Introduction
The International School of Musicians is dedicated to ensuring that music education is
accessible for everyone. To this end, all content for our online examinations can be found
in the International School of Musicians Examination Books for the relevant instrument
and grade. These are available free of charge on our website:

The Syllabus and Repertoire

Each examination level’s exam book contains five technical exercises and five pieces, all
of which you will find in this book.

Your examination includes two components. For Component 1: Technical Work, you
will perform two exercises of your choice from this book. For Component 2:
Performance you will perform three pieces of your choice from this book.

You may also select your exercises and pieces from the ISoM Syllabus for your chosen
instrument.

We allow the use of limited free-choice pieces (FCPs) by candidates to play in place of the
ISoM repertoire. FCPs may not constitute the majority of pieces performed by candidates
during an examination, and these must be agreed in advance by ISoM before the
examination.

How are the marks allocated?

Component 1 is marked out of twenty-five. For Component 2 each of three pieces are
marked out of twenty-five each, making a subtotal for this section of 75, bringing the total of
the whole examination to 100.
