Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

Introduction
The proposed business idea revolves around selling pre-loved formal and wedding clothes online
initially through Facebook and Instagram page and later developing a website to sell the products. The
aim of this business is to provide people with sustainable fashion choices that can be utilized multiple
times making the money spent on them worth it. This business type is still not popular in the local
market, despite having huge potential since people spend substantial amounts on wedding dresses and
do not reuse them on many occasions.

Our business venture will serve as an intermediary between buyers and sellers and will provide them
with a trusted platform where they can sell or rent out their used clothes and earn money off them while
sitting at home. Similarly, it will create ease for the buyers who do not want to spend heavy amount on
clothes to be worn in weddings as they will be able to shop or rent from a wide range of affordable
menu. The brand will deal in both male and female formal and wedding attires.

The brand aims to utilize famous social media platforms as mentioned above to offer convenient and fast
service without having the need for customers to visit a physical store. These channels will also serve as
a source to communicate with the customers and provide assistance to them whenever required. Through
paid marketing promotions, the brand can ensure that it reaches the right set of consumers who show
similar interests and buying behavior. One more reason to prefer online channels is people’s inclination
towards it and the surge of Covid-19 pandemic.

The reason why our team intended to start this business is to encourage sustainable practices in the
society which are lacking due to various misconceptions. We hope that through this venture we are able
to create meaningful change in society and are able to reduce apparel wastage in the country.

Ejaar aims to practice responsible production and consumption by making the best use of formal and
bridal wears which people do not wear more than twice or thrice and then they become a waste for them.
The brand also aims to reduce inequalities through introducing a platform on which customers can
easily buy expensive bridal and formal dresses on a much lower price which will result in increased
affordability. 5

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

Problem Statement
The formal and bridal dresses are very costly and are rarely repeated on multiple occasions. Hence, it
increases unnecessary consumer expenses and results in clothing wastage, thus adding to environmental
issues. Some prevailing reasons for this problem are as follows:

1. Unavailability of Platforms
There are not many platforms in Pakistan that are offering the facility of buying and selling used
clothes which are affordable and easily accessible. There are very few avenues that provide such
a facility but their awareness among consumers is limited to none. Therefore, consumers are
always on the lookout for clothes that are within their budget. In these circumstances, the best
solution is to offer them a fast and convenient facility with no compromise on quality.

2. High Price of Formal & Bridal Dresses

Good quality formal and bridal dresses in Pakistan are sold at high prices, making it difficult for
the consumers to find clothes that are of good quality and design and fit in their budget.
Therefore, there must be a solution that may provide these consumers to temporarily avail
dresses from a wide variety of affordable prices. The customers can return the dresses once they
have used them.

3. Trust Issues
There are trust issues among customers regarding used clothes but through our platform these
issues can be effectively addressed by ensuring clothes are properly cleaned before handing over
to the customer by involving a professional dry cleaning facilities. Customers will also be made
well aware of the procedures involved in cleaning of the clothes. Trust issues can also arise from
delivery services, but by having an internal delivery-man on brand’s payroll; it will be ensured
that customers do not face delivery related issues and their desired articles are delivered quickly
at their doorstep

Customer Profiling

The group members have gathered following responses from women and men of different age groups
and occupations to gauge their inclination towards the idea of pre-loved clothing.

Following are the collected responses:

1. Amna Anees

Customer Job: Housewife and mother of two children.

Pains: She always had to make new clothes for the events which cost her too much and she felt that
they were worn only twice or thrice maximum because she didn’t prefer wearing same dress again
and again due to fashion trends. She was facing money wastage problem on such heavy clothes.
Another problem was that she was reluctant to rent them out because of damages and color fading.
She also believed that rented clothes are of bad quality and doesn’t seem up to the trends. They are
even not reasonable according to her.

Gains: She thought that by renting such clothes she will have money and she was also ready for
selling such clothes to us because she wanted to make new trendy clothes by money earned through
renting or selling the old ones. She also thought that this idea will save her time in buying new ones
and will definitely rent out clothes if they will be reasonable enough.

