1.1 What is Control System
• Control system is the arrangement of physical components connected or
related in such a manner as to command, regulate, direct or govern itself or
another system.
• Control is a set of technologies that achieve desired patterns of variations
of operational parameters and sequences for machines and systems by
providing the necessary input signals
• Is a system capable of monitoring and regulating the operation of a process
or a plant. The study of the control system is essentially a study of an
important aspect of systems engineering and its applications.
1.2 Components of a Control System
The Diagram below is an example of a control system (Feedback control

1.3.1 Open Loop Control system
Advantages: The advantages of open loop control system are,
1) Such systems are simple in construction and hence economical.
2) Very much convenient when output is difficult to measure.
3) Such systems are easy from maintenance point of view.
4) Generally these are not troubled with the problems of stability.
Disadvantages: The disadvantages of open loop control system are,
1) These systems are inaccurate and unreliable because accuracy of such
systems are totally dependent on the accurate pre-calibration of the
controller.
2) These systems give inaccurate results if there are variations in the
external environment.
3) Relatively slow in response to demand change

Disadvantages: The disadvantages of open loop control system are,
[Link] systems cant sense internal disturbances in the system, after
the controller stage.
[Link] of the controller is necessary, time to time to maintain the
quality and accuracy of the desired output.
