Quick Review
Continuous function: Non Removable Discontinuity:
A function f (x) is said to be continuous If lim f (*) = lim f(x),
at x = a, x’a
if lim f(x) =f(a)
then fx) is said to be non-removable
ie., lim f(ah) = lim f(a + h) =f(a)
h’0 h->0
discontinuous.
i.e., L.H.L at a = R.H.L at a = f(a) Continuity in an Interval:
ii. If the graph of a function has no break or gap or i. A function f (x) is said to be continuous in an
jump, then it is said to be continuous. open interval (a, b), if it is continuous at every
point in (a, b)
Discontinuous function: A function f (x) is said to be continuous in the
fis said to be discontinuous at x = a, if it is not closed interval [a, b], if it is
continuous atx=a. a. Continuous at every point of the open
interval (a, b).
The discontinuity may be due to any of the b. Right continuous at x = a.
following reasons:
i.e., lim f(a + h) = f(a)
h0
i. lim fr) or lim f(x) or both may not exist.
r’a
C Left continuous at x = b.
ii. lim f(x) and lim f(x) both exist but are not i.e., lim f(bh) = f(b)