Discussion: She was ready to rent out clothes for the sake of money she would earn over them
because they were useless after wearing for two to three times. She even showed interest in taking
clothes on rent from us if they were reasonable enough for her. According to her reasonable price
would be half or below the original price.

2. Shafaq Shafiq

Customer Job: Manager Investments at UBL, daughter.

Pains: She did not liked going in weddings too much because of her busy routine and she always felt
like the heavy dresses she made for her wedding were not being utilized because she did not attend
too many weddings or functions. She also had the fear of taking clothes on rent because she believed
that it was impossible for her to wear clothes worn by someone else .She was very conscious about
hygiene and cleanliness. She also mentioned the COVID impact that it was not possible for her to
wear clothes of someone else because of COVID.
7

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

Gains: She believed that this will save cost for many women because it will not charge hefty
amounts for formal dresses to be worn once. She was also ready to rent out clothes from us under the
condition that the clothes she will rent must be new and were not worn by anyone before.

Discussion: She was ready to rent out clothes from us if they were brand new and I ensured her that
we will be putting new clothes variety on rent as well as soon we will start our business and reach
certain margins. She was also ready to sell out clothes to us which were not utilized as many times as
she wanted to.

3. Zahiya Waseem

Customer Job: School teacher and MBA Student

Pains: She believed that such clothing brands don’t offer numerous varieties of clothes and are not
according to their size and fittings. She also had a problem of stitching formal clothes because
according to her formal pret wear cost her a lot of money for only one use. She is not a shopaholic
person so it was difficult for her to get a good fabric and get stitched for weddings.

Gains: She was happy with the idea that it will save a lot of time of hers in searching for cloth fabric
to get it stitched. She was ready to get rent out clothes if they were of her own choice and fitting.

Discussion: She was ready to rent out clothes from us when I ensured her that we will be adding
numerous varieties and sizes alterations can also be made by our team when we will gain popularity.
She was excited about this idea and was also willing to recommend it to her social circle as well. She
even suggested that we should add men variety as well on rent and sale.

4. Adina Rahman

Customer Job: Student, Associate Manager at Telenor Micro finance Bank

Pains: She hardly made formal dresses for weddings and was ready to wear them as many times as
she can. Secondly she believed that her own wedding dress would be the legacy that will be
transferred to her children for which she will never rent or sell out her own wedding dress. And she
also had pressure from her mother for not doing so.

Gains: She thinks that this idea was very effective as she already knew about it from her friends.
She was also ready to rent her other formal dresses for the sake of money.

Discussion: She did not make new clothes for every wedding except for her own brother’s wedding.
Despite of all this, she was looking forward to this business concept because in her social circle, her
friends used to take clothes on rent and shared positive reviews with her.

5. Noor ul Ain

Customer Job: Primary School Teacher

8

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

Pain: She said that she has a hygienic issue that most of the women have no sense to carry the
dresses in a proper way. She is not happy to rent her dresses because she personally doesn’t like to
rent her dress. On the other side she would never buy on rent because she used to repeat her dresses
in different occasions.

Gain: She said that it is good idea and very helpful to those especially who lower class are or have
low salary. She willing to sell and buy dresses that are one time used (second hand). She said that
she loves to buy 2nd hand both formal and bridal dresses if they are in good quality.

Discussion: She said that she faces issues regarding prices and fabric. She visits different markets to
buy affordable dresses and still sometime the fabric is not good. If she gets the chance to buy good
fabric and quality dresses at lower prices, then she definitely grabs this opportunity.

6. Hafsa

Customer Job: Housewife and mother of 1 child

Pain: She said that she has trust issue because you don’t know the other person is saying truth or
not. She was confused also because she had never heard this idea before and said that how she would
buy 2nd hand dress from unknown person because she always used to buy new dress from particular
shops.

