GROUP ASSIGNMENT M003
GROUP NAME: ……………………………………………………………………………………………………STREAM: …………….
GROUP CHAIRPERSON: ………………………………………………………………………EXPECTED SCORE:…………
📐 ITEM 1: COORDINATE GEOMETRY I.
🏗️ A construction team is checking the metal frame of a rooftop billboard
installed on top of a tall building. The frame was built using five fixed points marked with
coordinates as follows:
• The bottom corner of the frame is at (𝟎, 𝟏)
• The top corner is at (𝟔, 𝟒)
• A side support point is at (𝟒, 𝟗)
• A middle joint is at (𝟐, 𝟓)
• A side pipe connection is at (𝟒, 𝟏)
Before approving the design, the supervisor asks the team to check several
things:
1. If the bar connecting the bottom corner and top corner has a positive
slope hence follows the building’s design guide.
2. Whether the part joining the top corner and side support is of the right
length and where its centre lies.
3. How steep the bar in (1) above rises from the ground at the base.
4. If the part joining the middle joint & side support would lie perfectly
along the existing metal bar between the side support and top corner.
5. Whether the points at the side support, top corner, and side pipe form a
right-angled triangular shape.
6. If any two frame parts are exactly parallel or exactly perpendicular.

7. If a metal bracket placed at point (𝟑, 𝟐. 𝟓) is lying along the lower edge
of the frame.
8. How close the middle joint is to the line that connects the bottom and
top corners.
❓ Task:
As a student of principal mathematics, help the team by working through
each of the checks above.

➗ ITEM 2: PARTIAL FRACTIONS.
A fuel supply company in Northern Uganda uses a custom flow control valve in
its tanker systems. To ensure correct calibration, a technician needs to study the fluid
discharge model given by:
𝒙+𝟒
𝑹(𝒙) = 𝟒𝒙𝟑 −𝒙𝟓
This model relates the flow rate, 𝑹 (in litres per second) to the valve position
𝒙, which adjusts pressure between the incoming and outgoing sections of the pipe.
For real-time system monitoring, the technician must re-write this expression
as a sum of simpler fractions which is a more practical form for the software to read
separate pressure influences from different valve points.
❓ Task:
(a) Assist the technician to accomplish his assignment.
(b) Using your result in (a), workout, with the technician, the total flow rate
when the valve is set to position, 𝒙 = 𝟐.
(c) Suppose the software flags a calibration error when the term in 𝑥 −2 , from
your result in (a) above, exceeds 2 litres/sec. For what values of 𝒙 does this happen?

📉 ITEM 3: SCATTER DIAGRAMS & CORRELATION.
🛵 The Operations Manager of “Essence Beauty Den’’ is trying to understand
how the age of their female clients relates to the amount they spend on skincare products.
The manager collects the following data from 10 random customers:

Client A B C D E F G H I J
Age (years) 19 25 35 41 25 46 52 30 21 25
Amount 480 300 280 150 310 100 50 250 480 320
Spent (‘000)
She hopes that the relationship between the age of her clients and the amount
spent will help her predict future spending patterns for marketing purposes.
❓ Task:
(a) Draw a scatter diagram to represent the relationship.
(b) Use the plot to comment on the strength and nature of the relationship.
(c) Rank the data and compute the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient
thence comment on your result.
(d) Advise the dealership on whether age is a strong predictor of how much a
client is likely to spend.

🎰 ITEM 4: PROBABILITY THEORY.
A rural medical centre in Pallisa District is running an outreach programme to
screen villagers for two common conditions: Diabetes (D) and Hypertension (H). Over the
past month, 200 people have been tested, and the following was recorded:
• 84 people had diabetes
• 120 people had hypertension
• 47 people had both conditions
The health officer wants to analyze this data using set-based probability
models to guide their next community intervention.
❓ Task:
(a) Using a Venn diagram, represent the given information clearly.
(b) If a person is randomly selected from the 200, find the probability that;
(i) They had only one of the two conditions
(ii) They were completely healthy
(iii) They didn’t have diabetes or didn’t have hypertension
(iv) They didn’t have both hypertension and diabetes

(v) They had hypertension or didn’t have diabetes
(vi) They had no diabetes given that they had hypertension
(c) Assist the officer to understand whether the event of being diabetic is
statistically independent to the event of being hypertensed.
(d) If 3 people are randomly selected from the 200 without replacement,
calculate the probability that at least one of them had hypertension.

📈 ITEM 5: DIFFERENTIATION I.
💊 A pharmaceutical lab is developing a slow-release medication whose
absorption rate in blood is affected by various models depending on patient type.
Each patient has a unique absorption formula for the concentration, 𝑪 of the
drug (in 𝒎𝒈𝒍 ) at time, 𝒕 hours as shown below:
−𝟏
𝒕
Patient A: 𝑪 = (𝒕−𝟑)𝟒 Patient B: 𝑪 = √{𝟓𝒕𝟓 − 𝟐}
𝟑
Patient C: 𝒙 = 𝒕𝟐 + 𝟐𝒕, 𝒚 = −𝟐𝒕𝟑 , 𝑪 = 𝒙−𝟒 Patient D: 𝑪𝟐 = 𝟖 + 𝒕𝑪
𝟔
Patient E: 𝑪 = 𝒕(𝟏 − 𝒕𝟒 )
❓ Task:
For each patient, determine the expression showing how the concentration of the
drug changes with respect to time and hence deduce which patient will have the steepest
drop in drug concentration at 𝒕 = 𝟐. (25 scores)
