pastels is also reflected in the
curtains and the jalli patterns on the side wall. A beautiful open sit-out with pergola roof
is designed by the entrance acting as a buffer zone for family gatherings and quenches
the need for the sunshine.

Along with efficient use of spaces, the house is also designed to be self-sufficient by
including measures to save energy. This is achieved by use of solar panels and rain
water harvesting system. The material palette of the house follows the design intent. It
is kept minimal, with highlights of dark shades as seen in the furniture and furnishings.
Luxury and richness is exuded by the neutral palette in varying tints of gold, brown and
grey. These are explicitly noticed in the home decors and details. The decor elements
across the house are carefully handpicked that have an aesthetic appeal.

Stones are used for the boundary wall and mild steel tubes for the pergola featured on
the upper level. The vertical slits at the right end of the façade, beautifully notifies the
light and shadow effect. Spacious feel is also experienced in the bathrooms which have
organic sit-outs in the walk-in-closets and striking lightings that add to the richness of
the marble clad space.
