Module 1 Activity Ethics

Activity 1: “Gear-up” Activity

Instructions: Recall/ review all the rules you must follow at home, at the church, in
the community, and Pangasinan State University. Consider the following study
questions after recalling the rules:

1. Among the rules (i.e., rules at home, in the community, in PSU), which rule do
you find constricting?
Rules at home are to show respect and kindness.
In the community, keep pets under control.
In PSU, attend and participate in the event and attendance is a must.

2. What do you think are the reasons behind these rules?

At Home: The rule about showing respect and kindness is likely in place
to develop a positive and supportive family environment, where everyone
feels valued and appreciated.

In the Community: The rule that is all about keeping the pets under
control is probably intended to maintain public health and safety, prevent
damage to property, and ensure that pets don't become a trouble and pest
to others.

In PSU: The rule about attending and participating in events in the

institution and having an active attendance is designed to promote
academic engagement and encourage students to take their studies
seriously and take the opportunity to join. Also, it helps students develop
their important skills and habits in different ways.

3. What would your home be without these rules? Your community? PSU?
At Home: Without the rule about respect and kindness, the home might
become a stressful and unpleasant place to be, with family members
feeling unheard, unvalued, or even hurting each other.

In the Community: Without the rule about keeping pets under control, the
community might experience problems with pet waste, noise, pests, and
property damage, which could lead to conflicts between pet owners and
non-pet owners, also in the motorists who travel and others.

In PSU: Without rules about attending and participating, students miss

out on learning opportunities after graduation.
Activity 2: Reading and Self-Reflection

Instructions: Read the reading materials entitled “Moral and Non-Moral Standards”
and “Moral Dilemmas” by
www.philonotes.com.https://philonotes.com/2022/05/moral-standard-versus-
non-moral-standard#google_vignette Consider the following reflection questions
after reading:
 Differentiate between standards and moral standards. What features should a
moral standard and non-moral standard have?
Moral standards are rules that are all about what is right or wrong, also
it promotes “the good”, that is, the welfare and well-being of humans as
well as animals and the environment. In contrast, non-moral standards
are all about personal taste, manners, or traditions, like how to dress or
eat, and they don’t cause serious harm if broken.

 In the local community, what practices are often mistaken as moral standards
but may actually be matters of tradition or taste?
For example, in local communities it depends on the context; that may
be mistaken for moral standards but is actually:

Wearing specific clothing like barong, hijab, or covering tattoos, etc., is

often seen as a moral obligation but is actually a cultural norm or
religious custom. Also, participation in religious rituals or festivals is
culturally significant but not necessarily a moral have.

 If two people make opposite choices in the same moral dilemma, can both of
them be considered morally, right? Why or why not?
Yes, both of them can be morally correct. Since morality can be
nuanced, and one thing that is good for one individual may not be good
for another. Both of them may be doing something in good faith and
making decisions they think are morally correct.

Activity 3: Written Activity on Moral vs Non-Moral Standards and Dilemmas vs

Moral Dilemmas:

Respond to the following guide questions. Follow the given format below/on the next
page.

 “Not all rules are moral rules or standards”. Give three differences between
moral standards and non-moral standards.
 Enumerate five specific examples of moral standards and five specific
examples of non-moral standards.
 Recall an experience that you consider a moral dilemma. Briefly explain why it
is a moral dilemma and not just any other dilemma.

Moral Standards and Moral Dilemmas

1. “Not all rules are moral rules or standards”. Give three differences between
moral standards and non-moral standards.

Moral Standards
1. Care about what is right or wrong, good or bad in terms of ethical values.
2. Apply to every individual irrespective of individual tastes, culture, or
context.
3. Often backed by strong emotional and conscience-driven reactions.

Non Moral Standards

1. Concern with convention, efficiency, legality, or etiquette, not necessarily
ethics.
2. May vary depending on context, profession, culture, or organization.
3. Typically not connected to moral guilt, but to discipline, order, or
customs.

2. Enumerate five examples of moral and five examples of non-moral standards.

Moral
1. Don't lie or cheat.
2. Treat others with kindness and respect.
3. Don't steal or take what's not yours.
4. Help those in need.
5. Respect people's privacy.

Non-Moral
1. Wear matching socks.
2. Follow dress codes.
3. Stand in line.
4. Be panctual.
5. Use a specific social media platform.

Non-Moral Standards:
2. Treat others with kindness and respect.
2. Follow dress codes.
3. Don't steal or take what's not yours.
3. Stand in line.
4. Help those in need.
4. Be panctual.

5. Respect people's privacy.

5. Use a specific social media platform.

3. Recall an experience that you consider a moral dilemma. Briefly explain why it is
a moral dilemma and not just any other dilemma.

In senior high school, I saw a friend cheat on an quiz. I knew, reporting it

would be the right thing to do, but I also knew it could damage/broke our
friendship and possibly get it into serious trouble.

This was a moral dilemma because it involved a conflict between two moral
values:

First, Honesty and justice; reporting the cheating,

Second, Loyalty and compassion; protecting a friend.

It is wasn't just a practical or personal dilemma. It was a matter deciding

between moral obligations that couldn't both be honored.
