20. (a) Explain why H2 and O2 do not react at room temperature. (2)
(b) Write the rate equation for the reaction A2 + 3B2 → 2C, if the overall order of the reaction
is zero.
21. Half-life for a first order reaction 693 s. Calculate the time required for 90% completion of this (2)
reaction.
[R = 8.314 JK-1 mol-1] OR
For a first order reaction, show that time required for 99% completion is twice the time
required for completion of 90% reaction.

This section contains 7 questions with internal choice in two questions. The following
questions are short answer type and carry 3 marks each.

24. The molality of a solution of ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) in water is 1.55 m. How many grams of (3)
ethyl alcohol are dissolved in 2 kg of water?
25. Two half-reactions of an electrochemical cell are given below: (3)
MnO–4 (aq) + 8H+ (aq) + 5e– → Mn2+ (aq) + 4H2O (I), E° = 1.51 V
Sn2+ (aq) → Sn4+ (aq) + 2e–, E° = + 0.15 V.
Construct the redox equation from the standard potential of the cell and predict if the reaction
is reactant favoured or product favoured.
26. Hydrogen peroxide, H2O2 (aq) decomposes to H2O (l) and O2 (g) in a reaction that is first (3)
order in H2O2 and has a rate constant k = 1.06 × 10-3min-1.
(i) How long will it take for 15% of a sample of H2O2 to decompose?
(ii) How long will it take for 85% of the sample to decompose?

A first order gas phase reaction : A2B2(g) → 2A(g) + 2B(g) at the temperature 400°C has the
rate constant k = 2.0 × 10-4 sec-1. What percentage of A2B2 is decomposed on heating for 900
seconds? (Antilog 0.0781 = 1.197)
27. For the complex [Fe(en)2Cl2], Cl, (en = ethylene diamine), identify (3)
(i) the oxidation number of iron,
(ii) the hybrid orbitals and the shape of the complex,
(iii) the magnetic behaviour of the complex,
(iv) the number of geometrical isomers,
(v) whether there is an optical isomer also, and
(vi) name of the complex. (At. no. of Fe = 26)
28. (i) Haloalkanes undergo nucleophilic substitution whereas haloarenes undergo (2+1)
electrophilic substitution. Explain.
(ii) Suggest a possible reason for the following observations
The C – Cl bond length in chlorobenzene is shorter than that in CH3 – Cl.

The following questions are long answer type and carry 5 marks each. Two questions
have an internal choice.
31. (a)Two liquids X and Y on mixing form an ideal solution. The vapor pressure of the solution (5)
containing 2 mol of X and 1 mol of Y is 550 mm Hg. But when 4 mol of X and 1 mole of Y
are mixed, the vapor pressure of solution thus formed is 560 mm Hg. What will be the vapor
pressure of pure X and pure Y at this temperature?
(b)Illustrate elevation in boiling point with the help of vapour pressure vs temperature diagram
and show that it is a colligative property

(a) The degree of dissociation of in a dilute aqueous solution, containing 7.0 g of salt per 100 g of (5)
water at is 70%. If the vapor pressure of water at is 760 mm of Hg, calculate the vapor
pressure of the solution
(c) Illustrate depression in freezing point with the help of vapour pressure vs temperature
diagram and show that it is a colligative property.
32. Give reasons for the following:
(i)Electrode potential E0 irregular for M2+/M systems in 3d series.
(ii)Decrease in the ionic radii of M2+ in 3d series.
(iii)Most transition metals form complexes.
(iv)Ce4+ is a good analytical reagent.
(v) Transition elements are less reactive than alkali metals or alkaline earth metals.

(i) Some halogen containing compounds are useful in daily life. Some compounds (5)
of this class are responsible for exposure of flora and fauna to more and more of
UV light which causes destruction to a great extent. Name the class of these halo
compounds. In your opinion, what should be done to minimise harmful effects of
these compounds.
(ii) Why are aryl halides less reactive towards nucleophilic substitution reactions
than alkyl halides? How can we enhance the reactivity of aryl halides?
OR
(i) An alkyl halide X having molecular formula on treatment with potassium tert- (5)
butoxide gives two isomeric alkenes Y and Z but alkene y is symmetrical. Both
alkenes on hydrogenation give 2, 3-dimethylbutane.
Identify X, Y, and Z.
(ii) Distinguish between C2H5Br and C6H5Br with a chemical test.
