IMPORTANT USE INFORMATION

WARNINGS AND SAFETY INFORMATION

CAUTION: The Nighthawk Backscatter scanner can
produce x-rays (ionizing radiation) when armed and
triggered. The beam emits from the front center
opening in the face of the scanner. The label shown here
is located on the bottom of the device and indicates the
direction of travel of the scanning x-ray beam.

CAUTION: Proper operator radiation safety training is essential to ensure that

you do not accidentally expose yourself or others to radiation from the primary
beam of x-rays from the Nighthawk Backscatter Scanner when you are operating
the instrument. The operator of the device is responsible for ensuring proper
training has been completed prior to use.

CAUTION: Please consult with the authorities in your jurisdiction to make sure
that you comply with all applicable radiation safety requirements and regulations
when using the Nighthawk Backscatter Scanner. It is the responsibility of the
owner and operator of the device to ensure these requirements and regulations
are met.

WARNING: The Nighthawk Backscatter Scanner must never be used to scan

living people or animals or any portion of their bodies directly.

IMPORTANT: Always treat radiation with respect. Keep your hands on the
handles of the Nighthawk Backscatter Scanner while using the instrument. Never
point the instrument at yourself or at anyone else when the x- ray generator is
running.

IMPORTANT: Always check the area prior to scanning and ensure there is
adequate clearance behind the scanning beam to prevent inadvertent exposure
to sensitive or living objects. Contact your RSO (Radiation Safety Officer) to
review and requirements related to exclusion zones around the scanner.

IMPORTANT: Operation of the Nighthawk Backscatter Scanner for uses other

than its intended purpose may result in harm to the instrument operator and/or
others and is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

WARNING: The Nighthawk Backscatter X-ray Scanners are

equipped with two Class 2 red laser guides indicated by this
symbol. There are two laser guides at the front of the unit that
produce laser radiation. Do not stare into the red laser beams or
view the red laser beams with optical instruments. Although Class

3
UD-000001revA

2 lasers do not cause eye injuries under normal circumstances,

they can produce eye injuries if viewed directly for extended
periods of time.

WARNING: There are no serviceable parts inside the case of the Nighthawk
Backscatter Scanner. Never attempt to service the instrument yourself. Opening
the enclosure or otherwise tampering with the unit will void the warranty on the
instrument.

CAUTION: If you do not fully understand the warnings on the Warning screen,
please press the Back button. Do not proceed before you reread the Radiation
Safety section in this User Guide. By proceeding the user assumes responsibility
for safe and legal use of the device.

DIRECT BEAM RADIATION

The Nighthawk family of scanners feature a proprietary x-ray generator and
optics which produce a scanning pencil beam that sweeps through a ~65° arc
approximately 150 times per second. A two-dimensional x-ray image of the
object is constructed as the unit is moved across the surface of an object
orthogonal to the scanning beam path. A typical scan takes 3-10 seconds. The
maximum allowable scan time is limited by the device and capped at 30 seconds.

The Nighthawk Scanner has extensive built-in radiation shielding surrounding the
x-ray source to minimize x-ray leakage to the operator and surrounding area. An
opening in this shielding allows the primary x-ray beam to exit from the front of
the device in a controlled region.

Potential radiation exposure comes mainly from the scanning pencil beam of x-
rays emitted at the front face of the unit when the instrument is in use. Radiation
safety training is essential and required prior to use of this device. The most
important purpose of this training is to ensure safe operation of the device such
that the operator does not expose themselves or anyone else to the direct beam
of radiation produced by the instrument.

The amount of x-rays emitted per second is dependent on the tube selected for
your scanner. Higher tube power and voltages produce higher x-ray emissions
for the same timeframe.

As of the time of publication, the following tube configurations are available for
the Nighthawk Family:

120kV 5W (42µA) | 120kV 7W (59 µA) | 140kV 7W (50 µA) | 140kV 10W (71 µA)

5

SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION
Each of the Nighthawk Family scanners has an identification label on the
underside of the unit which denotes specific identifying information for the
system configuration and x-ray tube. Do not remove this label as it is required to
identify your system for service and warranty.

• MODEL - Model number of the device

• SN/DOM - Serial Number (SN) appended with any

applicable internal product codes and date of NHHBI-120S7
manufacture (DOM) in MM/YY format.
NHX1234-ABC | 03/23

• X-RAY TUBE - Tube voltage and power/current

120kV 5W (42mA)
information.

BACKSCATTER RADIATION
As items are scanned, some x-rays scatter backwards towards the instrument
operator. The average backscattered radiation energy depends on the following:

• Physical properties of the scanned item

• Distance of the scanned item to the user/front of device
• Voltage/power of the tube in the Nighthawk device
• Duration of scan

The amount of backscattered radiation decreases as the inverse square of the

distance from the object being scanned. At twice the distance, backscattered
radiation is one quarter as much.

