Lesson Plan in Science 3

Quarter II
School: DAMILAG INTEGRATED SCHOOL

I. Objectives

At the end of 45-minute lesson, the pupils will be able to:

Identify the parts of plants and their functions

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Parts and Functions of a Plant
B. Materials: Real plant, Diagram of a plant (printed), Magnifying glasses, Chart or worksheet
with labeled parts of a plant, Craft materials for the extension activity
C. References: Science 3 textbook & LM
D. Strategy: Realia, Cooperative Learning, 4 E Model
E. Values: Appreciate the help of the plants in our daily life.
F. Science Concept: The parts of the plant are roots, stem, leaves, flowers and fruits.
Not all plants have the same parts.
III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Classroom Inspection
B. Preparatory Activities
1. Review

Class, last meeting we discussed about different kinds of animals and what they eat and
also the parts of their body they used to eat. So who can give me an example of an
animal and the food it eats and what part of the body it uses.

What happens when animals are not provided with their needs such as food and water?

We must always feed our pets or animals.

2. Motivation

Dance: Plants

3. Presentation

A. Engage

Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and engage students curiosity.

Activity:

Begin by showing students a real plant or a picture of a plant.

Ask:
What do you notice about the plant?
What are some parts of the plant you can see?

How do you think these parts help the plant survive?

Write the pupils responses on the board. This will allow pupils to think critically about
the plant and start the process of identifying its parts.

4. Discussion

B. Explain (Direct Instruction)

Purpose: Provide a clear explanation of the plant parts and their functions

Our lesson for today is about the ‘Parts of the Plant and their Functions’’

Do you have plants in your home? What are the plants you have at home?

Tell me what kind of plants do you know and always see from your surroundings?

Use a diagram of a plant to explain each part and its function.

PLANT - a living thing that grows in the ground, usually has leaves or flowers, and
needs sun and water to survive.

Roots: Anchor the plant in the soil and absorb water and nutrients from the ground.

Stem: Supports the plant and transports water, nutrients, and sugars between the
roots and leaves.

Leaves: Absorb sunlight to perform photosynthesis, which produces food for the
plant.

Flowers: Help with the reproduction process by attracting pollinators and producing
seeds.

(Show video or a short clip) to help guide the explanation . Ask question like:

What happens if the roots don’t get enough water?

How do the leaves help the plant make food?

Why do you think flowers are important for the plant?

Do you think plants can help us to live?

Plants provide us with food, fiber, shelter, medicine and fuel.
.
Do you now understand the parts and functions of plants?
So, what are the importance of plants in our life? Is GOD created the plants?

Values Integration: PLANTS help us in many ways so that we have to take care of
it and do not destroy it.
Curriculum Integration: (Araling Panlipunan) Explore the role of plants in various
cultures, economies and histories.
-Plants historical significance, such as crops, medicinal plants or
religious symbolism. The economic impact of agriculture and plant cultivation.

5. Differentiated Activities

C. Explore (Hands-On-Activity)

Purpose: Give pupils the opportunity to explore and discover the parts and
functions of a plant through observation)

Activity1: Observing Plant Parts

-If possible, provide each group with a small live plant or a clear image of a plant.

-Ask pupils to carefully examine the plant or the picture and identify different parts (roots,
stem, leaves, flowers)

-Use magnifying glasses for closer observation, especially for smaller parts like veins on
leaves or details on the stem.

-Allow pupils to sketch the plant in their notebooks, labelling the parts they can identify.

Activity 2: Plant Part Function Matching

( Provide index cards or printable cards with names of plant parts and their functions).

Prepare cards with plant parts (ex. Roots, stem, leaves, flowers, fruits) an their
functions (ex. “absorbs water”, “ supports the plant”, “performs photosynthesis” ,”helps
with reproduction”)

Shuffle the cards and ask pupils to match each part with its correct function.

Activity 3: Group Discussion

-Have students discuss what each part of the plant might do.

-Ask them to think about how each part (roots, stem, leaves, flowers) might help the
plant survive in its environment.

-Why are the roots important for a plants survival?

-What would happen if a plant didn’t have leaves?

-How do flowers help the plant grow and reproduce?

6. Generalization

How important is plant to our life?

What are the parts of a plant?

- Roots, Stem, Leaves, Flowers,Fruits

IV. Evaluation

D. Evaluate (Assessment and Reflection)

Purpose: Assess students understanding of the parts of a plant and their functions.

Labelling Worksheet

Provide pupils with a worksheet that includes a diagram of a plant. Have them label
the different parts of the plant (roots, stem, leaves, flowers, fruits).

Additionally, ask pupils to write a sentence about the function of each part.

V. Assignment

E. Extension Activity: Have pupils create a model of a plant using craft materials (ex.
Construction paper, pipe cleaners, etc.) and label each part of the plant. Write a short
explanation of the function of the plant.
