APOCALYPSE CHAPTER TWO AND THREE: THE MESSAGE TO THE SEVEN CHURCHES, ANALYSIS
OF MEANING
(According to Holzhauser Verschraege and Julio M. Matovelle)
According to these authors, there were many churches at the time this message was given and that was chosen the
name of those seven Churches because they had a meaning to declare what the church would live in the
future.
1RA- EPHESIANS: vv 2, 1-7: means my will.
1. It refers to the age of the Church where the sowing of the Gospel takes place, the apostolic work, the
preaching of the Kingdom. Where Jesus came to establish the Kingdom where His will is lived.
2. Titles of the Lord: that of the seven stars, meaning that a full dissemination of light was made and a
harvest of saints Another title is 'the one who walks among the 7 golden candlesticks' which means presence
of Jesus in his Church.
3. The achievements: works and efforts to spread the gospel, suffering and patience in the difficulties of
apostolic work such as fighting against false apostles (Nicolas: Acts 6:5 and Alexander 2 Timothy 4:14).
Other achievements are the virtue of consistency–perseverance and the abhorrence of the Nicolaitans (Gnostics
followers of Nicolas).
4. Errors: having lost the love of the beginning when they got tired of waiting for the second coming.
Warning: Repent, otherwise I will remove your lampstand, that is, the light of the Holy Spirit will go to others.
regions, to other people.
6. Promise: They will eat from the tree of life: holiness, eternal banquet.
1
2DA- ESMIRNA: vv 2, 8-11: It means myrrh (which is used for the dead), and also irrigation.
It refers to the time of the martyrs (the following three centuries), during which Christians died and their blood
It serves as irrigation to the seed of the gospel that is spread throughout the earth.
2. Titles of the Lord: The first and the last. It means that Jesus was the model of man's creation and
that He will be the one who has the final victory over history. "The one who was dead and came back to life"
it means that Jesus was the first resurrected among the dead and that just as He overcame death
the ones who follow will win.
3. Achievements: you suffer for my sake, you are rich because there are riches of grace poured out in that era, you have
received the Fortitude of the Holy Spirit.
Errors: those who betray and slander others.
5. Warning: The Devil will unleash against you, there will be 10 days of trial, that is 10 persecutions.
mainly. The ten also means that it is going to end soon.
6. Promise: remain faithful until death and I will give you the crown of life (the crown of martyrdom is
sufficient to gain eternal life). The victor has nothing to fear from the second death (the
hell).
It refers to the age of the illumination of the Church by the writings of the doctors in combating the
heresies. (includes the centuries IV to XIV).
2. Title of the Lord: the one who has the double-edged sword, that is, the word to penetrate minds and the
hearts and cut the lie and the sin nested there.
3. Achievements: you have faced the kingdom of satan, you have not renounced me during the time of the martyrs, you
you will defend my name (through the defense of the dogmas).
4. Errors: you tolerate those of Balaam which means you have allowed yourself to be penetrated by false customs that have come.
of the pagan world (of the Romans and Greeks). You tolerate the Nicolaitans, meaning that some have given in.
influenced by gnostic doctrines.
5. Warning: I will fight them with my truth.
6. Promise: the mysterious manna (the Eucharist) and a white stone with a new name (new
evangelizing conquests that led to the birth of new nations.
2
5TA- SARDES:3, 1-6: means beginning of beauty
Age of trials and purgation of the Church, purification and consolidation.
2. Titles of the Lord: he who has the 7 spirits of God, that is, the full measure of the Holy Spirit.
revival of faith, awakening of the Church, new preaching of the word, change of
conduct of Christians regarding conversion, purification of the Church in persecution, great Apostasy and
examples of holiness of many who have not soiled their white robes nor have been erased from the book of the
life.
4. Errors: works that lack perfection before the Lord, believing oneself to be alive when one is dead.
part of the Church that is content to do things without the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
5. Warnings: stay vigilant and strengthen yourself by holding onto what is good in you, remember what you have
learned, I will come to you like a thief of the night.
6. Promise: they will walk with me dressed in white, I will defend them before my Father and His angels,
It is the age of the New Jerusalem here on earth, the time of the flourishing of love and peace, the Kingdom
of the Holy Spirit.
2. Title of the Lord: the holy and true. He who has the key of the kingdom, who opens and no one can shut, and shuts
and no one can open (Satan will be chained and will not be able to leave).
3. Achievements: holiness will flourish, wisdom among humanity. It is the time of the definitive triumph of the
Church among the members who have kept their word and have not denied their name in the hour of testing.
There will still be conversions among the Jews (they will bow at your feet: they will do the same as you do) and they will
the riches of spiritual gifts will be poured out, all heresies and divisions will be defeated.
4. Warning: hold on to what you have so that no one takes your crown.
5. Errors: no errors are pointed out because God will always be visiting His people (the Emmanuel).
6. Promise: those who persevere will be like pillars in the temple of God and the names of God will be written.
in these and they will live in the New Jerusalem.
7MA-LAUDICEA: 3, 14-22:
It means muddy, that is, a town judged or tried for having separated from God.
It is the age of the final test of the Church as Satan is unleashed again for a brief period.
It is the time of the parousia or final judgment.
2. Titles of the Lord: The Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the works of God.
accumulated spiritual wealth.
4. Errors: believing that they need nothing, spiritual blindness and lukewarmness, attachment to material things.
5. Warning: do not be lukewarm or I will vomit you out of my mouth, seek Jesus (buy refined gold in the fire),
seek holiness (dress in white), seek truth (eye drops for your blindness). I correct and punish,
then seek to repent.
6. Promises: I stand at the door and knock; if you open, I will enter to dine with you. The one who emerges victorious will
I will let him sit with me on my throne as I sat on the throne of my Father.
Chapter 4. God, seated on his throne and surrounded by his court, receives the tributes that are paid to him.
VV. 1-3. Caught up to heaven, John sees an open door. The scene reproduces that one in which Stephen,
full of the Holy Spirit, saw heaven opened and the glory of God, and Jesus standing at his right hand (Acts 7:55).
The angel of the Apocalypse, standing next to the open door, orders him to ascend to heaven to behold in
vision of future events. Immediately the seer has the feeling of being transported
physically to the sky. Despite the invitation, it is not possible for him to enter, but only to look inside through the
open door. From there, he sees the throne room and the court of God. God is sitting on the throne. But he does not even
of their name, nor is His figure described. God, in fact, is invisible, and even the seraphim must cover themselves