Different countries have different occupational standards for exposure to

radiation, but most countries have similar radiation safety regulations for the
general public. In the United States, guidelines set by the National Research
Council (NRC) for the total acceptable radiation dose allowed to members of the
general public from non-naturally occurring sources of radiation is 100 mrem (1.0
mSievert) per year. The NRC standard assumes “As Low as Reasonably
Achievable” (ALARA) radiation safety practices are always used.

PREVENTION OF UNWANTED X-RAY EMISSIONS

The Nighthawk scanners are designed to prevent accidental and prolonged
unintended emission of x-rays. Some of safety features employed in the
Nighthawk line are highlighted below:

PASSWORD PROTECTED USER LOGIN - Users are required to log into the
application using a password. New users can only be added by administrators.
This helps prevent use of the system by untrained or unapproved individuals.

TWO STEP SCAN INITIATION - The system requires the user to participate in a
two-step process prior to enabling X-ray emission. This requirement is
fundamental to safe operation of the device and may not be turned off.

STEP 1 – The user must first arm the device to acknowledge that they
intend to emit X-rays by arming the device.

STEP 2 – Once armed, the user must depress the trigger(s) to apply power
to the tube and emit X-rays.

X-ray emissions only proceed while the triggers are depressed. X-rays
immediately stop once the trigger(s) are released. Pressing the trigger(s) while
the system is disarmed will yield no X-ray emissions.

NOTE: The default scanner configuration requires only one of the

two triggers be depressed to activate the x-ray generator however,
customization is available that prevents single trigger activation and
requires both trigger buttons to be pressed simultaneously. Two-
button triggering must be noted during system ordering/build and
cannot be altered outside of the factory as it is a safety related
option. It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that the system
triggering complies with requirements and regulations of the local
jurisdiction.

MAX SCAN LIMIT - The device also features a hard limitation on x-ray exposure.
The max scan time (x-rays on) is capped at 30 seconds via the system hardware.
This cannot be adjusted or exceeded by the user.

AUTOMATIC DISARM - The system also automatically disarms after a period of

time. Once armed, the unit will begin a timed internal countdown represented
visually by the arming bar moving back towards its locked position. The disarm
time can be adjusted by users and is capped at 60 seconds. The automatic
disarming cannot be turned off.

X-RAY ON LIGHTS - The device has a series of warning lights which illuminate
red during X-ray emissions. The lights are tied into the safety circuit and prevent

7
UD-000001revA

X-ray emissions if the lights are missing or malfunctioning. The user can be
confident that no X-rays are being emitted unless the red warning lights are
illuminated. The location of these lights is defined in the next section.

WARNING AND INDICATOR LIGHTS

The Nighthawk scanners have several lights intended to visually alert the user,
and those in the surrounding area, when x-rays are being emitted and to the
status of the scanner.

The warning/indicator light bar (and on some screens the illuminated dot and
hardware buttons) above the screen changes color to communicate the state of
the device in addition to indicate x-ray emission.

OFF The primary indicator bar (and dot for screen type A) are off
when the scanner is powered down or when the user is logged
into the application and the system is unarmed. No X-Rays can
be emitted in this state.

WHITE On systems with screen type A only, if the indicator lights are
white then the Viken application is started but unarmed (viewing
or navigating the app only). No X-Rays can be emitted in this
state.

BLUE On systems with screen type B only without dot/hardware

buttons on screen, a blue light in the light bar indicates that the
scanner is in standby power mode (the system is powered up,
but the screen is off for power savings). No X-Rays can be
emitted in this state.

GREEN Unit is armed and ready to start a scan. No x-rays are emitted
when the light is green, however, the triggers are activated and
pressing the trigger(s) in this state will start a scan.

RED The x-ray generator is turned on and x-rays are actively being
emitted.

8
UD-000001revA

SCREEN TYPE A SCREEN TYPE B

All other peripheral warning lights on the sides and front of the device feature a
single color.

OFF No x-rays are being emitted/system is off.

RED The x-ray generator is turned on and x-rays are actively being
emitted.

EMERGENCY STOP PROCEDURES

In the event of an issue with the device which leaves the power button, screen,
or the application with reduced or no functionality preventing the typical shut
down process then the user should pull out/remove the battery as a backup
method to ensure complete power down.

Pulling the battery immediately removes power to the device and results in
immediate shutdown. No X-rays or lasers can be emitted while the battery is
disengaged.

NOTE: Pulling the battery is not recommended as a standard power

down method during normal operation as it does not allow the
software to gracefully close all activities and can damage active scan
files.

Whenever possible, users should shut down the system via the standard power
down options defined in the getting started section. If a user notices any
unexpected error messages during the next use after a battery is pulled it is
recommended that the device be powered up, the user log into the application,
and then restart the system normally before proceeding to clear any potential
errors caused by the emergency stop.

disappear once the system is armed and ready to scan.

Once successfully armed, the arming status icon will automatically change from a
white “locked” icon to a yellow “unlocked” icon and the icon will start to slowly
return to the left side of the slider from right to left over a default period of 15
seconds and will revert to locked state once reached. The arm timer length can be
modified in the application Settings menu.

