Lesson 2
Biology – Animal Including Humans
Classifying animals
There are 2 groups of animals: animals with bones and animals
without bones.
Animals with bones are called vertebrates.
Animals without bones are called invertebrates.
There are 5 groups of vertebrates: Mammals, Reptiles, Fish,
Amphibian and Birds (MR FAB).
There are many groups of invertebrates: insects, crabs, snails,
spiders, worms, jellyfish, etc.
There are six different ways
we can classify animals...
Mammals
• They give birth to live young
• They have hair or fur.
• Mammal mothers feed their
children with their own milk.
• They are warm blooded.
Reptiles
• They have hard, dry scales.
• They lay eggs.
• They are cold blooded.
Birds
• They have feathers and
wings.
• They lay eggs.
• They are warm blooded.
Amphibians
• They can live on land and in water.
• They are cold blooded.
• They lay eggs.
• They have moist skin and webbed
feet.
Fish
• They have scales and fins.
• They breathe using gills.
• They lay eggs.
• They are cold blooded.
Invertebrates
• They have no backbone.
• They are cold blooded.
Naming Animals
Let’s match the animals to their names.
Starfish Poison Dart Frog Kangaroo
Lionfish Jellyfish Crocodile Ostrich
Sloth
Classifying Animals
Now let’s classify the animals using the labels below.

Complete the 2Do on Purple Mash: Classifying Animals.
Choose one of the animals below and draw a picture of it on
Purple Mash. Write a sentence to say which class of animal
it belongs to. Use ‘because’ to explain how you know.
Challenge: Design your own animal. What
class of animal is it? What features does it
have?
My animal is a reptile because it has dry scales. It also has cold
blood and it lays eggs.
