Table of Contents
1. Introduction to Algebra
2. Key Concepts
3. Algebraic Expressions
4. Equations
5. Formulas
6. Solved Examples
7. Practice Questions
8. Summary
1. Introduction to Algebra
Algebra is a branch of mathematics dealing with symbols and rules for manipulating those symbols.
It provides a way to represent problems or situations using equations and expressions.

2. Key Concepts
• Variables – symbols that represent unknown values (e.g., x, y).
• Constants – fixed values like numbers 2, 5, 10.
• Expressions – combinations of variables, constants, and operations.
• Equations – statements showing equality between expressions.
3. Algebraic Expressions
Examples of expressions include: 2x + 3, 5y - 7, x² + y².
They can be simplified using rules of arithmetic and algebra.

4. Equations
Equations involve expressions connected by an equals sign. For example, 2x + 3 = 7. Solving
means finding the value of the variable that makes the equation true.
5. Formulas
Formulas are special equations showing relationships between variables.
Formula Meaning

A=l×w Area of rectangle

C = 2πr Circumference of circle
d = rt Distance = rate × time
6. Solved Examples
Example 1: Solve 2x + 3 = 7 → 2x = 4 → x = 2.
Example 2: Solve 3y – 5 = 10 → 3y = 15 → y = 5.
Example 3: If 4a = 20, then a = 5.
7. Practice Questions
Q1. Simplify: 2x + 3x – 4.
Q2. Solve: 5y + 7 = 22.
Q3. Write the expression for: twice a number plus 6.
Q4. If x = 3, evaluate 2x² + 5.
8. Summary
Algebra allows us to represent real-life situations using symbols and equations. By learning how to
simplify expressions, solve equations, and apply formulas, students build a strong foundation for
advanced mathematics.
