CREATIVE ARTS GRADE 5
Rounders
Key Rules:
Teams:
Two teams of 6 to 15 players, with a maximum of 9 on the field at any one time.
Innings:
Games usually have two innings, with teams alternating between batting and fielding.
Batting:
The batter gets one good ball bowled to them and must try to hit it.
Running:
If the ball is hit, the batter must run to at least the first base and can advance further if
they choose.
Scoring:
A rounder (point) is scored when a batter successfully runs around all four bases.
Outs:
Batters can be put out by being caught out, stumped out, run out or if the fielding team
reaches a base with the ball before the batter.
Caught Out:
If a fielder catches the ball cleanly after it's been hit by the batter, before it bounces, the
batter is out.
Stumped Out:
If a fielder touches the post with the ball while the batter is running towards it, the
batter is out.
Run Out:
- If a fielder touches the batter with the ball while the batter is running between posts,
the batter is out.
- If a batter runs inside a post, they are out.
- If a batter loses contact with a post while the bowler has possession of the ball in the
bowler's square, they are out.
Other Ways to be Out:
- If the batter deliberately drops or throws the bat while running, they are out.
- If the batter's foot is outside the batting square when the ball is bowled, they are out.
- If the batter obstructs a fielder while not running between posts, they are out.
No Balls:
A "no ball" is called when the bowler delivers the ball outside of the acceptable
parameters.
Obstruction:
If a fielder obstructs a runner, the batter may be awarded a half-rounder or allowed to
advance to the next base.
Switching Places:
When a batter scores a rounder, or when the batting team has three outs, the batting
and fielding teams switch positions.
Gameplay:
1. Bowling: The bowler bowls the ball underarm towards the batter.
2. Hitting: The batter tries to hit the ball with the bat.
3. Running: If the ball is hit, the batter runs to as many posts as possible before the
fielders return the ball to the post the batter is heading for, according to ressp.co.uk.
4. Fielding: The fielding team tries to get batters out by catching the ball, stumping the
base, or catching the batter out while running.
5. Scoring: Points (rounders) are scored when a batter completes a circuit around the four
posts.
6. Winning: The team with the most rounders at the end of the game wins.
