1
I. LOCATION
The Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR) is located at Dimapur, Nagaland, a vibrant
hill state located in the extreme north - eastern part of India.

ABOUT DIMAPUR
Dimapur is the main commercial city for the region. It is the only city in Nagaland which is connected by
road, rail and air. There are direct trains to and from New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Trivandrum
and Guwahati. There are also daily flights to and from Kolkata and Guwahati.

1
II. ABOUT CIHSR
CIHSR is the culmination of a possible solution for the great need of health in the region. It was established
with a tripartite partnership of Christian Medical College Vellore, Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA)
and the State of Nagaland. The Chief Secretary of the state is the chairperson of the CIHSR society and
the Executive Director of EHA is the Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Each of these three organizations comprise the Governing body which facilitates the establishment
and growth of the institution that aims at creating a holistic health destination that in turn will take
responsibility for reaching out to the furthest most parts of the region and impact health in Northeast
India.

CMC Vellore contributes significantly by way of training opportunities, regular visits by consultants,
information transfer and advice. EHA provides the sponsorship avenue for CIHSR staff and students to
study at CMC Vellore and Ludhiana. Through its wide network of hospitals and friends, it plays a vital
role in guiding and facilitating the institution’s growth.

The 130 acres’ land on which the institution stands is on a 30 year lease from the Government of
Nagaland. It is situated about 6 kms on the outskirts of Dimapur in Nagaland.

In its 16 years of existence, we have established a high level secondary health Center with a college
of nursing, several courses in Allied Health Sciences, postgraduate DNB courses in Family Medicine,
General Surgery, General Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Anaesthesiology. CIHSR
also runs health-training courses for lay leaders and serves as a center for postgraduate diploma in
family medicine (PGDFM), a distance education unit of CMC Vellore.

We run a programme for helping Children with special needs with a developmental Paediatrics unit and
the Precious Gems School.

The Radiotherapy department with state-of-the-art equipment was established in 2018. The Cardiology
department is the latest addition to the super specialty service at CIHSR and is the only hospital in the
state of Nagaland to have a High-End Cath lab facility.

The process of setting up of the Regional Institute for Allied Health sciences with the MOU DONER
ministry is nearing completion and the required infrastructure development is already complete.
We continue to develop partnerships and network with likeminded organizations who are interested in
the health of the region.

Eventually, we aspire to start a Medical college that will train and develop a large number of individuals
who will take responsibility for the health of the region.

IV. REGIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES

On 20th September 2010, an MOU was signed between the North Eastern Council, the Government of
Nagaland and CIHSR to set up the Regional Institute of Allied Health Sciences at Dimapur, Nagaland,
with a view to train Allied Health Professionals from Nagaland and the rest of the North Eastern states.
Of the 12 planned courses, five courses, i.e., Diploma in Radiodiagnosis Technology (DRT), Diploma
in Medical Records Technology (DMRT), Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT), Diploma
in Optometry and Ophthalmic Technology (DOOT) and Diploma in Anesthesia Technology (DAT) were
started in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015. These courses are affiliated to the Christian Medical Association
of India (CMAI). The CMAI is the pioneer for Allied Health Sciences training in India and their graduates
are well placed in various parts of the world. However, 3 diploma courses DMRT, DAT & DMLT have been
discontinued from academic session 2020-21 since B.Sc. degree programs have been approved by the
Nagaland University for these 3 courses. Now we are running 3 bachelor courses affiliated to Nagaland
University in B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT), B.Sc. Health Information Management
(BHIM) and B.Sc. Anesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology (BAOTT). In addition, from this academic
year, Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (BPT), Bachelor of Science in Radiotherapy Technology (BSc.
RTT), Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Technology (B.Sc MIT) and Bachelor of Science in Dialysis
Technology will be started subject to approval by the Nagaland University

providing effective and correct treatment for the patients. About 70% of all medical decisions are based
on laboratory reports for which having a well-trained professional in a good laboratory setup is of utmost
importance.
A Medical Laboratory Technologist will be required to work with a number of automated analyzers and
manual techniques, which require high level of skills and expertise. They will also be involved in medical
microbiological work to identify disease causing bacteria, active surveillances for infection control, etc.
