Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to:
1. Recognize earth constituents, natural earth materials, their physical - mechanical properties
2. Understand geological dynamic processes, tectonic structures, and influence on civil engineering
structure.
3. Understand geological, geophysical exploration and geospatial techniques for surface and
Sub-surface geological profile and usefulness in civil engineering projects

Earthquakes: Definitions, Basics of earthquake, Causes of earthquake, Earthquake
zones of India; Plate tectonics: Concepts and plate boundaries, Case studies (failure
of civil engineering structures)-protective measures.
Mass Movement: Definition, Classification, Causative internal and external factors,
protective measures; Case studies

Minerals: Definition, formation of minerals, physical properties of mineral, Study of
common rock forming minerals.
Rock cycle: Study of major types of rocks with reference to their formation,
identification, textural and structural features and as Construction materials

Outcrop, Primary and Secondary structures in rocks, stratification, dip and strike
relation.
Folds and Faults, types, classification, causative factors, identification in Field and
their Engineering implication. Joints and Unconformity in rocks, genesis and their
Engineering significance.
