Grade-5J/5L Unit#1- Computer Networks (Revision Notes)

1.1 What is a Network?


 Computers are usually connected to make a computer network.
 In a public place a wireless connection is called a hotspot.
The advantages of networks.
 For Communicating: (send emails & messages)
 For Sharing: We use a network to share files and other N/W(Network) resources.
 For Saving work: We can save files onto network storage drives.
 For Working together: Networks help people to work together.

Types of Networks A WAP on ceiling


 A local area network (LAN) -joins computers in a single building.
 A wide area network (WAN) - joins computers that are far apart.
Types of Network Connections:
 Wired connection - It uses a cable to plug the computer into the
network.
 Wireless connection – It uses a WAP(Wireless Access Point) to provide a
wireless connection.
Network Login:
 To use a network, you must have a login. A login is made up of a username and a password.
 You must keep your password safe to protect your information and your work.
How to safeguard your online Login account?
 Never tell anyone your password.
 Change your password regularly.
 Choose a strong password.
Strong password: A strong password is difficult for another person to guess.
eg: Gingercats@home$1$3, Poofah@157_gh

1.2 Network Connections- types of Servers:


Servers: A server is a powerful computer. A network uses several servers. Each server does a different job.
1. Print server: When you print a picture or a document, a print server makes sure your file is printed
correctly.
2. File server: This server makes sure your documents are saved correctly.
3. Email server: This server makes sure your emails reach the right people.
1.3 Network Devices:
Switches, Hubs and Routers:
Switch : When you send a message, a switch decides which cable the data needs to travel down to reach the
right destination. Router
Hub: A hub is a type of switch which is not intelligent.
Router : A router connects a network to the internet.
Server Room: Network devices are usually stored in a locked room called a Server room.
Protocol: In a network, rules are called protocols.
