Course Code: ENGL1a Course Title: Purposive Communication

Course Description: Purposive Communication is a three-unit course that develops students’ communicative competence and enhances their cultural and
intercultural awareness through multimodal tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a multicultural audience
in a local or global context. It equips students with tools for the critical evaluation of a variety of texts. It focuses on the power of language and the impact of

images to emphasize the importance of conveying messages responsibly. The knowledge, skills, and insights that students gain from this course may be used in

Grading System (Numerical)
1. Attendance - 25%
2. Other Requirements - 35% (Quizzes/Character, Behavior, & Attitude/Recitation/Activity/Written work)
3. Major Examination - 40%
Final Grade Computation: Prelim Grade (50%) + Final Period Grade (50%) = FINAL GRADE (100%)
Course Policies (as guided by Manuals and Minutes of Meeting)
1. Special or make-up quizzes, exams and performances will be given only if there are justifiable reasons.
2. Cellular phone use during class hours is prohibited unless special permission is granted. Electronic gadgets are also not allowed unless they are relevant
to the class lesson/discussion.
3. Concerns about grades, activities, performances, etc., can be politely discussed with the subject teacher.
4. Students are expected to display the highest degree of honesty and professionalism in their class work, requirements, activities, and dealings with fellow
students and teachers.
5. Students must submit all required final course work and final examination outputs/materials within seven (7) working days after the final exam.

6. No Incomplete (INC) Grades Policy:
All General Education (Gen Ed) courses under contractual instructors do not provide a grade of INC (Incomplete). Hence, all course requirements must be finalized
within the prescribed time frame in the syllabus.
7. Grading Policy for Missing Requirements:
If a student fails to submit the required coursework or final examination materials within the specified deadline (7 days for Gen Ed, 14 days for BSE), the
instructor will calculate and submit the semester grade without including the missing requirement.
8. Responsibility for Meeting Deadlines:
It is the student's responsibility to meet the specified deadlines for submitting coursework and final examination materials. Failure to do so will result in grading
based on the work submitted by the deadline.