Gain: Except the trust issue she was ready to buy and sell her dresses on rent. She said that it is a
unique idea because she has also some dresses that she used one time then it’s going to wasted. She
said that it is some kind source of income in which u can cover your expenses. She was ready to rent
and also buy/sell used dresses but the other person should be trustworthy and offer quality.

Discussion: In the beginning she was nervous because she has no idea about it. But after clarifying
her issues her willing to rent dresses. She said that she facing some money issues due to Covid and if
she earns from its available resources then she definitely does. she had trust issue when I ask her to
buy but she said that initially she sell then if you work in proper manner like hygienic and quality
wise the she also love to buy dresses on rent not only new but also used one.

7. Samia

Customer Job: She works in EFU Insurance Company

Pain: She said that I have attachment with some dresses and if she gives on rent so may be other
person can spoil her favorite dress. She also not used to buy party dresses and love new formal
dresses. Another issue is the hygienic one because the dresses are not properly clean so it is difficult
to buy 2nd hand dresses.

Gain: She said that it is a good idea and very useful when you are in emergency. Because sometimes
the gathering is so important that you have to attend that and cannot repeat the same dress. So if she
9

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

finds any dresses according to her taste then she definitely buys on rent for few hours. She said that
she will also rent those dresses that she has not any source of attachment.

Discussion: She told that her family had two or three marriages at a same time in which she had to
buy many dresses because she could not repeat the same dresses in her same family weddings. At
that time if she got such rental opportunity then she would have definitely opted for it because she
spent too much. She also told me that one of her friend who was bride rented her bridal dresses
because at the same time someone else was getting married, the functions were ahead of both. She
suggested me that you can work with boutique also and can rent their new dresses by giving them
some margin. This will help you to offer not only 2nd hand dresses but new dresses also.

8. Saira

Customer Job: Housewife and mother of two children.

Pain: She said that she has issue of hygiene that whether the dress is well clean or not. During the
Covid situation it is difficult to rent the used dress. Another problem is that family members are
reluctant for renting the used dress because of hygiene factor. She has fear of damage also as she
said that if I buy on rent and due to any condition it damage then she have no idea that what will be
the consequences she can bear. May be she cannot afford damage price so it may difficult for her to
buy on rent.

Gain: Except of some issues she is really willing to buy and sell the dress on rent. She said that if I
get the dress at low price but with beautiful designs and quality then I’ll definitely utilize this
opportunity. It is a good source of income and she is ready to buy and sell without any trust issue.
She said that cleaning is very important element in this type of business so if you offered clean and
quality wise dress then she will buy and sell the dresses.

Discussion: During the discussion she shared that in her family most of the ladies do not repeat the
dresses on wedding or sometime make fun of it. We mostly avoid to repeat the same dresses on
wedding. Few years ago she had 6 days’ functions and it was very costly to buy 6 dresses for each
day. Therefore, if she gets rental opportunity then she definitely does this. She also said that she had
no trust issue that if you keep your margin high on rental dress because it is the part of business.

9. Fatima Hasan

Customer’s jobs: Teacher, Sister, Housewife and Mother of 2 Children,

Gain: This type of idea would be helpful for people who cannot afford expensive dresses either
fancy dresses or formal dresses. People will have a variety of dresses to choose and according to the
event or functions. It is easy to take on rent if any event comes at the eleventh hour. She also agreed
to rent out her own dresses which she used once or twice, but she will not wear rented dress.
10

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

Pain: She was concerned about hygienic issues, she said how will I get to know that dress I would
choose to take on rent either is it washed properly or not?? Customer who has been used that dress
previously she may have skin disease or any health issues.

