Addition involving money
1, Method 1: First add the dollars, and then add the cents.
Example:
Find the sum of $3.45 and $7.85.
$3.45 +57. $10.45 +55, $11.00 +308, $11.30
$3.45 + $7.85 = $11.30
2. Method 2: First add the cents, and then add the dollars.
Example:
Find the sum of $16.45 and $15.55.
$16.45 +54, $17.00 +15, $32.00
$16.45 + $15.55 = $32.00
3. Method 3: Add dollars and cents in the same way as adding
whole numbers.
Example:
Find the sum of $9.45 and $23.85.

Subtraction involving money
1. Method 1: First subtract the dollars, and then subtract the
cents.
Example:
Find the difference between $17.60 and $6.35.
$17.60 8°. $11.60 —2*, $11.25
$17.60 - $6.35 = $11.25
2. Method 2: First subtract the cents, and then subtract the
dollars.
Example:
Find the difference between $38.65 and $29.70.
$38.65 —*, $38.00 —°* , $37.95 —*9, $8.95
$38.65 $29.70 = $8.95
3. Method 3: Subtract dollars and cents in the same way as
subtracting whole numbers.
Example:
Find the difference between $23.85 and $11.95

(a) What is $32.85 - $12.25?

Solution:
(a) $32.85 —5", $20.85 —“°¢, $20.60
$32.85 - $12.25 = $20.60
(by $49.15 —821, $28.15 —15¢, $28.00 —*, $27.55
$49.15 - $21.60 = $27.55 |
Worked Example 4
Wayne bought a writing pad and a calculator from the bookshop.
The calculator cost $26. He gave the cashier a $50 note and got _
back $19.50 change. How much did the writing pad cost?
Solution:
