Slide 1 - Enter the eLearning
Slide notes
Welcome to the BullSequana Firmware upgrade training.
Slide 2 - Firmware upgrade
Slide notes
A TS (Technical State) refer to the firmwares and drivers version certified for a technical level.
A TS version is named as XY.ZZ.
X an increase indicate the TS provides new features and may include fixes.
Y an increase indicate a maintenance TS with a set of fixes.
ZZ an increase indicates a patch that fixes specific issues.
Slide 3 - Firmware upgrade
Slide notes
Two ways to perform firmware upgrade. Graphical Interface from SHC. Command line tools - BSMHW.
Refer to the Technical State ( TS ) release notes before updating firmware.
The Technical State ( TS ) release notes may contain specific necessary steps for each Technical State.
The TS release notes are available from the support site.
Slide 4 - Graphic SHC
Slide notes
Upgrade the firmware of a component of all modules of the same partition.
Each component must be upgraded manually.
Slide 5 - Graphic SHC
Slide notes
The “Firmware update” from SHC will upgrade the same component of all modules of a partition.
The components (BMC, BIOS, …) must be upgraded one by one in the order listed in release notes.
The system must be powered off for the upgrade.
In this example, the BMC is running the firmware version 33.54.05. It will be updated. See next slides.
Slide 6 - Graphic SHC - example
Slide notes
The BMC is going to be updated with the new 33.69.00 version from the TS iso files downloaded from web Support On Line; SOL.
Slide 7 - Graphic SHC - example
Slide notes
After the upload is complete, start the update with the “Update” button.
The new version will be saved in the BMC and the BMC will reboot to load the new version.
The SHC connection will be lost during the BMC reboot.
Slide 8 - BSMHW_NG CLI
Slide notes
The upgrade with the CLI command allows for a global upgrade with the command “bsmfwglobalupg”.
This command will upgrade all components (BMC, BIOS, etc …) of all modules of the partition.
It is the recommended option for the upgrade.
Take a time to read the following steps and the commands to run for a global upgrade.
Refer to the documentation “Remote Hardware Management CLI” for user manual of Command Line Interface options.
Slide 9 - BSMHW_NG CLI
Slide notes
Check the firmware version of all components.
Slide 10 - BSMHW_NG CLI
Slide notes
Run a compare command to identify the components that will be updated with the new firmware delivered with the technical state.
Slide 11 - BSMHW_NG CLI
Slide notes
Run the global firmware update command to update all components of the modules of the partition.
Each firmware update outputs and status is logged into the BSMHW_NG folder under the /var/log.
Slide 12 - BSMHW_NG CLI
Slide notes
After the global firmware update is complete, check the version of all components is correct.
Slide 13 - Upload TS Bios Settings
Slide notes
What ever the TS upgrade is done with SHC or CLI, the last step is to upload the BIOS settings delivered with the TS.
This is only available with CLI command. Take a time to read the following steps and the commands.