LOCKED (UN ARMED) – TRIGGERS DEACTIVATED

UNLOCKED (ARMED) – TRIGGERS ACTIVATED

TRIGGERING A SCAN
With the x-ray generator armed, the triggers are activated and pressing the handle
triggers at this point will power on the x-ray generator emitting x-rays and
simultaneously collecting either a backscatter or transmission x-ray image
depending on the imaging mode selected.

Triggering a scan will restart the armed timer count down and the unlocked icon
will return to the right most end of the bar and restart its motion to the left.

There are two factory configurable trigger modes available for Nighthawk Series
scanners.

SINGLE TRIGGER MODE (DEFAULT) – By default all systems manufactured as set

up to allow for single triggering meaning that the operator can start a scan by
pressing only one of the two triggers after arming.

DUAL TRIGGER MODE (OPTIONAL CONFIG) – Systems can be built to require

25
UD-000001revA

both triggers to be pressed simultaneously as mandatory by certain jurisdictions.

This configuration must be done at the factory at time of build and cannot be
changed in the system or application settings. This must be selected by the
purchaser at time of order or sent back to the factory to change.

GUIDANCE FOR COLLECTING BEST QUALITY SCANS

Scanning with the Nighthawk system is straightforward, but just as with taking any
kind of photographs, the quality of the acquired images depends on how you
handle the instrument.

When triggered, the scanner's x-ray generator powers up and the detector at the
front of the instrument begins to acquire image data for backscatter images or, if
a transmission accessory is connected and active, the detector within that
accessory acquires image data.

Held stationary, the scanner collects only a single horizontal line (raster) of an
image; the instrument must be moved in a direction orthogonal to the arc of the
scanning pencil beam while keeping the trigger(s) pressed to create a two-
dimensional image of the object you are scanning. For best results, move the
scanner over the item at a constant speed of 6” to 12” (15 to 30 cm) per second.

The longer you keep the trigger(s) pressed, the longer the instrument scans. The
system will allow any length scan from 3 seconds up to the maximum set scan time
(no more than 30s). The system will automatically switch off x-rays and present the
final image if the maximum scan time limit is reached during a given scan. Once
the triggers are released manually the system will stop emitting x-rays and
automatically display the completed image on the Active Scan Screen.

Scanning Tips:

• Longer scan times produce larger image files. Long scans take more
system memory to store and may take slightly longer to process
during enhancement.

• Scanning too fast will create a “compressed” looking image where the
object being scanned can look shorter than in reality while scanning
slower than recommended may create the opposite affect in a visually
“stretched image.”

• If scanning vertically, move from high to low for more intuitive image
review.

• Try to keep scans to a single directional pass over an object of interest.

26
UD-000001revA

Changing directions during the same scan can result in images that are
more difficult to interpret.

If you scan objects using quick, irregular, or shaky movements or with
varying speed the resulting images will be distorted and may be
difficult to interpret. Scanning at a stable consistent speed produces
the best images.

• You may need to take multiple scans to fully image an Item. These
scans may be viewed independently or stitched together to make a
single larger image using the stitching functionality.

The scanner application provides the means to organize and identify scans and
images for easy reference and maintenance of related scans (for example many
different scans and photographs of the same vehicle) via the
Sessions/Items/Images hierarchy.

The scan and image review screens display the structured identification of the
image in the top left corner of the screen for reference. The session name/number
is located on top followed underneath by the Item name/number and the image
name in brackets [ ].

SESSIONS are intended to provide a top-level organization structure

to collect a series of items/images within a set period of time or a
series of items/images related to a single investigation.

ITEMS are intended to provide a lower-level organization structure

under the umbrella of a top-level session. This is commonly used to

28
UD-000001revA

segregate data collected from a specific element or region of interest

within an overall object or area being inspected.

IMAGES reflect each individual Bx Scan, Tx Scan, or photograph taken

as part of the inspection.

NEW SESSION
Select the New Session folder icon and then either assign a name for the session
or use the name the system automatically assigns to it.

To enter a different session name,

touch the text box to the right of the
automatically assigned name, delete
the preassigned name, and use the
keyboard on the lower section of the
screen to enter a new name using the
approved characters list defined in
the menu box.

no associated scans within the SESSION or
ITEM.
30
UD-000001revA

TAGGING SUSPICIOUS IMAGES

The operator can flag an image that looks suspicious
with the Suspicious tag. This permanently marks that
file as suspicious for easy filtering and identification
later.

The tag may only be applied during the initial review

of the active scan. It cannot be applied to images
while viewing in session navigator and it cannot be
removed once the image is stored to the database like
when a subsequent scan is taken or the application is
exited.

ON SCAN SCREEN - A Suspicious tag is indicated as

a red banner with the thumbprint and magnifying glass
icon.

