Additional Port Information
• Piraeus Traffic VHF Ch 13; 14, 15
• If required to wait more than 12 hours for berth, vessel may anchor following deep water anchoring procedure (i.e. fully under power).
Keep good clearance from other anchored vessels. Especially if vessel is in light condition, vessels have been known to drag and
collide with other vessels.
• Pilot boarding position = 37-55.94 N; 023-36.46 E
• VHF Channels for Pilots = 12. Sometimes vessels are rushed during Pilot embarkation / disembarkation. Bridge Team should
evaluate situation carefully and proceed slowly & safely.
• Pilot Boarding by boat, Lee side 1m above water level
• Approximate location of anchorage, 37-55 N; 023-33.5 E
• Average distance between the vessel in the anchorage = 0.3-0.5 nm
• Generally 2 tugs are used for berthing & unberthing but try to reduce number of tugs.
• Forward tug usually assists & does not make fast.
• Aft tug is made fast through centre lead with ship’s line.
• Tugs = Leon 2000/20 t, Taxiarchis 2500/25 t, Pantanassa 3500/35 t
• Mooring 4 + 2, Depth available alongside = 15m. East Pier 18m, length 500m, West Pier 320m, depth 12m
• Fenders are rubber cylinders.
Company Policies for port manoeuvering
• Approach at controlled speed.
• Inbound vessel must give way to outbound vessel per good seamanship. Manoeuvre per COLREGS.
• Do not approach beyond Pilot Station. You do NOT have to blindly follow port / pilot instructions.
• Master and Bridge Team are always in charge of maneovering, even with Pilot onboard.
• Discuss Harbour Manoeuvering Plan with Pilot as soon as he boards and ensure agreement before proceeding.
• If UKC is less than twice the draft, beware of shallow water effects such as increased stopping distance or increased turning circle.
• Remember to proceed slowly and as per plan. In case of slightest doubt of safety of manoeuvre, do not hesitate to go full astern and drop
both anchors. There is NO hurry!
• Duty officer is expected to be a ‘co-pilot’ and assist Master in monitoring of the manoeuvre. He must announce loudly the next change of
course or speed 1 cable before such change. He must also announce loudly any deviation from Harbour Manoeuvering Plan and alert
Master & Pilot.
• Duty Officer must monitor progress of vessel by parallel-indexing and be aware of position by using radar distances.
• Do not hesitate to cancel or abort manoeuvre when conditions are unfavourable. Such conditions may be: Zero visibility, wind speed > 25
kts, Tug require for safe manoeuvering not available, gantries are not clear (at bow or stern ).
• Always berth in a parallel manner. Bring ship parallel to berth when one breadth off, stop thrusters/tugs when half breadth off.
