GREEN COMPUTING

Who are some of the leaders of the movement?

ABOUT GREEN COMPUTING? WHICH CORPORATIONS ARE GOING TO
HEAD? WHAT ORGANIZATIONS AMBIENTAL
DO THEY PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE?
The term Green Technologies began to be used after the Agency of
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the United States will develop the Star program.
Energy in the year 1992, the international organization Greenpeace is considered a leader in
green computing and closely monitors the actions of the main manufacturers of devices
electronics to evaluate how environmentally friendly their procedures and products are,
in a race whose ultimate goal is to reduce ecological damage. Some governments and
supranational organizations like the European Union have taken defense very seriously
of the environment and have formulated some of the main regulations for the
elimination of the use of hazardous materials in electronic devices.

We also found other leaders in green computing, which are:

Dell
British Telecom
IBM
HP
INTEL

Some corporations lead the way such as: Intel, Dell, AOC, PALM, CISCO, SAP,
XEROX, SONY, Panasonic, TRIPP LITE, APC, Sun Microsystems to name a few.
Large companies such as: BMC, CA, Hewlett Packard, and IBM added applications that
they manage the energy of their data centers.
DVFS (Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling) is an algorithm that reduces consumption
energy by changing the voltage and frequency of the CPU

Google would be one of the leading corporations as it uses efficient servers, compared to
of alternative energy and energy reduction strategies in data centers.

In Mexico, there is a genuine concern about environmental issues and this can be seen
in the initiative of various government agencies such as SEMARNAT, PROFEPA, INE,
or like CONAE that supports Mexican companies in reducing CO2 emissions,
but focusing on industrial processes, on machinery improvement, on the installations of
boilers, among others, and has not focused on conducting a specific study on how the
energy consumption can be significantly reduced in the area of IT.
In Colombia, we also find organizations like EcoComputo, which was born as
a response to the initiative of the National Government to promote social responsibility
corporate in Colombia. Thus, in compliance with the provisions established in the Resolution
1512 of 2010 issued by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development MADS, the
producers, manufacturers, importers, distributors, and marketers of computers
and peripherals, and the ANDI (National Business Association of Colombia), integrated
a collective, with 41 companies initially, for selective collection and environmental management
of computer and/or peripheral waste.

WHAT ARE THE MOST RECENT TRENDS IN THE

GREEN COMPUTING? WHAT KIND OF IMPACT ARE THEY HAVING
HAVING?
The most recent trends are outsourcing data storage to the cloud.
vitalization of the operating system. Simulating multiple machines on the hardware of a single one.
These trends optimize the use of hardware and energy consumption such as:

Data centers: Proper database design is important, as it is in this

where all the support infrastructure for the various computational services is housed, and

medium and/or long term.
Virtualization: Virtualization is a technology that shares computing resources.
in different environments allowing different systems to run on the same machine
physics. Creates a unique physical resource for servers, storage, and applications.
Server virtualization allows the operation of multiple servers on a
unique physical server.
Client / Server: sometimes referred to as a thin client, maintains the software, the
applications and the data on the server. Information can be accessed from
any location and the client does not require much memory or storage.
Computer networks: A computer network is the application of a set of computers to a
common problem at the same time, usually for a technical or scientific problem that
requires a large number of processing cycles or access to large amounts of
data.
Cloud computing: it is a form of distributed computing that provides to its
users the possibility of utilizing a wide range of resources on computer networks
to complete your work.
Telecommuting: working from home using an electronic link with the central office,
telecommuting allows employees of an organization to stay at home and do
his work without being present in the office.
Technology is important in society, in a minimal part it affects the impact.
negative environmental impact in the production and use of IT equipment. There are two reasons
different, fundamental in the efforts to counteract global warming and others
environmental problems.

What can individuals do to contribute to the movement of the

Green computing? Is the movement worth it?
Individuals can contribute to achieving a healthier environment free from
environmental pollution. turning off their PCs at night, changing their LCD monitors
a LED, using inkjet printers printing on both sides of the sheets, program the
PC to turn off the monitor and the hard drive after a period of inactivity, etc.
It is worth it because the risks are global, long-term, and irreversible.

We must also take the following into account:

Analyzing the electrical consumption of computer components.

Managing the ecological footprint.
Compensating for the emissions produced by computer systems.
Recycling electronic waste.
Increasing the lifespan of computers.
Promoting energy efficiency.
Creating green data centers.

I believe that movement is important and absolutely necessary, and that it is worth investing in.
efforts and time to promote green computing and thus contribute to an environment
healthier and to be able to live in a better world.
