Kay Edward & Katherine McMahon The Petstock Arabian Championships Victoria was held on the 29th October, 2011 at the Tatura Equestrian Complex. Just for a change we had perfect weather for the show and it set the standard for the rest of the day. We are blessed to have a great show team. People of the calibre of Jane Richards, Jeanette Cheney, Bridie White, Sheila Jones and Alistair McGregor. Our announcer Graeme Richards always does a splendid job and keeps those classes running through. Doreen Scott who has run this show for 22 years should be mentioned just for her commitment to this show. Also thanks to Jill Bromley, Margaret Parker and Clint Bilson for their assistance. Our judges this year were Cynthia Richardson from the USA who presided over the Halter Ring, Graeme Cameron arbitrated the Saddle and Elissea Schroen took charge of all the Miscellaneous. All three judges were pleasant and very easy going. This year we introduced some new classes being the Best Presented Led and Ridden, Novice Amateur/ Owner classes and the Half Arabian Jackpot. All these classes were a success. The winner of the Half Arabian Jackpot along with the Supreme Derivative Female was the beautiful grey Anglo mare Akora Fine Art owned by Akora Arabians and

The Junior Gelding class was a very strong class with a combination of Australian, East Coast and National Stud show Champions. The Champion being awarded to Kruse KA owned by Krishlah Arabians and exhibited by Future Farms. The senior gelding Champion was Halimas Desert Shaklan owned by Crystal Lodge Performance Arabians and shown by Heath Rowbottom he went on to be the Supreme Champion Purebred Gelding. The Supreme Purebred Female was the beautiful yearling filly Jesris Bey Kaarizma owned and exhibited by Jesris and Kharine Arabians. Supreme Purebred Male was the very consistent Temar Mahavee owned by Temar Arabians and exhibited by Future Farms. The Derivative Supremes had some very beautiful examples of their catagories exhibited. The decisions in all three sections were very hard for the Judge to decide on with many of the Champions being outstanding horses. The Supreme Gelding was awarded to Warrawee Regal hit owned by Jess Henne and Meaghan Wright and exhibited by Silvio Galea. The Supreme Derivative Male was awarded to the very elegant Bracknell Rodriques owned by Chloe Wearne and exhibited by JH Training. The Saddle classes also were a very high standard of ridden Arabians. The Newcomer and The Debut Class Novice Ridden was won by the gorgeous Ascot Elizabeth Arden owned by Ascot stud and ridden by Emma Adams. The Sue Kavannah Memorial Trophy was won by the Anglo Arabian Halter Champion and Derivative Stallion Ridden Champion ConchertFF owned and exhibited by Future Farms. The Supreme Ridden Arabian was awarded to the always very successful and beautiful Champion Purebred Arabian Ridden Gelding and Champion Show Hunter Galloway Electric Dreams owned by Serenity Park Arabians and expertly ridden by Clint Bilson.

This show always has a lot of classes for our Junior Handlers and Riders and they were all exceptional and beautifully turned out on their lovely Arabians. Jessica and Cody Dertell were very successful and amongst our youngest competitors. Other successful youth were Ashleigh Meagher, Madelaine Preedy, Zoe Bilson,, Adelle Mahoney, Syenna Vasilopolous, Hayley Hinton, Alanah Wood, Ebony Stevens, Alicia Hughes and Sarah Huxtable. All went home triumphant.

This year we put on a BBQ dinner for the competitors and this was very well attended. This will be added to next years program and we especially wish to thank Lea Vasilopolous for supporting this. Thank you. On the Tuesday after the show we took Cynthia and her husband to the Melbourne Cup. We all had a fabulous day. Not only can our judges pick the show horses but they managed to have a lot of success on the track as well. It is to be noted that Sheila Jones and Clint Bilson really backed their choices by putting their money on them and both had a rewarding day. BUT they were eclipsed at the last race by Terry Casey who went home a very, very happy man.

We bought Bianca Rosetta in September 2010 after she won a reserve championship at the Region 13 Regional Show. She had already been shown at Scottsdale for a Top 10 Sweepstakes filly title out of 56 fillies. Our trainer, Terry Leek, found her for us and suggested she would be a great filly to bring out to Australia. Bianca is by the multiple US National Champion, DA Valentino and from Rosetta LA who is herself out of Brazilian National Champion mare, Opus Rose. So winning at top level is in her blood. Since her arrival in February of this year, Bianca has won every 3 y.o class she has attended which is itself a big achievement as she isnt 3 until next March. She won a reserve champion junior filly at Goulburne Valley Show, State Champion Junior filly at the Victorian State Championships, Reserve Champion Junior filly at the National Stud Horse Show and then capped it off with National Capital Junior Champion filly. For the remainder of the season she will attend The Victorian Arabian Horse Classic, Melbourne Summer Royal, East Coast Championships and then the Australian Championships. Bianca is an amazing filly to show and is as quiet as a lamb outside the ring. But as soon as she enters the ring she knows it is time to show. We enjoy watching her being shown by both Paul Hedges and Jayne Bellchambers and we thank them both for the amazing care that they have both shown our precious filly.