IN SESSION NAVIGATOR - A Suspicious tag is

indicated as a red outline around a Suspicious flagged
IMAGE and a red Suspicious counter is also added to
that ITEM. Opening the flagged IMAGE from Sessions
Navigator menu will show the same red banner with
the thumbprint and magnifying glass icon

NOTE: Saved images cannot be marked as suspicious. This must be

done during initial adjudication on the active scan. Similarly,
suspicious image flags cannot be removed from saved scans.

31
UD-000001revA

FLASHLIGHT ON/OFF
The Flashlight icon allows the user to toggle the built-in flashlight located on the
front face of the scanner on and off.

The flashlight may be used to help illuminate a dark object for a photograph or to
provide additional lighting for the operator to maneuver the scanner accurately in
dark environments.

LASER GUIDES ON/OFF

All the Nighthawk scanners are equipped with two Class 2, 650 nm, red dot lasers
positioned at the front of the unit on either side of the extents of the x-ray beam.
These lasers may be used as approximate reference guides for the approximate
width and location of the scanner’s scanning x-ray beam.

WARNING: Do not stare into the red laser beams or view the red laser beams
with optical instruments. Although Class 2 lasers do not cause eye injuries
under normal circumstances, they can produce eye injuries if viewed directly
for extended periods of time.

IMAGE ENHANCEMENT MENU/TOOLS

The Nighthawk application provides the operator various tools to enhance or adjust
the scan image immediately after a scan is taken on the Active Scan Screen as well
as during previous image review via Sessions Navigator.

The Image Enhancement Menu tools can be accessed by swiping inwards from the
right edge of the screen. This will pull out a drawer type menu with the various tool
icons that can be used to adjust the resulting scan image.

NOTE: The Image Enhancement Menu is not accessible if there is no

active scan on the scan screen as there is no image to adjust. You will
not be able to open it via swiping.

TIP: You can swipe the menu closed or alternately you can tap
anywhere in the image region to auto close the Image Enhancement
Menu.

The resulting reset image is exactly the same as was presented after the initial
scan collection was completed.
33
UD-000001revA

MANUAL CONTRAST ADJUSTMENT

Use the Manual Contrast Adjustment icon to toggle on screen visibility to the
manual contrast adjustment slider.

By default, the application automatically intelligently adjusts the contrast on the

displayed image after initial collection and anytime a filter is changed to best
present the full dynamic range of each image for view. Manual adjustment of the
contrast may help provide further regulation of contrast in certain instances, for
example, to help identify a potential threat in a very bright or dark region of the
image.

Selecting the toggle action icon will turn the icon blue and present a slider bar
overlaid on the scan image with two dots (black = low end clipping / white = high
end clipping). Use your finger to manually slide the dots along the bar to adjust
the contrast as desired.

NOTE: Tapping anywhere on the scan image with the slider displayed will
automatically close the Image Enhancement Menu to provide full image viewing
during adjustment. The slider will remain visible until toggled off.

34
UD-000001revA

INVERSION
Use the Inversion tool to invert the image from light objects on dark background
[default] to dark objects on light background [inverted view].

The icon display will change from black/white [default view] to blue/white [inverted
view] to indicate the current version of the image shown in the view pane.

IMAGE COMPARE
The Image Compare tool allows an operator to compare two different scans side
by side on the screen and can be used to compare either the active scan with a
previous scan or two previous scans relative to one another.

TIP: This capability is particularly powerful to view the same object in both
Bx and Tx views at the same time for systems using a Tx accessory.

TIP: This tool is for quick comparison only. No changes made in compare
mode will be saved to either file. This mode is view only.

ACTIVE SCAN vs SAVED SCAN COMPARE

While on the Active Scan Screen with a scan in view select the Image Compare
icon on the Image Enhancement Menu (right side pull out) to compare the current
active scan to any previously saved scan. This automatically launches a Sessions
Navigator window and allows the operator to select the second image to use in
the comparison. Both images will then appear on the screen with the active scan
on the left and the older scan on the right.

35
UD-000001revA

While in the Image Compare Screen, a full Image Enhancement Menu is accessible
for both images. The left (active scan) image can be manipulated via an image
enhancement pullout menu from the left side of the screen. The right (saved scan)
image can be independently manipulated via a second pull-out menu that can be
swiped out of the right side of the screen. Touching anywhere in the image will
automatically close the menu for that image.

SAVED vs SAVED IMAGE COMPARE

To compare two previously saved images, the operator must open Sessions
Navigator and select the 3 lines/3 dots session navigator menu, then Compare, and
then check the boxes next to the two images to compare. The first image selected
displays on the left. The second image is displayed on the right. The same
menus/tools are available for image enhancement as with the Active vs Save image
compare described above.

When done viewing the side-by-side comparison, touch the screen’s back button
(Triangle) to exit Image Compare and return to either the Active Scan Screen
or Session Navigator Screen from where the Image Compare functionality was
initially launched.

36
UD-000001revA

NOTE: You cannot apply a suspicious flag to either image in Image

Compare mode.