Discussion: I shared idea with her which was appreciated. I explained about category of dresses we
will have and how we will rent out dresses she concerned about neatness and washing issue. I
explained that dress would be washed properly and sanitized before rented to another customer or if
client wants her dress back so we can return to her. She also suggested us to offer kids’ clothes for
(6-12 age) for school going girls as they participate in school events and want new dress so we can
take on rent for 1-2 hour rather than buy new one for 1 event then it would be useless.
10. Nuzhat Khan

Customer’s Job: Coordinator, Daughter, and Mother of 1 daughter

Gain: I will appreciate this platform for the reason that would be economical for people rather than
buy costly dresses for 1 or 2 hour event or gathering. Mothers can get rent out your clothes for their
daughters on urgent basis, usually people to go the market and select the unstitched clothe and
matching stuff and makes it stitched which takes a lot of time and cost. I would like to rent out my
dresses which I have worn once or twice to you and want to get money or commission if it would be
fair.

Pain: I do not prefer to wear rent out dresses for myself, or for my daughter I generally wear
branded dresses or new local dresses. She said what if you don’t give me commission on my rent out
dress fairly, it is possible you may rent out my dresses 15 times but you have mentioned my dress
chartered 10 times, how will you prove me? Trust issues.

Discussion: She was concerned regarding commission would be fair. I cleared her query whenever
her dress will be rent out she will be informed through message or any alternative we will install for
convey information to client and update him/her. I gave example also, whatever the price of dress
would be, she will get 25% of price. As dress price is 2200/- she will get 550 Rs, on each order of
her dress.

11. Kinza Shah Nawaz

Customer’s Job: Sister, Daughter and Working Professional

Gain: She mentioned it would be less expensive than purchasing new clothes every time, this would
be helpful for those who belong to lower middle class or middle class families. People will have
more options and variety to choose dresses according to their wish in affordable prices.

Pain: Generally people have size issues just like her, she said, people have large size or extra-large
size, how will they take clothes on rent, Sizes should be available with wide range of clothes, she
also mentioned what if I do not get my dress on time as you know we may face any unforeseen
situation in the city of Karachi.
11

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

Discussion: She was concerned about sizes then I explained her as we are starting our new business
as our business will grow, we will have wide range of dresses and sizes as well. As far as concerned
about delivery I cleared that’s why we will take order 1 day before.

12. Tooba Hasan

Customer Job: College Student, Daughter and Sister

Gain: She heard first time about rented dresses and quite happy. She said it would be easy for girls
who do not work and dependent on their parents or they are college students so they can take dress
on rent on special occasion or event if dresses are affordable in price of 1500-2000.

Pain: She was concerned about quality she mentioned normally used clothes have low quality and
don’t look good. Quality should be better. She had a thought dressed will be washed or not.

Discussion: I did explained her about rental dresses and how will customer take dress on rent and
give on rent as we are going to provide platform where variety of dresses will be offered. I assured
her quality would be better and we will have those dresses which are used once or twice only.
Regarding washing and cleaning we will have proper cleaning and washing system before chartered
dress to any customer.

13. Tazeen

Customer Job: Housewife and Mother of 2 children.

rent two year before, but that dress was damage little bit after that she had to pay double price.

Gain: According to her purchase dress on rent will be time saving and money saving process in this
way a lot of money people can save.

Discussion: She will purchase only heavy dresses for different occasions from us but firstly they
will see dresses design and then decide to buy. If she thinks that it meets her standard of dressing and
the quality and variety of dresses will be according to her taste, then she will definitely rent out our
clothes. But she will not provide us dress for rent.

14. Sher Muhammad

Customer Job: School Teacher, 3 siblings and Unmarried.

spending on other things. In weddings there will be a lot of other expenses so this method is money
saving method.

prosper in future as well. He will not be ready to give his dress on rent.

different occasions otherwise to wear dresses with variation will be expensive.

occasions. She was conscious about her dresses a lot mainly about the fabric. She was afraid of
renting out because of damage issues.

budget friendly and also it is time saving method in the busy schedule.

Discussion: She will try our clothes and will purchase if we provide in reasonable cost. She want to
purchase other dresses but not wedding dress. She may also provide us dress on rent because
according to her this business is a great initiative and she want to look over it in real as well.

17. Adeel Ahmed

which discourage him is to compensation while occur in dress.

things, and it will be time and energy saving method also.