(Dunwingeri Aadhamu x Everon park Tanzia) DOB: 2nd November 2003 This gutsy little mare along with Rebecca Bramich is a contender for Newcomers and her ridden. Naarkeeta has been campaigned in endurance for the last 3 years. She has won fittest and best conditioned, ended up in top 10 in point score in Victoria from limited rides and has done numerous 40km, 80km, 120km and the Quilty which she completed for a buckle in September this year in one of the toughest and most trying conditions. Naarkeeta and Rebecca are new to the show ring so this should be just another challenge for this talented duo. Thanks has to also go to Steve Blackhurst who all along has believed in this little mare and she has not let him down once. Naarkeeta is now carrying a junior around the endurance events to obtain her qualifications . If successful at the Classic or even if she ends up last this just goes to show how talented the Arabian breed is. Owned by: El Raz Arabians

Truly Amazing!!!
Wow, and to think of the small things I complain about! This woman is a treasure and her horse is heaven sent! I think there is an angel in that horse! The determined Bettina Eistel and her very special horse, Fabuleax 5.I saw this photo today and it took a while for my brain to register what I was seeing Take a look. Yup. No arms. Her name is Bettina Eistel and her horse is Fabuleax 5. What is even more compelling than the fact that she can brush her horse with her feet, is that she competes, very well, at the Paralympics in dressage. Bettina didnt just overcome her disability, she walloped it! (Kinda makes me feel ridiculous for complaining about anything having to do with just about anything) What is Thalidomide? Thalidomide was a drug they gave pregnant women before it was known that it caused birth defects Hence, Bettina was born without any arms. When I was too little to understand manners, I can remember my mother telling me not to stare at kids I would see who had birth defects. She would shake her head and just whisper, Thalidomide. I remember being very appreciative that I didnt have that kind of a birth defect.

FAST FORWARD Bettina doesnt let her disability stop her. After all, this way of being is all she has ever known As an aside, another disabled Olympian was explaining the difference between being born with a disability versus being born whole and acquiring the disability. This concept is an interesting topic. You probably can come to some of your own conclusions here.

Anyway, as a small child, Bettina learned how to use her feet and toes as her hands and fingers. As a youngster, she started in horseback riding lessons. (Thank goodness her parents supported her and let go of their fears around this.) She wears riding boots with cut-outs in the toes so she can have hands (imagine how cold her toes must get and how often they clip a branch or a fence board ouch!). She can saddle, bridle, hose down, wrap, blanket and do just about anything else that is needed for her horse. And, she rides by steering with her legs and holding the reins in her mouth. IN HER MOUTH. Try that I tried to hold my brush in my mouth while braiding my girls hair and I ended up drooling all over the place in about a minute. I have no idea how she does it. Amazing. Oh, and besides all those horse riding feats, she can text, write and put on mascara with her toes! Hmmmm. Im starting to feel sheepish for complaining about anything After highschool in 1979, Bettina studied the History of Art, Archaeology and Ethnology in Hamburg, followed by an eight-year study of psychology. During her psychology studies, she participated in a project with Hamburgs home for children. In 1989 she completed her studies with a diploma and has since worked as a graduate psychologist in a Hamburg counseling center for children and family therapy.

PARALYMPICS I really couldnt find much information on her coaching (Her coach Franz-Martin Stankus) or how she learned to ride. But, I did find out that she: Eistel was formerly Vice-Europe and Vice World Champion (two silver and bronze at the European Championships in Portugal in 2002 and three silver at the World Championships in Belgium in 2003) and won two silver and one bronze medal at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens , she won also three times the German championship. As the most recent successes are the bronze medal in the required tasks of the individual competition and the silver medal in the team standings at the 2008 Paralympics in Hong Kong. Not bad even for a girl WITH arms HER HORSE You have to really think about the kind of horse who would let this kind of a rider be his partner. Really what temperament is needed to perform at high level dressage as well as take care of a disabled rider? Wow. I wish I knew if they looked high and low for him or if they simply trained a good horse to understand this rider? (I need to read her book.) I mean, did they find a horse and say to him that this is the way we are going to do it now? Or, does the Fabuleax 5 know? I often hear that certain horses are much more gracious with disabled riders than with regular riders. I know that my Gwen is much nicer to children than to me I wonder how that happens? Is it the horse or the quality/feel/spirit of the disabled rider/child that effects the horse? Dunno. Bettina says she trained her horse via voice commands, head movement and leg aids. Funny, I bet hardly any of us would think it was even possible to ride a horse without arms. From where I sit, I would like to be in the presence of the wonderful Fabuleax 5. He is a saint in my book. Fabuleax lets Bettina ride him in the only way she can with the reins in her teeth and the other set of reins between her toes. And, he does his job. Simple. Gosh. Impressive. If you notice in the photos, he lowers his head to be bridled and to be brushed. Atta boy! AFTERTHOUGHT I wanted to bring this story to you because I think sometimes we give up too easily. Or maybe it is just me maybe I think I give up too easily or dont push through my/my horses issues or dont get over myself/my fears or dont put as much effort/time into training my horses as I could. Reading about Bettina was a good shot in the arm for me I sure dont feel like making any excuses or complaining I cannot even imagine folding the laundry with my feet, let alone living 24 hours without my hands. Wow. Very inspirational.
