Abstract
This report presents the internship experience in polymer manufacturing with a focus on polyester
synthesis. Polyester, a widely used synthetic polymer, is formed through a condensation
polymerization reaction between a diacid and a diol. The report covers the chemical principles,
experimental setup, laboratory procedure, and industrial relevance of polyester production. It also
highlights key learning outcomes, including polymerization control, safety practices, and the
significance of polymers in modern industries.

Introduction
Polymers are large macromolecules formed by repeating structural units called monomers. They
play a crucial role in textiles, plastics, packaging, construction, and biomedical fields. This
internship provided exposure to polymer synthesis techniques, particularly the preparation of
polyesters in a controlled laboratory environment.

About Polyester
Polyester is a synthetic polymer obtained by the condensation reaction between a diacid
(terephthalic acid or phthalic acid) and a diol (ethylene glycol, glycerol, etc.). It is widely used in
fibers, textiles, PET bottles, films, coatings, and engineering plastics.

Laboratory Preparation of Polyester

Raw Materials:
- Phthalic Anhydride / Terephthalic Acid

ity
- Ethylene Glycol / Glycerol
- Catalyst: Sulfuric acid

Procedure:

rs
1. Add phthalic anhydride and ethylene glycol into a flask.
2. Add 2–3 drops of concentrated H2SO4 as catalyst.
ve
3. Heat at 160–180°C under reflux for 1–2 hours.
4. Water byproduct is collected in condenser.
5. Polyester resin is obtained as viscous solid.

Observations & Results

Pa

- Reaction mixture turned from liquid to viscous mass.

- Water droplets seen in condenser.
- Polyester obtained as transparent, brittle solid after cooling.

Applications of Polyester
- Textile fibers
- PET bottles
- Films and sheets
- Paints and coatings
- Electrical insulation

Internship Learning Outcomes

- Understood condensation polymerization
- Learned lab-scale handling of reactors
- Observed process parameters effect
- Gained safety awareness

Conclusion
The internship provided valuable exposure to polymer chemistry and the practical steps involved in
polyester synthesis. The lab-scale preparation reflected the industrial process on a smaller scale,
highlighting the significance of process parameters, catalyst choice, and safety measures. This
experience strengthened my knowledge of polymer technology and its wide applications.
