ACKNOWLEDGMENT
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my Physics teacher for their valuable
guidance, support and encouragement throughout the completion of this project. I am also
thankful to my school for providing the necessary resources and environment.
AIM
To study the relation between the load applied and the extension produced in a spring, and
hence verify Hooke’s Law.
APPARATUS REQUIRED
• A helical spring
• A rigid support / stand with clamp
• A pointer attached to the spring
• A vertical scale (millimeter scale)
• A set of slotted weights
• Weight hanger
THEORY
Hooke’s Law states that, within elastic limit, the extension produced in a spring is directly
proportional to the applied force (load). Mathematically:
F ∝ x or F = kx
Where:
F = applied force (mg)
x = extension produced in the spring
k = spring constant (stiffness of spring)
Thus, by plotting a graph between Force (F) and Extension (x), we get a straight line, whose
slope gives the spring constant (k).
PROCEDURE
1. Suspend the spring vertically from a rigid support.
2. Attach a pointer to the lower end of the spring and place a scale behind it.
3. Note the initial reading of the pointer (without any load).
4. Suspend a weight (say 50 g) from the spring and note the new pointer position.
5. Record the extension produced (= new reading – initial reading).
6. Repeat the procedure for different weights (100 g, 150 g, 200 g, etc.).
7. Plot a graph between applied load (Force = mg) and extension (x).
OBSERVATION TABLE
S. No. Load (m in kg) Force F = mg Pointer Extension x
(N) Reading (cm) (cm)
1 0.05 0.49
2 0.10 0.98
3 0.15 1.47
4 0.20 1.96
5 0.25 2.45
RESULT
The graph between Force and Extension is a straight line, verifying Hooke’s Law.
From the slope of the line:
k = F / x (spring constant).
PRECAUTIONS
1. The spring should not be stretched beyond its elastic limit.
2. Readings should be taken without parallax error.
3. The weights should be added and removed slowly to avoid oscillations.
4. The scale should be kept vertical for accurate readings.