Around the throne of God are arranged, also in the manner of thrones, twenty-four seats, and
sitting on them were twenty-four "Elders", dressed in white and with garlands or crowns of gold on their heads.

V. 5. The seer's gaze turns again to the divine throne, from which comes a great noise and incessant
lightning and thunder. The spectacle recalls the promulgation of the law at Sinai and the appearance of God
in Ezekiel 1:13. In the Old Testament, the storm accompanied by lightning and thunder is a symbol
the current of the power and majesty of God when He reveals Himself. Before the throne of God burn seven torches,
that are interpreted as symbols of the seven spirits of God. If these seven spirits symbolize the
Sevenfold Spirit of God, its representation in the form of torches means that nothing in the world
it escapes the gaze of the Lord.

the apostles (missionaries), the calf to the martyrs, the one with the face of a man to the doctors of the
Church and those similar to the eagle to the mystics.
VV. 8b-11. To conclude, Juan speaks of what constitutes the occupation of the divine court: to offer
unceasing homage to God. The seer even refers to the words with which such praises are

faithful of the earth. The prayers that the Elders offer to God have no relation to the needs
private individuals of the faithful, are a plea asking for the swift fulfillment of the mysterious designs of
God, written in the book.
VV. 9-10. It is said that their song is 'new'; which means that they have not performed it until now.

All creation to God and to the Lamb concludes the heavenly liturgy.

Then we see everyone praising God before the throne with their white garments after suffering the
martyrdom: "These are the ones who come from the great persecution; they have washed and made their robes white with the
Blood of the Lamb.” Verses 15, 16, and 17 present the comfort that these martyrs will have in heaven.
Chapter 8: The Seventh Seal and the first four trumpets. The transformation of the
creation.

has had in evangelizing through the centuries: The first trumpet and great hail and fire mixed with
blood: the coldness of the Jews towards the gospel (hail), persecution that these Jews inflict on the
Christians (fire and blood). The second trumpet and a huge mountain falls into the sea: the persecution of
the Romans to the Christians. The third trumpet and a star falls upon the waters of the rivers and
springs contaminating them: the assault against the truths of faith through heresies. The fourth
trumpet and the world is filled with darkness: it is the apostasy of the end times.
Chapter 9: It is a closer look at what happens during the apostasy of the end of the
times.
The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and to the star that had fallen from the sky to the earth (Satan) was given the key to the abyss.
from the abyss, and when it was opened, a smoke came out that darkened the sun and the air, and all the earth became infected with
locusts (demons). In verses 7 to 10, they are described as they were these locusts: They are beings
humans (face like that of human beings) that present a certain humanism as an attraction but are
moved by demons; they move with great determination to destroy faith (they resemble horses
paired for war), and they use political power (they wear a crown of gold on their heads).
Her hair is like that of a woman: this means that as an attraction they will have sensuality, the
effeminacy, the sexual sin. 'Teeth like those of lions': to devour all truth of faith using the
lie and slander. 'Iron armor': to resist the truth of the Gospel and obstinately

media. Tails like scorpions and stingers to torture: with poison to numb

Verse 4 says that he was ordered not to harm anything green: that is to say to those who live a life
intense spiritual. Verse 5 speaks of the time and the type of damage they will cause: spiritual. Verse 6 speaks
of what those who have been bitten by those locusts will feel when their consciences are illuminated:
They will want to die, but death will hide from them, for the end is to purify their souls with this suffering.

Vv 12-13: For Christians, it is the hour of perseverance. It urges us not to be afraid of death.
Well, the eternal prize will be immediate.

exterminated all who did evil upon the earth and who were outside of the faith (outside the city)
thus avenging the persecution that was made against the Church. (See Joel 2, 2 and 4,12)

Chapter 16: The Seven Bowls.
V 1: A strong voice from the Sanctuary: the voice of God himself.
V 2: The first cup produces a malignant and pernicious ulcer: Matovelle says: "a true ulcer,"
cruel to an extreme and extremely tenacious, that will be like a button of devouring fire applied constantly to
the meats, like a mark of hell, for which no remedy can cure; which will bring about rage and
desperation to the wicked.” (Cited book page 545).
The second cup turns the sea into blood like that of a dead person: that is to say that it "corrupts itself to
instant and turns into an immense receptacle of filthy, dirty, and pestilent blood.
"prodrida de muertos" (Cited book page 547). The consequence of this is the death of every living being in the
famine and epidemics spreading across the globe.
Vv 4-7: The third cup is poured out, turning rivers and springs into blood. The angel who poured it out

He comes soon and commands the faithful to keep the grace so that he does not find us naked.
Vv 17-21: The seventh angel pours out his bowl and a tremendous cataclysm occurs: the destruction of all
evil, of all human work and the restoration of creation to its original condition. (See Rom 8:19-22 and
