Tutorial Sheet # 2 (Kinematics of Particle)

1. A missile is fired vertically such that its altitude is defined by m, where

t is measured in seconds. Determine the missile’s position, velocity, and acceleration when
sec. Ans: 133.75m, 64.25 m/s, 21m/s2.

2. The acceleration of a particle is defined by where a is in m/s2 and x is in meters.

Knowing m/s when , determine the velocity when m for (a) , (b)
and (c) . Ans: 15.0, 14.74, 15.25 m/s
3. As a body is projected to a high altitude above the earth’s surface, neglecting air resistance, the
acceleration is determined from the formula: , where m/s2 at
mean sea level and km is the mean radius of earth. Determine the minimum initial
velocity at which a projectile should be shot vertically from the earth’s surface, so that it does not
fall back on earth ( ). Ans:
4. The acceleration of a particle is given by , where a is in m/s2 and V is in m/s. If the
initial velocity of the particle is 15m/s at , determine (a) the position where m/s, (b)
the velocity of the particle at m. Ans: 6.73m, 4.64m/s.
5. The flight path of a jet aircraft when it takes off from airport is defined by the parametric
equations: and , where t is the time after take-off, in seconds, and x and y in
meters. If the plane starts to level off at s, determine at this instant: (a) the horizontal
distance of the plane from the airport, (b) its altitude, (c) its speed and (d) its acceleration.
Ans: 2 km, 1.92 km, 175.32 m/s,
7.62 m/s2.
6. The plane is flying horizontally with a constant speed of 60m/s at an altitude of 900 m. If the
pilot drops a package with the same horizontal speed, determine the angle at which he must
sight target B so that when the package is released it strikes B. Neglect air resistance. Explain
why the package appears to remain directly beneath the plane as it falls. Ans: .

7. A fighter plane is directly over an aircraft gun at time . The plane has a speed V1 of 500
km/hr along the same direction. A shell is fired at in an attempt to hit the plane. If the
muzzle velocity V0 is 1000 m/s, how many meters d should the gun
be aimed ahead of the plane to hit it? What is the time of impact?
Ans: 280m, 2.04 s
8. Particles A and B are confined to always be in circular groove of
radius 1.5 m. At the same time, these particles must also be in a
slot that has the shape of a parabola, . The slot is shown
dashed at time . If the slot moves to the right at a constant
speed of 1m/s, what are the speed and rate of change of speed of particles towards each other at
second. Ans: 1.2 m/s, 1.196 m/s2.

9. A pin is connected to slide in a circular slot of radius

6m. The pin also slide in a straight slot which moves to
the right at a constant speed 3 m/s while maintaining a
constant angle of 30o with the horizontal. What are the
velocity and acceleration of the pin A at the instant
shown? Ans: 0.75i – 1.3j m/s, -0.325i -0.188j m/s2.

10. A particle P moves with speed V along the curve m. At what position x does the
particle have the maximum acceleration? What is the value of this acceleration if m/s?
Ans: 26m, 0.0385
m/s2.
11. A fighter plane is in a diving maneuver along a trajectory that is
approximately a parabola. If the maximum number of g’s that the
pilot can withstand is 5 g’s from the shoulder to head from the
dynamics of the plane, what is the maximum allowable speed for this
maneuver when the plane reaches A? Ans: 891 km/hr.

12. A passenger plane is moving at a constant speed of 200 km/hr in a

holding pattern at a constant elevation. At the instant of interest,
the angle between the velocity vector and x-axis is 30 o. The
vector is known through on-board gyroscopic instrumentation to be
changing at the rate of -5 o/s. What is the radius of curvature of
the point at this instant? Ans: 637m.

13. A wheel of diameter 0.6m is rotated at a speed of 2 rad/s and is

increasing its rotational speed at the rate of 3 rad/s 2. It advances along a
screw having a pitch of 12.5 mm. What is the acceleration of the
elements on the rim in terms of cylindrical components?
Ans: m/s2.
14. The rotation of rod OA about O is defined by
where is in radians and t in seconds.
Collar B slides along the rod in such a way that its distance
from O is , r being in meters. When s,

to the rod. Ans: 1.12 m/s 10.3 o clockwise with +x axis,
6.67 m/s 72.2 o, -2.9 m/s2 90 o.
15. A variable diameter drum is rotated by a motor at a constant
speed of 10 rpm. A rope of diameter d of 12 mm wraps
around this drum and pulls up a weight W. It is desired that
the velocity of the weight’s upward movement be given as