COLORIZING IMAGES
X-ray imaging systems conventionally display images in grayscale. This is also the
default colorization of all images presented by the Nighthawk Scanners application
however the operator may use the Colorize tool to access a menu of five color
mapping options which may improve visualization of objects/areas of interest.

Below is an example of the same image shown in all five colors.

Grayscale Copper HSV Jet Cool

The operator can modify the default color via the main application Settings screen.
See the Application Settings section of this document for more information on
how to change this setting.

IMAGE FILTERS
The Image Filter icon allows the operator to utilize different custom linear and non-
linear image correction filters to provide automatic corrections, adjustments, and
image optimizations to enhance different types of images.

The same Image Filter icon action will behave differently depending on the Filter
Mode selection found in the application settings menu. See the Application
Settings info section of this document for more information on how to change the
filter mode on your device.

The list below identifies the available filters for the two different image types (Bx
and Tx) and briefly describes the filters available for that type.

37
UD-000001revA

Backscatter Image Filters (Bx)

Everyday This is the default filter for Bx scans and is optimized most
general backscatter scans.

Penetration This filter is tuned to enhance visualization of objects behind

thick or dense materials or objects deep within a volume. It
also provides an increased level of smoothing to the image.

High Res This is tuned to visually sharpen edges particularly in regions

of high contrast.

Steel This filter is specifically tuned to use cases where the operator
is imaging behind thick steel plates or images on objects with
very high attenuation (low signal).

None This filter presents the scan data with only basic processing
for viewing.

Transmission Image Filters (Tx)

Everyday This is the default filter for Tx scans and is optimized for most
general transmission scans that include a combination of high
and low attenuation materials.

Penetration This filter is tuned to enhance visualization of objects behind

thick or dense materials or objects deep within a volume. It
also provides an increased level of smoothing to the image.

None This filter presents the scan data with only basic processing
for viewing.

TOGGLE MODE
By default, new scanners and existing scanners with new software installs will be
automatically set to Toggle Mode. While in Toggle Mode the Image Filter icon
behaves as a toggle and switches between the two most commonly used filters
Everyday and Penetration.

A pop-up message will display briefly each time the filter is toggled to inform the
operator of the active filter. The color of the toggle icon will also change (black =
Everyday / blue = Penetration) as another indicator of the toggle status. Contrast
will be automatically optimized, each time the image is toggled.

38
UD-000001revA

MENU MODE
If the operator changes the application Filter Menu Mode setting to Menu Mode,
then selecting the Filter Icon will bring up an expanded menu of all available filters
for the type of image (Bx or Tx) being viewed.

MAIN APPLICATION MENU

The Main Application Menu is accessible from the Active
Scan Screen and allows a user to access several key
features of the application. This menu is displayed by
pressing the 3 lines (3 dots on some screens) button in the
lower right corner of the active scan screen.

NOTE: Sessions Navigator information will be skipped

in this section and detailed in its own section due to
the large level of functionality contained within
Sessions Navigator. 2

APPLICATION SETTINGS
Selecting the top menu item will access the main Application Settings where a user
can customize their experience with the application and set global settings as
desired.

41
Color Mode
The Color Mode setting allows the user to switch the
standard color mapping for new scans from the typical
grayscale [default] to one of the 5 alternate colormaps. All
new scans will automatically be displayed in the selected
colormap and can be subsequently changed on a scan-by-
scan basis via the Image Enhancement Menu.

Filter Menu Mode

The Filter Menu Mode setting allows the user to switch
between Toggle Mode [default] and Menu Mode which alters
the behavior of the filter icon in the Image Enhancement
Menu.

Setting this to Toggle Mode results in the Filters Icon in all

Image Enhancement Menus to function as a toggle that
switches between the two primary filters used for most
common scans.

Setting this to Menu Mode changes the functionality of that

same Filter Icon to open a full menu of an extended list of
filters adapted to very specific use cases.

Laser
Change Off [default] setting of the lasers to keep them
continuously On at all times. You are still able to adjust the
laser setting on the fly from the Scan Management Menu
while on the active scan screen. Alternatively, you may also
choose On During Imaging which means the lasers will be
turned on for the duration of the scan and then turned off
upon scan completion.

Arm Time Out

Selecting the Arm Time-out setting area will open a window
that allows the user to select the ratio button corresponding
with how many seconds the x-ray tube will remain armed
from 15s [default], to 30s or 60s.

Auto Logoff
Checking the box for Auto Logoff will enable auto logoff
functionality and activate the Auto Logoff (minutes)
selection. Tap on the Auto Logoff (minutes) area to open the
selector menu and select the desired time in minutes of
inactivity after which the application will automatically logoff
the current user. Options are 10/15/30/ or 60 minutes.
NOTE: This feature is turned off by default.
42
Chopper Wheel Time-out
Selecting the Chopper Wheel Time-out setting will open a
window that allows the user to select how many minutes the
chopper wheel will remain active before powering off within
2 min, 5min [default] or 10min.

NOTE: Extended timeouts for chopper wheel

activation may impact battery life.