Discussion: He will purchase dress for siblings wedding from us, but he check size and designs, if

happier because getting what you want is a relief.

as she can utilize her dress in her close relatives wedding. She doesn’t like to buy and sell because
she prefers readymade new dresses and reluctant to wear used one.

Gain: She said it is good idea but personally she does not prefer this. If someone is needy and like
her dress, then she gives it free but on rent is not preferable.

Discussion: She did not like to talk too much and not ready to sell and buy on rent. She was not
discussed too much and simply said that she doesn’t like to do such type of activities. She was very
conscious about the hygiene and quality of her own dresses and very particular about its fabric

20. Ahsanat
14

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

Customer Job: HR executive

Pain: She said that hygiene is a big issue and mostly people have no sense to use the dress in a
proper manner. It’s sometime difficult to wear used clothes. On the other hand, I buy expensive
clothes and I like it very much so I really don’t want to give on rent because some precious
memories are attached with these clothes.

Gain: She was fine to buy on rent but it should be completely purified and washed. She said that if
dresses are in good condition then she would love to buy on rent as it saves money.

Discussion: I gave her both situations that either she buys or sell on rent or she do both so she said
that she is ready to buy but not give for rent because she loves her dresses and if she buys expensive
one so she will keep for herself.

21. Shahtaj

Customer Job: Finance Manager

Pain: She said that during the Covid situation it is difficult to buy use dresses as because don’t know
that other person has any disease or not. On the other hand, unhygienic condition is also a problem
because sometimes it may not have washed properly so it is unsafe to use.

Gain: She said that if she keeps Covid aside then it is a good trend as she can save something. She
was also ready to give her dresses on rent but only those which she does not wear again. Otherwise
she is fine to buy and sell on rent.

Discussion: She was agreed somehow but put the conditions. If we solve her hygienic issue and
built some trust because according to her knowledge rented clothes were not of good quality and
condition. If we acknowledge all these things then she definitely agrees for both the situations.

22. Samin

Customer Job: Teacher

Pain: He said that men’s formal dresses are not too expensive that we need to buy on rent while
groom’s dress and turban are little bit expensive. But mostly wedding day comes only one time a life
so it’s better to spend some money on it rather to wear use item or rent it.

Gain: He said that he would like to give his dress on rent if someone likes to wear it. But I give
those dresses which are no longer in my use or become old fashion or do not fit with my size.

Discussion: In a small discussion I concluded that he has not any interest with this renting activity.
Rarely does he give his clothes on rent but most probably he is not like to do rent. So in short his
answer was completely no.

23. Ansha

Customer Job: Trainee in HR

Pain: She said that before renting I would completely check the policies and term condition because
there is problem of hygiene and fitting in both situations. Mostly people do not washed dress
properly so it is unsafe to wear use dresses. Fitting is another problem as if it is not according to my
size so there is no use of it. On the other hand, if I give on rent so also some people do stitching by
them and ruin the dress.

Gain: She was ready to buy or sell on rent but when her problem will be solved. She said that it is
really helpful for the urgent basis or when we have different functions at a same time.

Discussion: Just like other she also put some conditions before buying and selling on rent. I believe
that if we solve her problems then she prefers to rent out the dresses.
24. Dua

Customer Job: Student

Pain: She said that she visited somewhere but she didn’t found attractive because dresses were too
old fashioned or may be used too many times. Other perspective she shared that this renting system
is not common in Pakistan so it makes her reluctant to buy.

Gain: She said that this idea makes u able to save money and wear different dresses in every
function because we girls do not like to repeat the same dress. So it is really helpful to enjoy new
dresses every time.

Discussion: I think that she has only one issue that dresses were not attractive. If we offer her
beautiful dress with multiple designs so might be she ready to buy. While she was fine to give her
dress on rent without having any issue regarding damages or fitting.

