041 BASIC MATHEMATICS


Time: 3 Hours Tuesday, 25 March 2025.
Instructions
1. This paper consists of sections A and B with a total of fourteen (14) questions.
2. Answer all questions.
3. Each question in section A carries six (06) marks while each question in section B carries
ten (10) marks.
4. All necessary working and answers for each question must be shown clearly.
5. All writings must in blue or black ink except drawings which must be in pencil.
6. NECTA mathematical tables, and non-programmable calculators may be used.
7. Communication devices and any unauthorised materials are not allowed in the examination
room.
8. Write your Examination number on every page of your answer booklet(s)

SECTION A (60 Marks)
Answer all questions in this section.

1. (a) Three wooden rods of lengths 168cm, 72cm and 90cm are cut into pieces of the same
lengths. Find the greatest possible length for those pieces of rods if no wooden rod is
left without cut.

(b) Without using tables or calculator, evaluate 0.68 𝑥 0.095 , giving your answer in standard
form

2. (a) Find the value of x in the equation 4+ 3𝑙𝑜𝑔3 𝑥 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 24

(b) Find the value of 2𝑡 = 1

3. In a certain school, 40 students were asked about whether they like Tennis or Football or
both. It was found that the number of students who like both Tennis and Football was
three times the number of student who like Tennis only. Furthermore, the number of
students who like Football only was six more than twice the number of students who like
Tennis only. However, 4 students like neither Tennis nor Football.
(a) Represent this information in a Venn diagram

(b) Use the results obtained from part (a) above to determine the number of students who
like both Football and Tennis.

4. (a) Find the equation of a line passes through the point of intersection of the lines 3x – 2y
-8 =0 and 2x +y = 3 and is perpendicular to the line 4x +3y =0

(b) The points P, Q and R have coordinates (5, -3), (-6,1) and (1,8) respectively. Show
that PQR is an isosceles triangle.

5. (a) Calculate the area of a square with the diagonals of length 8.8cm.

(b) From the rectangle JKLM given below,

6. (a) Nine workers work 8 hours a day to complete a piece of work in 52 days. How long
will it take 13 workers to complete the same job by working 6 hours a day?

(b) Suppose the current rate of exchange between the Tanzanian shillings and the Euros
2650 Tshs per Euro. A tourist changes 200 Euros to Tanzanian shillings. How much
does he get?

7. (a) Given that A: B =3:4 and B:C = 8:9, find A:C

(b) The following information relates to Ms Johari, a trader as at 30th May 2022.
Sales Shs 340 000
Cost of sales 75% of sales
Opening stock Shs 90 000
Net profit 20% of sales
Closing stock 20% of sales
Calculate;
(i) Purchases
(ii) Cost of sales
(iii) Closing stock
(iv) Expenses

8. (a) Find the sum of the first ten terms of the series 9 +27 + 81+ ……………

(b) The first level of one wall of pyramid is made up of 497 bricks where as the top has 2
bricks. If the levels differ from each other by 5 bricks. Determine the number of
(i) Levels of the bricks
(ii) All bricks used to make the wall

ages will be 160 years. Formulate a quadratic equation representing this information and
hence find their present ages.

11. The following is a recorded of daily temperature in (0C) for one month in a certain town
in East Africa.

(a) Prepare the frequency distribution table of a class size 5 beginning with the 25
taking into consideration

(b) Calculate the mean using assumed mean from the class mark of the modal class in

12. (a) Calculate the distance between Tanga (500 𝑁, 120 E) and Arusha (500 𝑁, 260 E) in
nautical miles correct to three decimal places

13. (a) Find the image of the point P(2,3) after a reflection in the line x= -1, followed by

14. (a) If f(x) = 𝑥 2 – 4 , determine
(i) Domain and range
(ii) 𝑓 −1 (x)

(b) Calculate the x and y intercepts of y = 𝑥 2 – 4x +3

(c) Draw a graph of the relation R = {(𝑥, 𝑦): 𝑦 > −2𝑥 + 1} and from the graph state its
domain and range.