System Activity Logging

The System Activity Logging setting enables the
system’s automatic activity logging. This provides
traceability and can assist in troubleshooting.

GPS Location Enable

The GPS Location Enable setting is controlled via a
checkbox and enables the GPS tagging of image
files. A checked box [default] means GPS Location
is enabled. An empty box means GPS Location is
disabled.

Lead Detection
The Lead Detection setting will be black/available
for scanners with the optional +Pb Upgrade (Lead
Detection) installed at the factory.

This setting features a checkbox to turn on/off lead

LOWEST HIGHEST
detection. A checked box means Pb detection is SENSITIVITY SENSITIVITY
enabled. An unchecked box means Pb detection is
disabled.

NOTE: Running lead detection all the time may impact battery life.

NOTE: If this setting is greyed out, your unit was not configured with +Pb
lead detection capabilities.

The related Sensitivity slider controls the sensitivity level at which lead is detected.
The default setting is shown about (roughly 70%). This is the setting recommended
for detecting smaller lead objects typical of concealment traps without being
triggered by trace Pb elements used for manufacturing or chemical composition
of common materials.

Moving the slider towards the left portion (0%) of the slider reduces sensitivity of
the Pb detector and requires a more substantial amount lead before the Pb alert
flag is triggered.

43
Moving the slide towards the right portion (100%) increases the sensitivity of the
detector and only requires very small amounts of Pb to trigger the Pb alert flag.

Delete data after number of days

The Delete data after number of days setting is
disabled by default. This setting can be turned
on and set to a defined number of days as a
means to manage scanner memory storage by
automatically removing old files. No checkmark
[default] means this feature is disabled. Enable
this feature by clicking on the empty box.
Enabling will activate the secondary setting to
control the number of days after which data will
be deleted.

44
SESSIONS NAVIGATOR
The Sessions Navigator interface accessed
from the main application menu allows you to
review and filter all data stored locally on your
scanner via a visual thumbnail library and
accompanying menu options. This feature can
be reached by selecting the 3 dot/line menu
button and then selecting Sessions Navigator.

The data is organized in a visual hierarchy that

reflects top level SESSION (denoted by grey
banner) with one or more subgroupings
referred to as an ITEM.

Each individual scan or photo is referred to as

an individual IMAGE.

IMAGE TYPE INDICATOR

The image thumbnails are presented as visual preview of the actual file. Each
thumbnail has an indicator in the lower left-hand corner to denote the image type.

Bx = Backscatter
Tx=Transmission
= Photo

45
REVIEWING & MANIPULATING SAVED IMAGES
In Sessions Navigator, touch any scan or photo to select and open the item in the
full sized scan review screen.

NOTE: The user can return to the Session Navigator file management
area at any point by pressing the back arrow repeatedly until you
return to the navigator view. Pressing the back arrow while in navigator
view will return the user to the active scan screen.

For Bx and Tx scans the user will be able to access the same right hand Image
Enhancement Menu available when reviewing the active scan by swiping in from
the right edge of the screen.

This menu allows the operator to adjust and enhance images using filters, colors,
contrast adjustments, etc on the image that is currently open for review.

The system will automatically resave the image with any enhancements applied as
the user has the file open for review. The thumbnail shown in sessions navigator
will automatically update to show the latest filters. For example, if you opened a
saved image in greyscale and then changed it to copper filter and returned to the
session navigator, the thumbnail would now show the copper filter view. Selecting
that same image would reopen it with the same copper filter applied to the scan.

The software now allows the operator to quickly swipe through multiple images
saved within a single item by swiping  left or right on the center of the view
screen. The image name is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen for
reference.

48
EXPORT TO USB
The Export to USB function allows selected scans and images to be exported
directly to certain USB sticks.

Plug in the Viken supplied USB stick with the supplied adapter to the port on the
back of the scanner.

USB CONNECTION

NOTE: The drive must be connected prior to running the Export to

USB command or the files will not export correctly.

NOTE: Viken cannot confirm compatibility with all USB drives and
required formatting type (FAT32). Use the Viken supplied USB stick
to ensure consistent performance or contact Viken for additional
sticks as needed.

Select Export to USB from the drop down Session Navigator Function Menu. A
white box will pop up next to every Session, Item, and Image. Check the box for
every object you wish to export then touch the arrow at the upper right side of
the screen to complete the transfer and move a copy of all the selected items to
the USB stick.

The stick may be removed at this time. There is no need to formally eject the USB
drive from the Nighthawk scanner.

EXPORT (FOR WIRED TRANSFER TO DEVICE/PC)

The Export function works the same as Exporting to USB however the selected
items are sent to a folder that is automatically generated on the Scanner’s internal
operating system file drive instead. The exported folder is created with the name
and timestamp of the export command and contains a copy of all the selected files
in the same structure as shown in Sessions Navigator for easy reference.