25. Samra
Customer Job: Banker and single woman.

Pain: She has many formal clothes that she does not wear anymore. Therefore, she would like to sell
out those clothes to people who might need them. However, the idea of renting out dresses did not
appeal her as she did not seem comfortable with it.

Gain: She was excited to know about a portal that offers a facility where people would be willing to
buy/rent out clothes. Using this platform, she would be able to sell her clothes conveniently. She
would like to use the platform for selling her old/used clothes to gain some extra money and avoid
wastage.

Discussion: Miss Samra was excited about this facility but she was concerned about using it for
buying clothes for herself as she will be comfortable wearing someone else’s clothes. However, she
found this idea very appealing in terms of selling her clothes out.

26. Mariam
Customer Job: Ph.D. Student and married with a daughter.

Pain: Ms. Mariam faces similar issues as Ms. Samra. She explained her issues of having multiple
clothes lying idle in her closet, but she does not wear them frequently. The dresses cost a
considerable amount that refrains her from buying formal clothes as much as possible and thus miss
out on new designs and styles.

Gain: The opportunity of renting/selling used clothes online seemed like a good idea to her. She was
open to selling her used clothes which she did not intend to use anymore.

someone but she had not come across a platform to do so. She found it difficult to find people to
who she could sell her clothes off.

27. Alifia

Customer Job: Banker and single woman.

Pain: Ms. Alifyah is very much concerned about hygiene issues and especially due to Covid-19; she
would not be willing to use someone else’s clothes even if she is getting them for a cheap amount.
She thinks such dresses might be a carrier to germs and viruses and she would not be willing to
consider the idea of buying or renting out used clothes.

Gain: She can use the service in case she ever thinks about selling out her own clothes so there is a
possible future usage involved.

Discussion: She resists spending too much on formal occasional clothes as she thinks it’s a waste of
money. Since she is concerned about hygiene, therefore she only trusts her close friends and can use
their clothes after having them dry cleaned and she even gets them dry cleaned before returning. She
discussed the usage possibility of this platform by masses if proper cleaning and hygiene standards
are followed and customers are assured that they clothes are well taken care of.

28. Faiza

17

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

events. Therefore she has a limited number of formal clothes. She would not prefer wearing
someone’s clothes other than her own family.

Gain: She said this platform can provide opportunities to many people who have budget constraints
and require more clothes in order to meet their societal needs.

Discussion: Being a medical student, Ms. Faiza is not fond of attending social events and hence does
not feel the need to invest much in her clothing. She would also not be interested in buying/renting
out dresses from strangers as she is concerned about it.

and due to alter suit many times it loses its worth.

Gains: Furthermore, he said that rent out clothes will provide us benefits also we can wear different
clothes for different events, and it will require less amount of money so everyone can purchase it for
their events.

Discussion: He is not interested in wear rent out dresses for their family events although he will
purchase official dresses for official events. As we talk about our business, he is ready to purchase
official dresses from us on rent, but he check our cost and compare it with market cost.

repeatedly, it prevents wastage of clothes because if we purchase so many dresses which we will not
be wear in future so it will waste.

Discussion: She will purchase wedding dress as well as other fancy dresses from us on rent, but she
will check four factors which are size, variety, price and hygiene she will also provide us their
dresses on rent because she thinks that heavy dresses which she do not use again and again so it will

2. Customer Segmentation
Customer Segments is the significant element of the Business Model Canvas. No organization will
survive without customers. If there are no customers who purchases a product, then there is no reason to
be in the market because no one is buy from you. You must make segmentation because it defines that
why it is made and for what purpose. Your audience defines your product because not everything is for
everyone so if you do not target the real audience of your product, you cannot make sales and stand in
the competition world. The reason is that your real audience is unknown and you cannot reach them
correctly.
To address the issues and interests of the customers, it is significant that the organization or association
have the option to section them into groups with same interest. Those segments must share same
objectives and interests, sort of similar practices and needs, and a comparable financial and social
profile. This makes it simpler for the organization to picture and arrive at each sort of crowd.
