Aims and Objective

The course aims to introduce and develop the English language skills required for success in academic study at
undergraduate level.

Intended Learning Outcomes of the Course

On completion of the course, students should be able to

ILO1. deploy an extended range of academic English (grammar and vocabulary);


ILO2. use efficient reading strategies, including skimming, scanning, inferring meaning and note-taking;
ILO3. plan and write structured essays that are supported with academic and referenced evidence;
ILO4. identify, comprehend and take notes on ideas when listening to lectures and presentations;
ILO5. participate actively in course activities - completing tasks, expressing ideas and engaging with others.

Syllabus

1. Introduction to Academic English and College Essays


• The need for academic English at college level, how it differs from general English at secondary level

2. Reading
• Choosing relevant, authoritative texts which meet academic standards for accuracy and authority
• Reading efficiently: skimming, scanning, and inferring meaning
• Identifying and understanding key details
• Taking notes on reading texts

3. Writing Skills
• Understanding essay requirements and types
• Essay planning and support
• Writing an introduction and conclusion
• Writing a structured paragraph that is supported with academic, referenced evidence
• APA Referencing style and the use of paraphrases and quotations
4. Listening and Speaking
• Speaking skills: checking understanding, expressing views, reaching an agreement, and reflecting on
experiences
• Listening skills: understanding lectures and presentations, and taking notes

5. Language Extension: Grammar and Vocabulary


• Reporting, contrasting and linking ideas
• Word families (noun, verb, adjective and adverb forms) and the use of prefixes
• Academic vocabulary and impersonal writing