49
To transfer the files from the scanner to a PC/device the user must connect the
scanner to the desired PC/device directly using the provided USB cable. Be sure
to say “yes” to all permissions when prompted. DO NOT ASSOCIATE THE
SCANNER AS A CAMERA WITH YOUR PC. If prompted, select “do nothing”. Once
recognized you can open your file explorer and locate the Scanner which will show
up as a storage device, labeled as “HBI” or “Viken HBI”.

NOTE: A USB cable is provided as part of the standard accessories

shipped with each system. Use the provided cable to ensure
consistent performance.

From the PC/device, browse to the following folder within the connected
Nighthawk scanner: (my computer)\HBI120\Internal storage\HBI\Export. This
folder will contain the exported top level folder, sorted by date and you will find
the Sessions/Items/Images you requested within that folder.

NOTE: Each x-ray scan image exported will result in three related files:
a .jpg, .tiff and .text file.

CAUTION: Do not delete any folders outside of this Export area on

the Scanner or you may impact functionality of the system.

50
FILTER
The Filter function can be used to limit visibility of items in Session Navigator view
to only those items that meet certain selectable criteria. Select the Filter Icon to
the left of the Sessions Navigator Function Menu to open up the Filter interface.

IMAGE STITCHER
The Image Stitcher allows you to permanently combine 2-6 images together to
form a single file that provides an extended view of a large scan area.

NOTE: Stitched images maintain the ability to be enhanced by the

scanner’s enhancement tools as a single entity.

The stitching function is available via opening the Main Application Menu and
selecting Image Stitcher. This will open an empty stitching session in the stitch
tool.

Start a stitch by selecting + from the menu at the bottom of the screen to open a
session navigator window that allows you to select the first image to add to the
stitch. The Session Navigator window will close and the selected image will appear
in the stitcher workspace.

Continue to press + and add additional images to the stitch as desired. You can
add up to a total of 6 images.

NOTE: You can add previously stitched images to a new stitch.

Each image may be scaled independently by placing two fingers on the image and

51
pinching in and out. You may also move the complete palette by placing two
fingers on the palette and moving them around.

You can remove a scan from the stich workspace by selecting the trash icon.

You can adjust the zoom [zoom in (+) / zoom out (-)] of the workspace using the
magnifying glasses.

The bracketed icon resets the scales on all images and returns all scans to the

52
default/original stitch formation.

The undo arrow reverts the last move/scale of any image.

The stitch function permanently combines or “sews” the separate image files
together to create a single large file.

Once an image is stitched, the button will change to a save icon to and allow you
to save the stitched image.

TIP: Make sure to save the stitch prior to leaving the screen or it will be erased.

53
SYSTEM CHECK
System Check is a maintenance procedure that must be run on all Nighthawk
Series imagers to preserve tube life at preset intervals based on recommendations
from the tube manufacture. This process generates X-rays over a period of time
to exercise the tube.

NOTE: System Check is not a calibration of the

system. The scanner does not require recalibration.

A System Check is typically required upon initial use after

shipping/delivery and if the scanner has not been used for
an extended period of time since the last x-ray scan.

NOTE: The trigger period varies slightly for the

different series tube types and power levels. The
system will apply the correct interval for its tube.

If required, the system will automatically prompt the user

to complete a System Check when the scanner is armed.
The user can also choose to manually initiate a System
Check at any time, using the application’s Main Settings
Menu.

The following popup message is displayed when a System Check is initiated (either
by the system or the user) prompting the user to place the instrument on the
System Check Shield. This shield manages x-ray emissions during the System
Check Process.

NOTE: The unit will not allow the user to make scans until the system check
is successfully completed.

Selecting NO aborts the System

Check process and the following
message displays:

Select OK to proceed back to

the scan screen.

CAUTION: Do not select YES unless the appropriate check sample /

shield is installed and the unit is on a stable surface and safely orientated.
Do not hold or move the system during system check.

54
The correct check shield must be installed prior to selecting YES. Each series
requires a different check shield to fit the unique detectors. The check shields are
provided as part of the standard accessories shipped with each scanner. Please

Install the check shield on to the front of your scanner as shown below on the
Nighthawk-HBI Series scanner and place the scanner down on the ground such
that the face of the detector is pointed towards the ground. This safely directs any
excess radiation away from sensitive objects or people and provides a stable
surface for the device.

Once the Check Sample Radiation Shield is attached, press YES to initiate the
System Check. The message box “System Check Running” will stay on the screen
until the process is completed, typically after about 10-30 seconds.

NOTE: Moving or disturbing the system during the system check may
result in the process continuing longer than 1 minute. If this occurs the
user must close the application, restart, and repeat the system check
with the unit on a stable surface.

55
The System Check process automatically turns on the HBI’s
optical engine and x-ray generator. When the process is
completed, the x-ray generator and optical engine will then
shut down automatically and you can use the HBI to take
scans.

Do not remove the Check Shield or disturb the unit until the
message box saying “System Check complete” pops up.

Remove system check shield and store for future use. Proceed to use your system
normally.

SCAN COUNTER
The Scan Counter records the number of scans that are taken for up to seven
days. In addition, it provides the date and number of scans that were taken on each
of those days.

56
REPORTS
The Reports option allows the user to select from several different reports to run
and save. These files can be exported and used for troubleshooting and review
during service or repair.

The BROADWING-DTX is a dynamic transmission

detector accessory compatible only with the
NIGHTHAWK-BTX Series imagers running
software version 4.3.0 or later. This detection
device collects x-rays which have passed
through an object (instead of x-rays scattering
back off an object as in traditional backscatter
imaging).

The transmission imaging of the DTX provides

enhanced visibility for dense objects and
metallics (guns, knives, wires, etc) beyond what is
achievable from backscatter imaging alone.

Viewing transmission (Tx) images and backscatter (Bx) images of the same object
help provide a complete visualization of any hidden objects. The example images
below show the same luggage object scanned with Bx (best visualization of
organics) and then again with Tx (best visualization of metallic objects).

SHIPPING & TRANSPORT

It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the safe and legal transport of the
device.

The Nighthawk scanners are designed to be shipped while safely packed inside the
provided hard weatherproof case with the original cardboard and foam overpack
container materials originally shipped with the system. It is recommended that
these materials be kept for safe shipping between sites or for use shipping the
device to a service center.

Shipping a scanner in unapproved materials (examples: a backpack, padded

envelope, or in any self-pack materials) will void any active warranty and any
damaged incurred will be the responsibility of the shipper. Please contact Viken
service if you are unable to locate the original materials prior to shipping.

Be aware that the system includes the use of both internal (non removeable) and a
removeable lithium-ion battery pack(s) and an X-ray generator which may both
subject to differing regulations based on local jurisdictions.

Make sure to check with local authorities to ensure compliance with any
transportation requirements.

IN EVENT OF DAMAGE OR LOSS

Do not use the scanner if there are any signs or indications of damage. For
example, if the external housing shows signs of damage/cracks, there are signs of
internal damage like loose parts, rattle sounds, or the unit is not functioning
normally. Remove the battery from the main body and clearly mark the unit to
prevent other use. Contact any RSOs for your location and also contact Viken
Detection Service or your local Viken approved service center for guidance on
73
how to safely return the scanner.

If the unit is lost or stolen, contact any RSOs or radiation regulatory authorities for
your location. You may also be required to contact your local law enforcement
agency if a crime is suspected.

DISPOSAL
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that any equipment is disposed of per
all local regulations and requirements.

The Nighthawk Family of scanners includes lithium-ion batteries, lead for shielding
ionizing radiation, and scintillator material that typically require special
considerations for disposal in most locations.

Viken encourages recycling where possible.

DISCLAIMERS
The information contained within this guide is provided for your information only.
The information and recommendations set forth herein are made in good faith and
are believed to be accurate as of the date of preparation. However, Viken
Detection MAKES NO WARRANTY, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, WITH
RESPECT TO THIS INFORMATION AND DISCLAIMS ALL LIABILITY FROM
RELIANCE ON IT.

The owner and/or operator of any Viken imaging device is responsible for proper
storage and protection of sensitive information on the device including potentially
personally identifiable information (PPI). Sensitive information should be removed

or service. Viken makes no claims to secure, back up or restore scans or files
stored on the device.

U.S. REGULATIONS FOR USE OF INDUSTRIAL X-RAY DEVICES

State Registration

Each U.S. State has a regulating body that oversees use of both medical and
industrial x-ray devices. If you are acquiring a Viken x-ray device, you are required
in most states to register your device with a state radiation control authority
before use in that state. The registration may be required prior to delivery, prior
to use, or within 15 to 30 days of installation (depending on the specific state
74
requirements). If you are acquiring this unit for resale or leasing, your customer
may also be required to register. A listing of state radiation control authorities as
of October 2022 is available at https://www.nrc.gov/agreement-states.html.
(subject to change; you are responsible for locating and contacting the applicable
state radiation control authority.) NOTE – Federal entities are typically not subject
to these State registration or regulatory requirements.

Requirements for X-Ray Registrants

Requirements vary by state and may include (but necessarily limited to) some of
the items listed below.

Written Safety Program – A simple document describing the safety

protocols that will be in place.

User Radiation Safety Training – Some basic radiation safety training is

recommended prior to using any x-ray device. Many of the registration
authorities will require it. Viken can provide an example presentation
for your unlimited use.

Device Radiation Survey – As part of the registration, you may be required

to submit a radiation survey performed by a registered service
provider or a person registered with the state agency to perform such
services.

Radiation Exposure Monitoring (Dosimetry) – Some states require

operators of a portable XRF analyzer to wear a monitoring device
called a dosimeter during use of the analyzer. A dosimeter is a device
that measures radiation exposure. In most cases, the type of dosimeter
required is a ring dosimeter. Two companies who offer dosimetry
services in the US and much of the world are Mirion Technologies (800)
251-3331 and Landauer Inc. (800) 323-8830.

Registration and Regulatory Information By State
